    That's only about a mile more than the distance each way I cycled last Thursday evening to meet up with a couple of friends for a beer after work.
    …and it was raining.
    …and there was a full on march going down Oxford Street at 10.30pm.

    I used to commute from Littleborough, through Rochdale to Manchester Victoria on the train…if travelling at peak times I'd imagine that you might struggle to get a bike on at Rochdale, and back on at Victoria…it used to be standing room only at Rochdale (but heard they may have put an extra carriage on some trains).

    Getting across 'town' to Picadilly without a bike is a pain too…often quicker to walk than wait for the (probably overcrowded) picadilly tram; at a brisk pace it's still 15 minutes (to 20 minutes) walk.

    Look, if people can cycle across London to get to work you can ride the poncy 20 miles up North. Or get a pair of these:

    i'm looking at doing a 24 mile each way commute 3 x week

    it will be tough

    but then so will i – once i've been doing it for a month or so
