😯 ‘kin hell I was looking at a different bit, that should be jail time.

I thought rugby players had to watch what they eat nowadays?
    Too much fatty meat.

Bets on which is deemed worse? “In the old days” biting was seen as the lesser of those two evils

Love this from Flats (yeah yeah, no doubt he’s a **** and everyone hates him)

I think he’s proved to be an excellent pundit and writes a decent column too.

A far cry from the BBC trio of Jiffy, Gusset and Nicol who rarely say anything of any interest. Actually I do quite like Jiffy as a pundit but loathe him as a commentator.

Keith Wood is good though. Maybe they should have more front rowers on.

Do you lot ever actually talk about rugby?

Well the NZ teams have been lighting it up in Super Rugby. Good bit by BM in the Torygraph about the SH/NH gulf.

    Here’s a good example:

No, Fitz, Wood and Pitbull demonstrate that it should be restricted to the intellectual core alone – stick to hookers, the cream of the XV. Clear out the pretty boys – Guscott, Jiffy, Inverdale.

I come at this from a biased viewpoint but whenever I watch SH rugby the game management and speed/ quality of ball from 9 and 10 always jumps out for me. I know the forwards have already done the hard work by that stage but I can’t see the same happening here in the same circumstances. I think most of us could pick 3 9’s and 3 10’s to go on the Lions Tour but none offer anything special or creative in addition to doing the basics very well. Aaron Smith has been on fire this season whenever I’ve watched him and the quality of distribution is too good/ quick for my NH accustomed eyes to follow on TV let alone imagine playing against! Not just the big names doing it either but skills across the board. just a small part of many NH/ SH differences in approaching the game but something that sticks out for me

I watch SR and wonder whether they employ defensive coaches. It’s almost as if they are saving their energy for attacking.

In a number of those cases it looks like they have employed Alex Cuthbert as a specialist wing defence coach!

The difference is the speed at which the ball is recycled and or moved away from contact before the tackle. It gives the 9 and 10 much more time and gaps to run into. Webb and Davies would be devastating given that much space.

I remember going to the fund raising game Christchurch played at Twickenham after the earthquake. It was worth it for the donation and to see Carter but the score was 45-35 or something and it was actually really boring, my neighbour and I where close to leaving before the end.

@nameaste – that video makes my point 48-23. Is that more interesting than a tough 10-6 ? Not for me

The SH did all right keeping out the NH in the RWC while still putting some cricket scores in 😕

Think a_a makes a good point on the ball recycling. There’s a definite emphasis on keeping the ball alive and fighting to present quickly rather than trucking up and tussling for an extra 10mm towards the gain line before then maybe thinking about getting it to the feet of your 9.

On a lighter note, Drew Mitchell is a bit of a dude…. and now a multiple world record holder

True, they aren’t both one and the same and the way the games go is generally different as things get tighter the higher you go anywhere in the world, but in terms of the culture of rugby and approach to the game there is a lot of common ground (at least comparatively speaking to the NH and our leagues/ competitions). It is quite common to mock SR/ SH defenses on a highlights video but funnily enough the tries will have had to feature a missed tackle or bad judgement of an overlap, etc for the try to be scored in the first place. They don’t necessarily accurately portray the rest of the game.

    @DanW – JW who ? 😉 enjoyed that

DezB agreed but was just trying to make a point about the one game I saw live and the video posted. The extreme is basketball (a game I used fo play and have watched a lot on tv and live) where there is plenty of scoring but only the last 2-3 mins are really interesting

    JW who ?

😆 He was tired after about 5 kicks so it’s a wonder he got the record 😀

Whilst I hate to agree with anything you say Jambalaya – it’s a fair point. 😉 I’d probably find Bath beating Saracens 10-6 (unlikely, I know) more interesting than 2 teams I don’t care about racking up a basketball type score.

However I watch at least a couple of complete SR games per week and likewise with the AP and, as I know the SR teams quite well, I find the games generally more exciting than the AP.

The bigger picture is that the players, especially the Kiwis, have a different mindset and also the skills to back up their ambitions. Not all the games are 55-45 but even in tighter, low scoring affairs many opportunities for tries are taking with, frequently, a breathtaking display of skills.

A joke 2 week ban for Pocock,I’d have given him six months. The whole system is utterly ****!

Australian internal citing with an England tour imminent – what did you expect? It’s the same reason the Aus defence is so good close to the line – anything goes to save a try.

Exactly and this is why I was pissed off about the Marler thing. It deserved a small sanction and he may well get one now but the big picture of how bent the whole system is wont be addressed.

I always thought Pocock was better than that, continues to choke him after they have hit the ground.

No, not until I watched that vid. Saw the match on TV and didn’t notice that at the time. Nasty shit that was, someone as strong as him.

2 match ban and £20k fine for Marler.

Right, that’s over and done with now. Moving on….

2 match ban for Marler seems a bit harsh but will the blazers that let him iff everything the first time round be asked to explain themselves….of course they **** wont. Rugby disiplinary procedures need a a **** rocket up the collective arses. Had Marler been French or Gavin Henson he’d have got 6 months!!

oooft, £20,000 is a big hit if Marler is personally accountable for paying this

Maybe Marler just brought biscuits? Does he not know it’s Ferrero Rocher and two giant Toblerones for a World Rugby hearing?

So much for a minimum 4 week ban – what a crock.

at least the equality charity will benefit, even if no one else does.

how long did Gatts and Lee get for passing it off as excusable banter?

Not really a long enough ban, but the fine is substantial.

Had it been Henson they would have just banned him from spray tanning and hair gel, that would have hurt more than any time off rugby

Wonder what Marler earns? When Stevens was banned he was on 4k a week,Marler has lost international match fees for 6N I suspect.

Sutherland got £7k for keeping the bench warm in Italy. So £20k won’t be much for a starting prop.

I’m not over the moon with this signing, I wasn’t sad to hear that Morgan was off.
