I have an 11-36 on the back of my 29er at the moment, with a 34 on the front. This covers most XC duties, but I have an endurance event coming up, and the 29er hardtail is probably best suited to it. It could do with a new chain and cassette anyway, what options are there heading towards 11-40 now? (Ideally without changing the mech as well)

    Sunrace do a 10 speed cassette. 40T I think. Mech compatability ?

40t rear expander, drop the cog out and see how the mech goes, if it’s tight then the one up rad cage is the other part needed.

That mech should be fine*, as said options are either an expander and optional 16t or a complete cassette from someone like Sunrace.

As you’re needing a cassette anyway I’d go for the latter option, I think Sunrace do 2 versions (cheaper/heavier and more expensive/lighter) and unto a 42t.

*I run a 42 on medium cage XT without any trouble though can sometimes depend on frame design

Righto, cheers all! My LBS has provided an 11-42 Sunrace and new chain, I’m just hoping now the derailleur will be OK!

Sorted, works perfectly (though there is no more room on the b-screw, lol) Thanks all!

It really is. I was surprised just how nice it looked for the money when I got one.
