Only console game I've ever been any good at was PGA Tour 2 on the Sega Mega Drive (I'd beat the lot of you at that game, especially at Sawgrass) so I'm not exactly up to speed with the computer game world.

Tyred Jrs (aged 12 and 9) have an XBox 360 and have complained for a while now that they can't play games online with their mates so they want an Xbox 1. Playstations are for losers and weirdos it seems.

Father Christmas may oblige this year, but I see there's a new Xbox coming out shortly. It's about 450 quid from what I can see, so they're not getting that! Would I be right in assuming that, come the release of this 450 quid one, the current one will likely reduce in price or appear frequently for 2nd hand sale?

Either way, what I really need to know is whether or not this new console will make the current Xbox 1 obsolete - ie if they get an Xbox 1 and a load of their mates get the new one, will they be in the same position as now, or will the playing online together stuff all work OK even if they don't have the new one?

Do XBox 360 games work on Xbox 1?

I tried to read up on this but got bored by 6TFLOPS, whatever they are.

Also, can you use these things for other things, say easily using Spotify and connecting to regular speakers?

A Luddite thanks you.

The new Xbox X will not make the Xbox One S obsolete. It's meant as a machine for early adopters, enthusiast and those looking for a reason to justify their 4k TV.

The Xbox X will be backward compatible, like the Xbox One S is. You can play most 360 games on the One.

Here's a list of Xbox 360 games you can play on Xbox One:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/backward-compatibility

...and here is some more info on the backward compatibly of the Xbox One S:

https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/games/game-setup/play-xbox-360-games-on-xbox-one

You kids will be able to play online with friends who have an Xbox X.

Prices will drop, and have started to. Currently you can get a 500GB Xbox One S with a game or two for around the £200 mark. Second hand you should able to get a 1TB unit for £170-ish.

The Xbox One S comes in 500GB and 1TB versions. Get the 1TB, but you can add an external harddrive. Also, get them 2 of these to save on batteries.

Terminology:

Xbox X - New console coming in November
Xbox One - Original iteration of the One
Xbox One S - Latest version of the One. Runs quieter, uses less power etc.

After an initial panic - found this on tech radar

One interesting revelation from Microsoft's E3 announcement is that all consoles in the Xbox One family, including One X and the One S, will be able to play from the same library of games.

Xbox One X will also apparently support a select number of Xbox 360 games just like the Xbox One as well as original Xbox games as well.

However, more powerful consoles like Xbox One X will feature better gaming experiences due to the more powerful components.

I wouldn't get an xbox one x at this point - stick to vanilla

Cheers Jamie, exactly what I was after!

(Mrs Tyred actually said last night "why don't you ask on the mountain bike site". And lo, wisdom came forth)

I've just bought an Xbox One S, so all stuff I looked into myself very recently.

I only bought it to play Forza 3 and Ori, then going to sell it.

I actually bought an XBox One last night.. Basically as above really re the new XBox X - Good justification for your fancy telly if you have one... I've got a 10+ year old Panasonic plasma so it wasn't for me. I'm not worried at all about my new toy becoming obsolete in November.

GAME are doing the 1TB S with 7 games for £290. I traded back a couple of the titles I was less interested in immediately and stuck an extra £20 to get the new F1 game. I was pretty happy with the deal and ended up with the following games:

Destiny 2
Forza 3 Horizon
F1 2017
Fallout 4
Doom
Dishonoured 2

Not exactly cheap but that lot ^^^ should keep be me busy for a little while!

The One X is for 4K games. If you haven't got a 4K TV it's pointless.

Get the One / One S with the biggest HDD you can. Game installs can run to 50Gb. I've a 1TB drive and it's 98% full.

get them 2 of these to save on batteries.

I've not had great experiences with Play & Charge kits. You're better off with half a dozen Eneloop batteries and a decent charger IMHO.

The 360 controllers and headsets aren't compatible with the One, so you'll need to buy a second controller and a headset or two depending what's bundled. There are many third-party controllers but I'd stick with the official MS ones.

When I bought mine, ShopTo were doing them on 12 months interest free credit.

Your existing XBL Gold subscription will cover both 360 and One, and unlike the One you only need one sub per console rather than per person. Cheapest place to get them is Electronic First or CDkeys - don't buy them through the Xbox, that's the dearest way of doing it. As well as online play, Gold gives you two free 360 titles and two free One titles every month.

It might be logging into the MS account on a PC to see if you can claim the One games - I don't know if this is possible, but if it is then you'll have a handful of free games to get you started come Christmas.

Backwards compatibility has a selection of games, more are being added monthly. Not really an issue if you're keeping the 360, mind.

There's a Spotify app available IIRC, yes.

Forza Horizon 3 is tremendous.

I believe this is the cheapest Xbox One S right now, if you are not bothered about bundled games. I have the 500GB version, but I only have 3 games installed so it is plenty big for me, if you have kids and they play half a dozen games each then 1TB might be the way to go.

Oh, point of note, if budget is a concern you can add more storage later in the shape of a USB hard disk.

I'd disagree. It will still have better frame rates, and better graphics.

Oh good, I'll start adding the 360 games junior wants to play. But as I have the 500mb version, which hard drive for Xbox?

Watching this thread with interest.

One thing I do seem to remember from last year was bunch of people saying you must set up the new xbox before Chrimbo as the downloads can be huge and everyone does them at the same time.

Yup. Plug that sucker in early.

For example, I got the Forza Horizon 3 edition, so digital version of Forza, and that was a download of 55GB. Then Gears Of War 4, which was on a disc, had a further 15GB of updates. Then dashboard updates was 3GB or so.

Or don't connect it to the network until bedtime?

Haha - I went through the painful update process last night.. The flipping controller of all things needed an update! That was after the console main one and then the F1 50GB one.. Was sat for quite some time before I could even get a single lap of Silverstone in! (Spa was still downloading..)

I meant, on Christmas Day don't network it when you're installing games. No network = no game updates. Run the updates overnight afterwards.

I was another pre-Xmas downloader, it was lifesaver even with a 300Mbps connection it took ages because the Xbox servers couldn't keep up, we were getting 5Mbps at some points, took a day or so to update the system and Forza, Mknecraft and another one I forget.

Not to mention on first use the system will want to download 50GB ish from the disk to the HDD to play.

Buy new xbox so that children can play with friends who all have the latest console... but buy the older version as it's cheaper.....

Seems a bit short sighted.

Spending twice as much on a feature you'll probably never use is more short sighted.
You can play most 360 games on the One.

"most" doesn't include any of the 360 games we have (kids slightly younger than the OP's). Maybe we should sell on the 360 and its games whilst it still has some value, but at the moment it's still sitting there and occasionally gets used to play its collection of games.
I've not had great experiences with Play & Charge kits. You're better off with half a dozen Eneloop batteries and a decent charger IMHO.

For you that's probably true. We have http://www.argos.co.uk/product/3467097 - though picked it up on sale for £10, it might be cheaper if you shop around. It works fine and we always have controllers which work (though only 8 months of use so far). I have rechargeable AAs but it was always be a hassle changing the batteries and getting them charged (my hassle, otherwise we'd end up with a load of uncharged batteries). The kids manage to put the controllers on the charging dock themselves.

Maybe - bought ours at Currys which was cheaper than either of those as they had it on sale.

Good point, I hadn't considered that.

Sorry, should've said "the cheapest place I've found" really.

The point though is that the older version will still be compatible with the new one (if I've understood the discussion correctly - I'm far from an expert), so they won't have the problem of not being able to play online in future. Nothing shortsighted at all about it if you don't need the features on the newer one, and most people don't - it won't make a significant difference to the gameplay.

The irony here though is that we mainly upgraded from a 360 to a One S because his mates were supposedly also getting them, so that he could play online - one mate didn't get one, I don't think he's ever played online with the other.

You realise, all three kids have conspired together and said the same thing to their parents so that they could get the new shiny?

You've been outsmarted by an eight year old. (-:

If you were to buy the normal xbox one they could still play online with the 450 quid xbox as the 450 quid one is just faster and has more storage.

Yeah, this. Been there the generation before. Backwards compatibility isn't the issue, it's when all their mates are playing the new games that need the latest one.

My lad was adamant he wanted a 360, and got one, about 20 minutes before all his mates got a One. Before too long, they are all playing games that he can't...

It's apples and orange though.

The 360 to the One are different consoles.

The One / One S / One X are fundamentally the same console.

On the pre Xmas doing the downloads thing ... the package we bought last year (thanks again all the advisers on here) did not have physical game disks for at least one of the bundled items and we had to download it with a code from the MS store. This took bloody ages.

Also allow a good 2 or 3 evenings to get it done as the machine itself will want to update and then each game.

I pulled three late nights on the sofa getting all the updates done and then hiding it away at 5am!!

There are monthly OS updates for XBox one and it seems every game updates at least as often. So definitely (a) set up and run all updates before Christmas, and (b) I leave XBox in quick start mode when it's switched off rather than full energy saving shutdown. All updates happen automatically overnight.

Basically the same as I recommended above, but without the charging cradle - the cradle is well worth having for convenience IMHO (without it you might as well go with Cougar's suggestion of rechargeable AAs).

I should probably clarify:

I had two play & charge kits for the 360. The first was a genuine MS one which died after a couple of years, the second was a third-party one which was temperamental from the outset and died after a few months. I've had no experience of the kits for the One.

I replaced them with AAs and never looked back. An 8-pack means I can power two controllers and have two pairs ready to go, and the beauty of the Eneloops is that they don't discharge over time so they're always fully charged when you change them over (so long as you remember to put the old ones on charge when you take them out!)

For me personally, I found "low battery, better swap them" to be far more convenient than "low battery, better spend the next two hours tethered to the console," but Aracer's docking cradle would get around those issues. It's probably a better solution in the OP's case, assuming reliability isn't an issue then for £15 that's hard to beat.

Plus it has the added advantage of encouraging the kids to put them away tidily after playing, rather than having the first game of a session always being Hunt the Controller.

My kids are incompatible with rechargeable batteries. With the charger cable it's their responsibility to plug in end-of whereas rechargeable batteries (and the absence of them) are mine. I prefer delegation any day.

Same here, though as mentioned above the cradle works far better than a cable (they have devices which need plugging in which always end up with flat batteries and then the charging cables get broken when they use them whilst plugged in to charge).

I actually have lots of rechargeable AAs, but they end up getting knackered in things which are left on, running them completely flat - that at least isn't an issue with Xbox controllers though as they switch themselves off.

Our two manage to get the rechargeable batteries into the charger (or at least the older one does). They know there is no Xbox if they're not charged and once caught out a few times they seemed to work it out!

😈
