You post on here and upset someone with your words then you have upset them for real! They aint pretending!

Anyone that gets "upset" by an internet forum needs to take a long hard look at themself.

There are loads of people on here with permarage that take it all far too seriously.

Wrong!
It IS real life.
You post on here and upset someone with your words then you have upset them for real! They aint pretending!
You insult someone on here you insult them for real.
You offer an opinion on here people will correctly assume that is your actual, real life opinion.
You act a arse on here I will consider you to be an arse because all evidence will point to you actually being an arse!

Just because you communicate via a forum does not mean you can distance yourself from what you say or ignore the fact that what you say has a real effect on the person at the reading end.

For me, if you are an arse on this forum then you will have your work cut out to convince me you are anything but an arse in the real world. I despise people with 'online personas'. Your actual persona not good enough? I have one persona. You insult it online and it's also insulted in meat space, so if we ever meet I will remain insulted until you apologise whether you have one or a whole collection of 'personas' online.

You are presupposing that I, or indeed anyone on here, is exactly like their online persona.

Now most people are probbly quite like their persona on here. And then there are those who create a myth, and illusion, of who they really are, to protect themseves, possibly, or simply to appear in a certain way. Take CFH, for example; is he really the upper-class toff that he would have us believe? Or is there actually a 'real' CFH, with a 'real' name, life, personality, etc?

I can't tell that, simply from just reading what a person posts. I can't tell if they are actually being genuine, or if they are just winding someone up.

See, STW can be seen as a kind of 'stage', where individuals can act out who they want to be, as opposed to who they actually are. Many probbly woon't do this to any great degree, whilst others might create a persona specifically designed to wind people up, or as a way of attacking someone else's character, as 'Avocado' seems to be.

Take WCA; he sits there bored, sometimes, and thinks up hypothetical situations/questions, then forms an elaborate 'trolling' post around that. And usually gets many 'biters'. I get taken in by it quite often!

But is that the 'real' WCA? No. I know him personally, and can categorically say that he is actually [s]far worse[/s] a lovely bloke, who wouldn't dream of being deliberately nasty to anyone.

And then you've got yer Hora, SFB and Smee, who seem to revel in the fuss they create.

But actual testimonies about these 'characters' reveals they are actually pretty decent people. And I think there are only a very few people who deliberately set out to upset people. There have been one or two nasty characters, that have deserved being slagged off on here; fortunately, they usually bugger off or get themselves banned. I'm talking about people who make bigoted, prejudicial and insensitive comments on a regular basis. Not someone who may play Devil's Advocate, or be deliberately obtuse.

So, you might think someone's an 'arse' based on what they post, but my point is, that you are only seeing what they want you to see, whereas in 'real' life, you will see them much more, as they truly are.

Anyone who sees me as a gobby, obnoxious, contrary and cantankerous little bastard is...

...probbly right, actually.

But I might buy you a pint, in real life. And you never know, you might actually end up thinking 'You know what? He's not such a bad little bastard after all'.

I agree.

And at this point, would like to say, if any folk are genuinely upset by what I post, then I'm truly sorry. It's never my intention to be nasty to anyone. And I think I enjoy an overall positive relationship with all the folk off here that I've had the pleasure of meeting.

I wear my heart on my sleeve. In life and on t'internet. Most people I've met biking I get on with really well. Those who dont like me are put off (I think) by my incessant swearing and general uncouthness and slight lack of internal monologue/shame. That's just me.

I love to ride with people better than me so I can learn as much as possible from them and I have all the time in the world to coach those who want to learn from me. And yes people have told me they were glad to have me around when situations might have gotten a little hairy.

People aren't just one-dimensional, as they may appear on here.
However, some certainly are.

I think it's a big mistake to assume you can determine someone's personality through a one dimensional medium like this.

I despise people with 'online personas'

It's not as simple as that, the channel does inform a reaction and evoke possibly only part of the personality, because a stream of isolated words is NOT the same as a real life interaction, and there is far more scope for misunderstanding (and lack of tact). Moreover:

You post on here and upset someone with your words then you have upset them for real!

it's often hard to predict what will or won't upset some unknown person

They aint pretending!

and what of irony? Even IRL, people often don't say what they mean or mean what they say!

Easily done, SFB...

To say you'd not want to meet someone just based on who they are on here, is a bit narrow-minded, imo. As is assuming you know them just from here.

Mark - Administrator

It's a PERSONA. Not real life. Work it out.

Couldn't agree more. Which is also pretty much the reason I stopped using STW forum more than 2 years ago in the first place. Full over overly opinionated arses (though a lot of them seem to have moved on) with nothing much to say other than "I'm right, you're wrong". I only came back onto STW cos I was so bored sat at home after being made redundant and I was trying to get out riding some more. I'm kind of glad I did too, cos since then I've met a quite a few really cool people that I wouldn't have met otherwise, though I have no inclination to meet (or at least go out of my way to meet) many of the overly self indulgent childish "persona's" off this forum. No names, most of them know who they are, but I really don't get it.

In defence of RudeBoy, having met him (albeit only for a short while), he's actually an alright guy. Certainly no quieter in person than he is on here, but I don't mind that, at least he's got something to say for himself. I think a lot of what he says gets taken too literally, and he doesn't always see how he might be offending other people. Or he doesn't see that the fact that 20% of the posts on this forum are made by him alone (ie. he has ALWAYS got something to say, no matter what the subject), and that infuriates people too. But in fairness, I don't think he's hiding behind a persona though. We all piss people off at times, and more often than not we don't realise we've done it. Inevitably, those with more to say about things are going to piss more people off than those that keep schtum all the time! Fact of life really.

All the above said, if I happened to meet any of the known "trolls" or just those that like the sound of their own voice too much, it wouldn't make me behave any differently. Just as Mark says, they'd have a LOT of convincing to do to make me think they were anything other than an arse!

Don't worry Aleigh, he's a nasty and horrible man. I'll look after you.

(Gives Aleigh a nice cuddle)

Personally, I woon't not meet someone off here, based solely on their online persona. If someone was organising/proposing a ride, and they were someone I'd 'locked horns with', that woon't put me off at all, as I woon't judge them until I'd got to know them. And meeting up would be a good way to get to know them better, surely.

There was a feller recently, pulled out of going on a ride, and has disappeared off here, because SFB was going to be on the ride. I don't know the full ins and outs of the case, but it did seem a little silly. Especially if the bloke haddunt even met SFB. Denying yourself having fun, just because someone you may have disagreed with on an internet forum is pathetic. **** it, go on the ride, enjoy yerself. If someone wants to carry things on from a silly forum, that's childish and ridiculous.

I've probbly met a few STWers who might think 'who the **** does he think he is?' before they've met me, and possibly after. I don't really care. Those who I get on with, I'll keep meeting up with and having fun.

As for someone needing to 'convince me that they aren't an arse in real life', well, I just see it as they may be an 'arse' on here, but always give someone the benefit of the doubt until you've actually got to know them a bit.

This is JUST a forum. It is not the be all and end all in life.

I'm sure there are people on here who I wouldn't get on with in real life. Not sure who they are yet, because I haven't met them...

A big part of the problem is that this is a community, one in which people start to feel comfortable after a while. A bit like you might feel amongst good friends. I wouldn't hesitate to call one of my mates something crass ( and take the retaliatory pinch 😉 ). Sometimes I have to remind myself that it doesn't work that way here and some people struggle to differentiate between pisstaking and genuine insults.

Worries about SFB's intimate knowledge about mens arses and tries to prevent imagery appearing in minds eye
Back to the topic ish
what about evil Zone, the personas on there and the Hacker is their on line persona also nothing like their real world persona? Just because the person hacks charities destroys a businesses databases is this OK because in the real world they do not break into offices and trash the place or steal the charity collection box form the local chippy?
What about the online persona of a paedophile or a Groomer --certainly would be laughed out of court as a defence- is that OK if they dont do it in the real world?

PS SFB may or may not be like his persona he was to far in front of me to tell sadly 🙁

If someone is an asshat, and annoys people on the bus, because they are an asshat, then they are an asshat.

If someone pretends to be an asshat on the bus, because it amuses them to annoy other people on the bus by acting like an asshat then they are an asshat.

As buses, trains and the internet are the only times I am in close proximity to a lot fo people I do not know who annoy me I assume that the rules that apply on the bus also apply on the internet. Although admittedly there is less porn on the bus.) 🙂

To get mildly back on topic, I've met loads of folks from here and they've all been smashing. Most, if not all, similar to their online 'personas' but generally that's no bad thing.

There's no one from here I'd actively avoid meeting. Take me and RudePaddedFredDibnah, we've had our disagreements over the last few days but I'd happily meet him for a pint. It's easier to tell someone they're wrong face-to-face 😉

From the slang expression having one's head up one's ass, thus, wearing the ass as a hat. The term is extended to people who are clueless or bumbling, who don't understand what is going on.

Mark.

EXACTLY!

If you are the sort of person who can't be themselves here then don't you think that's dishonest? And downright nasty if you just want to antagonize folk. If you are typing it here you'll certainly be thinking it when we meet and speak for real. So Jo thanks, I'll take a raincheck on that meeting unless you be who you are on here.

Just in case no one else has pointed it out Robdob, it wasn't me who said the stuff about personnas it was Rudeboy. I'm pretty much exactly who I am on here. Most people who have met me say that I am.
