It's meant to be a friendly forum.
I agree.
And at this point, would like to say, if any folk are genuinely upset by what I post, then I'm truly sorry. It's never my intention to be nasty to anyone. And I think I enjoy an overall positive relationship with all the folk off here that I've had the pleasure of meeting.
I wear my heart on my sleeve. In life and on t'internet. Most people I've met biking I get on with really well. Those who dont like me are put off (I think) by my incessant swearing and general uncouthness and slight lack of internal monologue/shame. That's just me.
I love to ride with people better than me so I can learn as much as possible from them and I have all the time in the world to coach those who want to learn from me. And yes people have told me they were glad to have me around when situations might have gotten a little hairy.

KINGTUT:
There are enough 'Try too hards' on here already.
Amen brother.
i hear stevethebarbarian is a right wizards sleeve....
Mark - is that why you won't reply to my emails about the Big Bike Bash and stuff?
People aren't just one-dimensional, as they may appear on here.
However, some certainly are.
I think it's a big mistake to assume you can determine someone's personality through a one dimensional medium like this.
I despise people with 'online personas'
It's not as simple as that, the channel does inform a reaction and evoke possibly only part of the personality, because a stream of isolated words is NOT the same as a real life interaction, and there is far more scope for misunderstanding (and lack of tact). Moreover:
You post on here and upset someone with your words then you have upset them for real!
it's often hard to predict what will or won't upset some unknown person
They aint pretending!
and what of irony? Even IRL, people often don't say what they mean or mean what they say!
MTT, cos he's the man.
oh and SFB, he makes my skin crawl. ๐
hands up who hasn't been taking the internet seriously enough
<puts up hand>
Un Dread.
And then you've got yer Hora, SFB and Smee, who seem to revel in the fuss they create.
it's more like dropping a pebble into an empty swimming pool and watching the endless intersecting ripples ๐
oh and SFB, he makes my skin crawl
No, YOU do that to yourself!
it's more like dropping a pebble into an empty swimming pool and watching the endless intersecting ripples
What an incredibly beautiful and eloquent way of putting it.
I have met a few from here, and all have been really sound. There are no posters I wouldn't want to share a pint with.

FYI you'd have to tie me down and administer it through a funnel :o) Ugh, beer, <<<shiver>>>
Easily done, SFB...
To say you'd not want to meet someone just based on who they are on here, is a bit narrow-minded, imo. As is assuming you know them just from here.

Very true. That's one reason why I go out of my way to meet other STWers.
Even SFB is a lot friendlier than he sometimes comes over as!
๐
And more of a nutter, in a good way

I like cake. So sue me!

No, Poddy does like his cake...

I don't think anyone who has seen him could doubt it :o)

If that's a requirement, then I'd like to make SFB my person that I'd not like to meet.
If that's a requirement
It's only a requirement if you insist on me taking beer
I don't think anyone who has seen him could doubt it :o)
Ere, what is this? Slag off Poddy half-hour?
I'm in a huff now.
๐
We can make it an hour, if you prefer...
I could poke you in the nose, if you like!
I'm in a huff now.
just let Mark know and he can ban me again! I got done last week for an almost innocent comment about Julia Bradbury's chest ๐
reading this thread, it seems i really must try harder!
perhaps people have forgotten who you are?
I must defend RudeBoy. He talks as much in real life as he writes on here BUT he doesn't have a bad bone in his body. IMO that's a pretty good quality ๐
I was thinking about grassing you up, Simon, but I remembered I had spare flapjack in the car and I feel a lot better now, so you're safe.
๐
I'm off to your neck of the woods this weekend (well I'm seeting off in about 10 mins, actually!), so if I see you I'll wave as I pass, assisted by my immense cake-fuelled downhilling velocity....

I'm off to your neck of the woods this weekend
I'm leading a ride round Claife and Grizedale (what AGAIN?) this Sunday...
Whinlatter tomorrow, Helvellyn Saturday, and an as yet undecided route from Ambleside on Sunday.

I'm OUTTAHERE!

Helvellyn Saturday
for what it's worth, the weather is glorious right now ๐
Maybe instead of a separate forum for women, we could have separate forums for people who want to be mean and nasty, and those who want to spread some peace and love. I'm gonna hang with the hippies, man 8)
Mark - AdministratorIt's a PERSONA. Not real life. Work it out.
Wrong!
It IS real life.
You post on here and upset someone with your words then you have upset them for real! They aint pretending!
You insult someone on here you insult them for real.
You offer an opinion on here people will correctly assume that is your actual, real life opinion.
You act a arse on here I will consider you to be an arse because all evidence will point to you actually being an arse!
Couldn't agree more. Which is also pretty much the reason I stopped using STW forum more than 2 years ago in the first place. Full over overly opinionated arses (though a lot of them seem to have moved on) with nothing much to say other than "I'm right, you're wrong". I only came back onto STW cos I was so bored sat at home after being made redundant and I was trying to get out riding some more. I'm kind of glad I did too, cos since then I've met a quite a few really cool people that I wouldn't have met otherwise, though I have no inclination to meet (or at least go out of my way to meet) many of the overly self indulgent childish "persona's" off this forum. No names, most of them know who they are, but I really don't get it.
In defence of RudeBoy, having met him (albeit only for a short while), he's actually an alright guy. Certainly no quieter in person than he is on here, but I don't mind that, at least he's got something to say for himself. I think a lot of what he says gets taken too literally, and he doesn't always see how he might be offending other people. Or he doesn't see that the fact that 20% of the posts on this forum are made by him alone (ie. he has ALWAYS got something to say, no matter what the subject), and that infuriates people too. But in fairness, I don't think he's hiding behind a persona though. We all piss people off at times, and more often than not we don't realise we've done it. Inevitably, those with more to say about things are going to piss more people off than those that keep schtum all the time! Fact of life really.
All the above said, if I happened to meet any of the known "trolls" or just those that like the sound of their own voice too much, it wouldn't make me behave any differently. Just as Mark says, they'd have a LOT of convincing to do to make me think they were anything other than an arse!

You and me both! Where the pace of life is nice and slow, and I've got plenty of time to take some pictures ๐
Didn't get that job BTW anna. Bummer, but they've taken someone on more experienced. Hey ho! ๐
You and me both! Where the pace of life is nice and slow
I'd like to see you try and be like that ๐ ๐
Awwww, sorry to hear that m, was wondering if you'd heard. Don't give up, you will find the right job.

LOL
I'm close to horizontal I'm that laid back!
Oh by the way, public service announcement... For those who have not met Aleigh, she's terrible. Would reccomend staying away from her at all costs. Absolute nightmare! Most horrid person in the world ever. You have been warned!
๐
Sorry, you asked for it ๐
And everyone that does know me knows you're talking out of your backside ๐
aleigh is a vision of loveliness :o)
[warning: internet grooming alert]
Don't worry Aleigh, he's a nasty and horrible man. I'll look after you.
(Gives Aleigh a nice cuddle)
Personally, I woon't not meet someone off here, based solely on their online persona. If someone was organising/proposing a ride, and they were someone I'd 'locked horns with', that woon't put me off at all, as I woon't judge them until I'd got to know them. And meeting up would be a good way to get to know them better, surely.
There was a feller recently, pulled out of going on a ride, and has disappeared off here, because SFB was going to be on the ride. I don't know the full ins and outs of the case, but it did seem a little silly. Especially if the bloke haddunt even met SFB. Denying yourself having fun, just because someone you may have disagreed with on an internet forum is pathetic. **** it, go on the ride, enjoy yerself. If someone wants to carry things on from a silly forum, that's childish and ridiculous.
I've probbly met a few STWers who might think 'who the **** does he think he is?' before they've met me, and possibly after. I don't really care. Those who I get on with, I'll keep meeting up with and having fun.
As for someone needing to 'convince me that they aren't an arse in real life', well, I just see it as they may be an 'arse' on here, but always give someone the benefit of the doubt until you've actually got to know them a bit.
This is JUST a forum. It is not the be all and end all in life.
Especially if the bloke haddunt even met SFB.
he claimed he had met me, and it's quite possible as we get loads of people who just do one or 2 rides and then vanish (perhaps driven away by toxic Barnes). I did offer to back out but that didn't satisfy him either ๐
I met Glupton in a zoo once
