I celebrated 'Freedom Day' this morning by crossing over the road to avoid passing close to an elderly lady. We smiled at each other across the street.
Wee Nicky sez wir no allowed Freedom Day, sed it's daft.

Your gonna love the pictures of the clubbers.
Gonna be an interesting month for the U.K. I think.
Freedom days a bit premature.
Two things that gave me a wry smile this weekend.
Someone pointing out that lifting restrictions doesn't mean it's any safer, just that they've got more room in the hospitals.
Every disaster movie ever, starts with government ignoring scientists.
^^ I like that 🙂
Was thinking we'd not had a batfink down under update for a while - glad you are still safe, but really shows how this isn't over until the world is properly protected.
The failure of governments to learn from each other is crazy. Even if one gets one thing right, their inability to join the dots to other actions needed is crazy.
And you can keep Katie Hopkins. Please.

If they must send her back, Diego Garcia or the Pitcairns are the closest territories.
Free to spread Delta love thanks to Boris The Butcher... But will they have more common sense than him? I fear a sizeable number will not.
Just drop her off in international waters, would be my suggestion.
GBnews is the sewer where that particular turd will end up at.

Does spreading Coronavirus at high levels, resulting in higher admissions, result in more or fewer people being treated for non-Covid conditions?
I feel a bit less stupid now, as regards not getting at first that your vaccine information is accessible by an entirely different app to the "NHS COVID19" app a while ago. The "Vaccines Minister" (Zahawi) is on the Radio and clearly still has no clue that there are two different separate apps involved when talking about contact tracing and proof of vaccination. Led by donkeys.
Sky reporting that NHS staff are going to be effectively put on "that pilot scheme" instead of isolating due to being a close contact.
Less than nine hours into "Freedom Day" and already that screams there is an NHS staffing crisis brewing, due to just how Delta is surging, while The Butcher drops all restrictions. God help us all, especially those using common sense.
Will hospitals accept that though? They have a responsibility to their vulnerable patients to keep the virus out. Will the backlog of work increase or decrease if contacts of positive cases bring the virus onto wards?
There's a special More Or Less on Radio4 this morning... bound to be worth a listen...

More or Less : The Freedom Day Gamble
On the day the Government plans to drop the remaining Covid-19 restirictions, Tim Harford and the team try to work out if the link with deaths and hospitalisations has been broken.
That is scary from Dr Puthucheary, but what he doesn't mention is how many. He says the age is different but not the volumes.
Devil's advocate - was he ventilating 20 a day that were similar age to him and now 1 a day that is his kids age? And kids do also have underlying health issues. It's a headline grabber but fact-light.
Devils devils advocate - I made a prediction 15 pages ago based on case rates x SPV's 'doubling every 7-10 days' of approaching 100K cases per day shortly after reopening, and potentially 200K cases per day by end of the month. Prof Ferguson is saying longer, but we could be peaking in August through to mid Sept; even if the doubling doesn't continue at that point it's 2-3000 admissions per day that follow on from that level of cases. Even at a small rate of susceptibility that's a lot of kids at risk, but that's the freedom of choice that has been handed to us.

Data not dates, indeed.
And kids do also have underlying health issues.
Absolutely they do. What is being done for them?
What is being done for them?
Nothing. Kids don't vote Tory.
After a weekend heatwave, there are going to be a lot of people this morning with warm chests and backs, and a headache.
Is this
A) going to hide peoples COVID symptoms as they dismiss it as sunburn and dehydration…
B) drive more people to get tested and pick up more cases?
Can we started a petition? #keepkatieout. Let's all the government to try all means possible to take her UK citizenship away.
When there was talk of reducing the sensitivity of the Covid App today, to reduce the number of individuals being “pinged,” I turned off updates.
But is this in vain as regards trying to stop my app reducing its sensitivity, by way of the update that has been available since around last Thursday?
Are the distancing calculations being done on my mobile, or are the Bluetooth strengths to other app users being sent to “Big Brother” and a super computer is working out who gets pinged?
B) drive more people to get tested and pick up more cases?
Its freedom day! Pandemic stopped at 11:59 last night, why would u bother getting tested

Exactly. Particularly not if a positive test means you should stay at home and lose out financially if you are self employed.
Testing is for pussies, isolation is for bedwetters. It is Freedom Day.
Through our position as Number One Country in the entire universe we have Got Covid Done.
Lockdown late Aug/Sep at the latest. 'Government' starts 'being led by the science' again when unpopular decisions are forced on them.
Will England’s case rate follow Scotland’s after schools are out? That would fall for a while (making boris look clever) then really get us in september/ October when we are all convinced it will be fine. Or will night clubs undo it all like in the netherlands.
When there was talk of reducing the sensitivity of the Covid App today, to reduce the number of individuals being “pinged,” I turned off updates.
I was sitting next to the company owner of the firm that created/manages the app on Saturday. Sensitivity has not been reduced and at one point last week there were more downloads than there were vaccinations per day.
just dropped the car off at the garage (wore a mask as did the other customers). walked back through town and not much has changed. most people wearing masks into shops etc.
The Butcher
I don't disagree with you, but I got pulled up several hundred pages ago by referring to our glorious leader in similar terms.

'The Butcher' is far more polite than anything I can muster.
The only reason I can think of for anyone having a problem with 'The Butcher' is, if in fact, they are an actual butcher. I can understand why any association with that useless, freewheeling, lying sack of excrement would cause offence.

This is exactly what I keep warning of. It it is only once the schools and colleges have been back a few weeks that we will learn of the real damage of this. Falling case numbers in August will have people (who don't work in the NHS) thinking things are going well for a while.
Another messed up academic year could be avoided, if we choose to keep low economic impact restrictions in place over the summer, and cracked on with vaccinating teens.
Its worth learning in mind also that while the schools are out, there's a large number of tests not being taken, so there could very well be a "false dawn" in falling case numbers.

This is true but it looks like we're now seeing the delayed drop in Hospitalisation rates up in Scotland too.
Lockdown by 30th September is my prediction.
Even Bellend Boris will be forced to u turn by the numbers. Of course he will 'following the science' again by then...
🙄
Which is very good news. Hopefully you won't get another uptick up there after the UK gov's confusing messaging of recent weeks. Fingers crossed for next term.
whats the deal with this? Covid Symptom Study by ZOE

Needs to be normalised against what proportion of people are unvaccinated at any given time.
@iffoverload - how many folk in the UK are yet to receive their first vaccination?
Vaccination is not 100% effective at stopping infections, it is more effective at preventing the infection being serious. And as the proportion of people vaccinated goes up, the proportion of cases of vaccinated people/unvaxed people goes up. If we had 100% vaccination all cases would be in the vaxed population.
As said several times previously, virtually all car crash deaths were wearing seatbelts, outnumbering those that weren't by N:1. Should we conclude seatbelts are the issue?
Lockdown fire brake Covid Cushion shock absorber by 30th September is my prediction.
thanks, makes sense that numbers rise as % of population vaccinated increases.
still does it not make a poor case for vaccine passports etc?
Interested to hear from our many knowledgeable members - now that Pfizer and Moderna have shown the efficacy of mRNA vaccines, will it be easier for other companies to use similar technology to make vaccines that address current and future variants?
Yep there's a big push for mRNA vaccine development right now
https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/news/sanofi-invest-mrna-vaccines/
The tech has managed to skip years of clinical trials (we're all in a clinical trial right now, normally they cost pharma $$$$ and have massive ethical & regulatort hoops to jump through, everything has been fast forwarded for covid)
whats the deal with this?
Half the population have now been double vaccinated, far more single vaccinated, with priority given to those most likely to be made ill. Vaccination is VITAL, but is not the silver bullet that the government are treating it as... especially while unfinished. The vaccination programme has has gone exceptional well, but the fact that the government answers ALL questions about the ongoing pandemic with "but vaccines" has led to this idea that nothing else matters... and it simply is not true, at least not yet.
still does it not make a poor case for vaccine passports etc?
Depends what you want the vaccine passport to do?
Is it to provide some evidence that the bearer is less likely to fall ill as a result of any infection they may pick up? eg: you can come into my bar / club where I'm not providing any restrictions on transmission because I know you are vaxed and less likely to fall ill. Protecting the bearer, rather than others. Sort of like 'yes you can throw yourself off this bridge if you want, as long as you've agreed to wear a bungee'
Or because of the reduced likelihood of you transmitting (and there is plenty evidence that the vax does reduce transmission - not perfectly, but substantial). But if that's the case, why not also keep masks which also have been shown to have a substantial benefit.
unfinished
Which is killer (literally) factor.
We have perfect selective conditions for a (maybe) less infectious but more vaccine-resistant variant. Or maybe it will be more infectious and more vaccine-resistant.
It is insane to open up and have a free for all now.
And to add to that. My wife has just said that the xray tube at the hospital she works at has gone 'Kapow!'
If she was there, she could do all the right things, testing, checking, turning off and on again etc.
But she is here at home isolating. It will get sorted, she can deal with it from here to a certain extent. But the basic MO when something shits itself is that the support function talk the radiographer through some steps and checks whilst they are at the machine. Less experienced member of staff means more likelihood of confusion, maybe a false diagnosis of the problem, more likely more issues down the line.
This is very small example of what happens when you let covid rip.
whats the deal with this? Covid Symptom Study by ZOE
Also, the people volunteering their data to ZOE are more likely to be vaccinated I reckon. So prob not a reliable dataset for comparing vaccinated infections vs unvaccinated?
Oh, and I should mention that Serco want to charge £214 to the NHS Trust to put a grab rail up in an ultrasound room.
And, even if she could find the time, my wife can't take our drill from home with some screws and rawl plugs because:
a) The work wouldn't be insured if she did it (or I did it).
b) She would get into trouble for not treating patients if any were waiting (which they always are).
Serco are a parasitic organism on whatever host they are allowed into. Like a tapeworm. Only less morally inclined.
