SKX007

Personelly I’d get the first gen Arnie re-realise erm.. 2019? Robust solar zombie apocalypse watch with alt time for travelling, no servicing required.

Edit: this

I've got a GShock for robustness. SKX007 doesn't have a calendar variant, does it? My Oris is almost perfect but since when has that been good enough!

It's got a day - date. Do you really need a reminder it's still 'June'?

I'm only kidding by the way, you please yourself what to buy. The SKX is a bit basic now with it's no hacking or hand-winding movement.

The SKX007 has day and date. It's not technically got hacking, as such, but it ticks back a second at a time if you hold the crown back gently while adjusting.
It doesn't have hand winding. I've never found mine needed it, but I do wear it most of the time.

Ah, I see. I've not yet forgotten the month, but I wouldn't put it past me! What I would love is for Oris to drop from 44 to 42mm, and put in a day-date version of their calibre 400 (10 year service cycle etc etc) and that I'd be happy wearing day in day out. I'm happy wearing a 2-3000 euro watch daily, including fieldwork. My Pelagos, I wear beach, sea etc but I don't really want to scrape it across karstic limestone. My Explorer 1, I've been hiking in it, Greece and Thailand, but found myself readying to protect the watch more than myself in a fall! The Milgauss, too expensive for me to be comfortable wearing other than special occasions. Same for my VC, which as a teeny hand cranker in gold is only getting worn a few times per year.

What about a Hamilton Jazzmaster Day Date auto? 40mm size, 80hr power reserve auto movement. Day Date features like above and no annoying numbered minutes track.

Also cheap enough to damage it in a bicycle crash or careless beach sunbathing.....

Noo!  This is an inclusive discussion about watches of all types, we don't discriminate here,  especially not on cost.

@SSS, thanks and a good call but both the Hamilton Jazzmaster and the Tudor 'Glamour' Date-Day have weird, slightly funky, case shapes. I trieds dem all I did!

Don't think that I could bring myself to spend more than £2.30 on something called a "Hamilton Jizzmaster".

I just bought an Apple Watch Ultra*.  Will you discriminate against me?

.

.

.

*To wear on my right wrist - it’s a phone and payment system. The left wrist is for a proper watch.  Now you’ll discriminate against me.

In order to make sure your Hamilton Jizzmaster is fully wound, place on your preferred wrist and move vigorously in a to and fro motion…

Cost is not an issue here. I also sport the trusty Vostok Zissou! And SSS can beat us all hands down on value. It's all good!

I wear proper watch left hand and a Garmin bracelet thingy on the right. I disabled the watch function, so the screen is all black unless I tap it. When it breaks, I won't be replacing it: watching the slow but inevitable decline of my fitness is not something I wish to document forever.

@IGM, RE: hand shandy watch charging, be wary of the material. A steel watch with full bracelet adds a lot of momentum to the stroke. If I got the Rolex DD full platinum I'd risk crushing my pelvis on the ins and emasculation on the outs :O

Anyone seen one of these in the flesh?

Can't decide if I love the look or it just looks like a very expensive Swatch. Quite a few discounts available now and am tempted.

@wait4me, yes I've seen one in a boutique (aka 'shop') but didn't try it on. It has the 400 calibre, which is a very good thing. Go and try it on!

Marloe Coniston Auto "Trackday"

Design cues from Gulf racing livery.

Marloe are a small brand with their HQ in Kinross (a short bike ride from where I live).

Basic movement calibre (Miyota/Citizen 8N24) but lovely to look at.

Sorry to go against the thread, but where’s the best place to go for n-1?

Have a Tag Carrera (not sure exact model, but it’ll be on the paperwork) from 2007ish that I haven’t worn in years. A bit too common for the local-ish places I’ve approached. Where would be the best place  for a safe sale? Seen the adverts at the back of car magazine I occasionally get, but not sure of their reliability or is it like We Buy Any Car and every tiny little thing is used to knock down initial offer.

Any advice or experiences appreciated.

I took a Carrera to a a pawn brokers called Ramsdens in Altrincham. They gave me what I considered a reasonable price for it, especially as I bought it second hand so it had already done a lot of depreciation. Cash in hand, job done.

I just found it on their website though, frankly they're raking the piss with the selling price!

Looking at ebay sold prices they have sold for £800-£1200 so I think you are right £700 (or less.)

No, they gave me £850, which I thought was decent for a dealer.  I paid £900ish, (can't remember exactly) for it on eBay in 2019.

On a flight to Greece now. Four days. Four watches. Oris Day-date, Rolex Exp1, Tudor Pelagos and VC Patriomony. All bases covered, and even some Hellenic flag Speedos as crowd pleasers for the beach. Tally ho!!!

Well I pushed the button on the Oris Coulson. Bought blind online from C.W Sellors for under £1700 which seems a crazy bargain on the face of it, considering it's still up for £3750 from plenty of shops. Free winder too.

Wish me luck. Will put some pics up when it arrives.

Nice work - looking forward to pics and your thoughts! The Propilot (at least in steel) wears surprisingly comfortably for its size, I think partly because the strap and clasp are excellent

Lovely!
Clear up something for us: apparently Ti watches scratch more easily than steel. And I found with a Ti ring that it would mark other items, like sinks etc.
Have you experienced either of those?

Ello (still waiting for lunch break at a conference). The Pelagos is grade 2 Ti, which is supposed to be not as good as grade 5 (I.e. Omega and RLX titanium [lol]). I've worn my Tudor for months at a time, including fieldwork. It's not minty but it's fine, very happy with it. Do you want me to go find a sink to have a Mohs-off?!

I had one and passed it onto someone on here as it never got worn. Nothing special, but it was reliable, ledgible and kept good time being a quartz. Mine was quite small but that's OK on my weedy wrists.

Genuinely nothing to get excited about, but I don't mean that in a bad way.

Lorus are pretty good for the money - Seiko's budget range. I used to have a titanium version, it was fine.

The advantage of Timex is Indiglo but now that everyone carries a phone all the time it's less of an advantage.

I ended up with a bargain Lorus precisely because I didn't want a Timex. Best £20 I spent last year TBH...

Thanks - the Lorus isn't £20 any more!

Those Bertucci (sp?) field watches that were getting rave reviews about 1-2years ago are now 2-3x the price. I'm sure the basic one was £35ish back then

Yeah, Ti doesn’t play well with glazed ceramics, and once you’ve marked something, it’ll never come off! I’ve got a Ti ring on my right thumb, and it’s scratched to buggery, almost matt, but I’m not fussed, and it has marked a few things, but nothing important. I’m not sure I’d consider a Ti-cased watch, personally, unless I got lucky on the lottery and could afford the Ti version of the Omega Seamaster Ultradeep, which has an unusual case with no spring bars, the strap fits into a slot, so more security with a NATO or ZULU.

Liking it a lot.

As you say, comfy & easy to read.  Accuracy is being tested over the next 48 hours but the 400 movement seems to have a good reputation.
