Ha ! On reflection I should have got the midi sized Seiko Solar rather than a mechanical version for holidays.

Beaverbrooks are clearing out their Wolf watch storage. Good reductions; good value, you decide.

Picked up a nice single watch roll yesterday. The boxes appear well made too.

My replacement £11.99 Seiko Kinetic capacitor arrived in the mail today - kudos to https://maddisonsofdurham.co.uk/ for super prompt service.

I needed to remove my loose date window surround first -  so back off, crown out, movement and chapter ring out to get rid of the errant date window surround, then reassemble. I was watching the video that @tall_martin linked to while changing the capacitor but pretty straight forward - one screw to remove the rotor, a gear wheel, then two screws to release the capacitor asembly. Reverse with new components. Pick it up and it's going! On the wrist for a couple of hours now on my new winder.

Thanks again @tall_martin for the prompt to just do it!

New watch day!

I retired* on Monday and couldn't resist treating myself to a new watch to mark the occasion.

I've always liked the look of the Yema Superman and when this maxi dial popped up on eBay on Tuesday morning I couldn't resist.

I don't do metal bracelets so opted for the Tropic dive band. Very pleased 😀

*If my post retirement plans come to fruition I will be putting this diver to use in the not to distant future 😎

I'd been doing the posting equivalent of biting my tongue on that one, glad to see it sets some else's teeth on edge!

Nice, though I do prefer the look of the metal finish bezels.

Congratulations on your retirement, and the Yema - to my eyes a very nice looking watch particularly with that strap.

What johnners said apropos of what Kryton said though!

Can anyone recommend me a range of GADA's / non dive/tacho bezel watches to look at please?   I'm looking for an aqua-terra alike albeit cheaper and had settled for a green Tissot Gentleman, then got distracted by a Ti Gentleman quartz, then the Carerra 3 hand although thats too spendy.  Looking at options around £500-£800 2nd hand is fine, office suite/bling but 100m water resistance.

Thanks

I'd say the Smiths Commando or Everest would fit the bill. They might not be spendy enough for you and they don't have the wide brand recognition you might want though. Unassumingly small by modern standards, or "a child's watch", depending on your personal view! Full disclosure, I've got a Commando and love it.

Quite annoying to get hold of new though, a bit like getting a ticket for Glastonbury!

Nice one(s) @bregante ! I like the look of the Yemas.

Another Smiths fan here. Have an older Everest and it's lovely. (I'm not a fan of the slightly whizzy Miyota movement, but the watch itself is lovely and the newer designs are lovely.) I did also have a Speedbird GMT which I sold to Mr Crossley on here (with full buyback rights if he tires of it...)

@kryton57 If you don't mind a homage, I've been very happy with my Steinhart Adventure 39. 5% of the cost of a Rolex Explorer, 95% of the looks and 100m water resistant.

I do like that - not a great departure looks-wise from your Everest imo but in a bigger case size. The Swiss movement might be enough to pique K' s interest!

It does indeed, Sellita as per  CW yet half the price.  Looks flat in the though, @chipps how shiny is it?

I wanted green, the metropole version could do the trick but the web photo again looks flat, the rest the darker fade-to-black green that I want, I wonder which it is? But the funny logo at the 12 though….

Here’s the new, rather…bright Casio, and I’m liking it a lot. In particular the fact that I can make adjustments and set alarms etc without having to Fanny around with little buttons and try to see what I’m doing on a teeny little screen, I can do everything on my phone screen.

I’ll be getting a new strap for it soon, a woven nylon strap which will be a bit brighter, but will be slightly elastic so once I’ve adjusted it with a buckle I’ll just need to slide it on and off. Lazy bugger that I am, but it just makes a change from black, grey and polished steel that I’ve been wearing for most of my life, and I’ve just got bored with it. 🤷🏼

Yesterday's try ons. IWC Timezoner - very cool and actually wearable 46mm but no.

20240402_164236

New Blancpain FF 5010, 42mm and thus, too small! I found it a bit boring, weak beer version of the 5015.

20240402_170321

Blancpain FF Bathyscaphe ceramic 43mm. Amazing dial but too angular and I don't like the handset or indices.

20240402_170510

Chopard L.U.C. Time Traveller One, in platinum.... Obviously I was after the steel but that's what was in stock. Nice case and relatively legible display for a Louis Cottier worldtimer movement but I prefer when all is done through a single crown. One left of a Paris boutique 15 piece limited edition steel case blue dial could have been ordered but they won't discount LEs. Nice. Very nice. But no cigar.

Yeah the Blancy 5010 is the best of the bunch to my eyes but still not for me. Generally, I'm a 'less is more' chooser and tend to default to steel sports watches. I've one that's a bit jazzy and I always feel a bit gauche when wearing it (very rarely).

Like bollocks you are. As a general point I don't like being negative on this overwhelmingly positive thread but yours is the only watch on the latter part of the page that isn't absolutely minging. And I'm no fan of the 5kx!

The strap looks nice though, I find MNs a very comfy option.

Yes I agree, I’m merely 2hrs in to the MN but it’s pretty invisible.

YMMV re taste of course but I like the look of this one.  My iPhone washed out the pics, the orange is much more vibrant on dial and strap as is the gold bezels numerals and hands.    This is perfect for my purpose.  A holiday pool watch that won’t get may arm chopped off for theft, summer colours, quick drying not sweaty strap, looks decent yet I wouldn’t exceed my max HR if I whacked it on the side of a pool.

I know it's basic, cheap and plastic, but I really like this new one for me. My old Casio threw a proper wobbler last week, and even getting a new battery in did not solve a random beeping and oddities on the screen.

This is my functional watch for the hill and trails. I've had Timex before when I used to sail and this one has reminded me that it's the antithesis of Casio - clean design, few random words printed on it, and really intuitive to use.

it’s like the Casio F91

Except the display is much bigger and far more legible, and the backlighting is actually effective. I know it was a game changer in its day and is still revered by many but with my ageing eyesight the F91 is a pointless relic.

The A168 though...

Hurrah, the forum, it’s working again!
Right, I received the new woven strap for my Casio earlier today, and I’m very pleased with it. The yellow actually matches the yellow of the case, and it’s nice and cheerful for the warmer weather. I’ve got a plain black one and one that’s more blue, grey, green with some orange, and because the springbars have a little tag on them with a slot in the strap end they’re a doddle to swap around.

And cheap, at around £8 or so.

Liking todays watches, I do like Matt’s, but as a fat old knacker I can’t really get away with wearing that type of watch. I feel like an imposter even wearing my Garmin watch!

Also Counts has got me thinking about a bright coloured G Shock…..hmmm, will have a look around. Was going to buy another Nite watch but think a more colourful option is needed. (I have an orange faced Nite watch already)

🤣

My entire life wearing a watch has been entirely monochrome, that’s at least 60 years, although there may have been the odd coloured stripe here or there, so I feel it’s well past time I wore something that might be best described as ‘gaudy’! 😁🌈

I bought one of those straps for my Suunto on a whim. That big black adaptor/luglump thing seemed to defeat the purpose of a funky lightweight strap for me. It would look much better/full gaudiness if somehow the fabric connected directly to the lugs.

I've bough two watches over the last couple of months, both so I can monitor my blood sugar level - started on an insulin pump three months ago.

On the left a Fitbit Versa2 from eBay for £72 (daily wearer to work where it does get beaten up a bit) and on the right a much newer Garmin Instinct 2 which I wear outside of work.

I sold an older Garmin Instinct Surf Solar on eBay a few days ago, losing only £14 since buying it direct from Garmin in December 2021!

@kamakazie, yes, both steel models are very nice - standard black 'n orange and the blue. The platinum (in addition to being 50k...) has a blue I'm not keen on, and there is no improved finishing to the movement. There is also a DLC black steel model which they had in stock but not at all my cup of tea. For those who don't know the Louis Cottier worldtimer system, here is a quick review of the blue steel version -

It can be done via a single crown though, which I prefer. So, I like worldtimers, despite the clutter, and would use it regularly for work calls around the world but the only ones I really like are Patek and VC, which aren't options. I do have a solution, which I'll post here soon!

I like the Brown one in Kamakazie’s post, that’d be my pick.

So packing up ready for sale, I wondered in an antithesis to the thread have I already got a GADA I don’t value too much which I should make use of?

It’s accurate, sapphire, a little chintzy and although I wanted a non dive bezel this is discrete.  🤷‍♂️

At the more affordable end of the worldtimer genre I picked up one of these a couple of years back - only slightly influenced by my weakness for a green dial! That dial looks a little flat in this picture but is really quite lovely in sunlight,

@Kryton, was it the Frederique Constant? https://frederiqueconstant.com/fr/watches/collection/manufacture/manufacture_classic-worldtimer/fc-718nwm4h6/

Looks nice but the calendar covers the antinodal locations! Also, I don't think the hour hand can move independently.

Most amazing mechanism is the VC, which can do all 37 times zones, including half and quarters, with the minute and hour hands snapping to the correct position for each variation. I work in India and (formerly) Myanmar, which have 30 minute offsets. I don't like the Overseas case but, in any event, all unaffordable!

Unfortunately not so much, as there is such a big gap between the contra-rotating ring and the city names. Ball make a nice one, in a diving case and very affordable but I already have a Ball and didn't need a 'daily'. I want, YES I WANT (can you hear that at the back?), a bling-meister for summer parties etc! I have started the new obsession of associating watches and pocket knives, and while the 5015 could arguably match up with some techy futuristic super-steel blade with a titanium grip, I'm also tempted to get a short sabre, for opening bottles of champagne....

From Geckota themselves, it’s the Phalanx QR Sailcloth.

It does have a strong taper, 20mm to 16mm which isn’t for everyone.

Edit: whilst changing the strap I noticed and remembered these gilt versions were a limited run of 100.   So that’s 2% of them on the forum, maybe 3 ‘cause I’m sure a while ago there was another chap with one.

@pisco - not possible, and the majority of the big black thing is the fitting on the end of the strap, the actual adapter to allow the strap to fit the watch is the thin metal strip with right-angled ends for the spring bars; I don’t think there’s any way that the nylon could be attached to the watch any other way. There’s just not enough room to fit something like a ZULU/NATO strap to a Casio without an adapter, and the adapter I found for my old Casio analog is horribly clunky and just doesn’t fit very well - this system is far superior, simpler and far easier to swap straps.

The Casio with the old style adapter is on the far left in this photo, you can see how bulky and clunky it is; that was the only option available until these new straps and adapters became available.

This came up on IG as I was scrolling through my normal feed of dogs and mountain bikes 😉 I am a sucker for a blue dial, but since I already have one Torgeon Chrono of the same size (also blue dial, brown leather strap) and my super light Citizen diver (unsurprisingly a blue dial!), I have no need for it at all.

Plus I wear my Fenix 90% of the time... that blue tho, it's calling to me 🙂

Edit: Blimey didn't expect the image to be the size of a carriage clock!

Edit: Blimey didn’t expect the image to be the size of a carriage clock!

I had one, it's a very big watch lug to lug, unless you have large wrists - over 7.5 - it won't look great (YMMV).  I have 6.5 in ch wrists and sold it on.

Ah good to know. I have wimpy wrists. My plan was to try one on next time I’m in Birmingham, but sounds like you saved me a trip!

Fifty Fathoms arrived this morning. It will certainly not be a daily wearer but I will plonk it in the sea next week in Dorset.

Very nice @gaidong!

So, NWD for me also today.   First of all, some of May know i like a little storyboarding to go with my watches, so here’s the hint/back-drop:

IMG_5389

So, recently I was looking for a GADA, and specifically something for work that is pick up and go, and avoids the hefty weight of the Vajoux 7750 in my Aquaracer while I’m waving my arms for sales presentations 🙂   Also, a while back I mentioned and have maintain an eye for a Moonphase, and all the talk of world timers got me exited, so it came to pass that I spotted something on sale that covered all those bases:

Yep the Citizen Tsuki-yomi moon phase world timer watch.    And it has the added benefit of being Titanium and bloody light:

And so you don’t need the manual, crown out to first position and turn the indicating second hand to the position indicated on the back:

I bloody loves it I do! ☺️.  It replace my AT Chrono which will be in the classifieds shortly.

@Kryton57 -  I really like, simple and no doubt really well engineered. Much nicer than those gaudy new car priced world timers above
