MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
There's rumours going round at work that the company is looking back at internet usage and is going to sack people who have been using it too much over the course of the working day.
I often have the internet up in the background whilst im doing boring bits of paperwork. I work on my own from a remote site and quite often the chat on here or facebook is the only human contact I have all day.
Now usually I dont pay any attention to stuff like this but the person this info came from is quite high up in the organisation.
Could they really do this? Especially if you have an umblemished service of over 12 years??
Anyone got any stories about similar? Has it happened to you?
I came close, Gingerflash got warnings.
They can do it but they should follow a dsciplinary procedure. Would normally be used to get rid of crap folk, so if you are doing a good job you may be in a better position
Have you signed an internet usage policy? As above, it'll probably be a smokescreen to avoid redundancy payments 🙁
SO GET BACK TO WORK 🙂
There's rumours going round at work that the company is looking back at internet usage
It really depends how far back & whether or not you're allowed any or some internet time
They can't simply go back months to try & catch people
It could just be a good scaremongering tactic to make you stop!
They seem to be getting rid of all the people they can, 14 managers last month and a load of graduate trainees this week.
I didnt even know we had an internet use policy, I certainly have not signed one. However, since the rumour broke I now know we can only use it for 30mins (personal) a day. Like I said I often have it on but just dip in and out but its more like an hour and a half a day!
Im sure it is just another rumour but then again it could be serious!
I hate things like this, I'm quite chilled usually but this has spooked me, it would be just my luck to get the boot for something so cack!
Was partially involved a few years back - though I was on the 'sacker' side as opposed to the 'sackee'.
Typically, in the cases I've seen (where there was most definitiely an internet usage policy), random checks are made on individuals in a workforce for, say, a working day.
Evidence of falling foul of the procedure would then likely warrant a full, two-week, study.
This then comes back with all manner of data: Sites, IP addresses, types of site, times of usage etc.
In the cases I saw, users' max usage periods often coincided with their bosses calendars (While the cat's away, etc..)
Full procedures were followed (warnings etc) but, inevitably and rarely, people were let go specifically as a result.
Never, in my case, was it used as a legit way of scalping deadwood.
However - times have changed...
Can't imagine an immediate sacking though.
I now know we can only use it for 30mins (personal) a day. Like I said I often have it on but just dip in and out but its more like an hour and a half a day!
Now would probably be a good time to cut that down a bit, no?
Its all ready stopped no more internet use.
I'll just read the paper like everyone else, (I dont think they log how many times the lads at other sites go to the loo with a copy of nuts!!)
Only joking, I rarely use it for ligit work stuff so I might ask the IT department to disconnect me from all but the company intranet.
Its strange this one... I use the Internet frequently during my working day and now the company are introducing Microsoft Communicator... its live chat !!
I am not bothered if the company sets out a policy of internet usage that is aimed at sacking people... If you are unionised.. take advice as to how you can protect yourself, I am pretty sure as others on here have said, that your company should have stated the requirements of internet usage and asked you to sign an agreement.
I also save all my usage in my fav's box... (the majority of it is work based but a percentage is what I privately use.)
I think so long as you have no Pron sites listed you should be ok anyway..
Im in unison and the workforce out in the field is still quite unionised. I was thinking about asking but dont want to draw any attention to myself untill the rumour turns into reality.
I've wondered about this
At one of my workplaces I'm office-bound for the day & ALWAYS have firefox on, reloading every 10mins or so on few sites (inc the stw forums). EVery now & then I'll have a quick look
Nobody's ever said owt, but ...
we have a rather zealous filter and get locked off our system when searching for shotgun cartridges and have to explain why we searched them to half a dozen managers
necessity for squirrel control in woodlands
Zempy ... If you are unionised... you are the union.. maybe the union officials are aware of it and maybe not.. the officials will not disclose who you are just cos' you asked them to clarify what is still technically a rumour..
My gaffer told me if i cause a train crash and i was on internet at the time i could get in trouble! 🙄
