The sell by date is the least of your worries if you're drinking that pish!

I got given two bottles of Pilsner by the next door neighbour, best before Nov 1996!
Still fizzy though!
But had lots of things floating in it. ๐Ÿ˜•

i believe the SBD is linked to the fact that they have to have an alcohol by volume level stated. Beyond the SBD they can begin to re-ferment in the bottle and get stronger. Its fine to drink but creates issues with drinking guidelines etc.

When I was a student in liverpool our local (pikey area (cue joke about liverpool)) offy specialised in cheap out-of-date beer. Never made us more ill than drinking that amount would do....

When I knocked my shed down last December I found a box with 6 bottles of homebrew in it that was about 10 years old and covered with cobwebs. In the spirit of "If it hasnt got a skull and cross bones on it drink it and worry about it later" I necked the lot one evening and got very ill. I cured my self with a fry up though ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah it doesn't go "off" but it won't taste as nice. Though with John Smiths i doubt you'll notice the difference ๐Ÿ˜‰

Its really a guess on the brewer as to how well it has been processed. It might last way beyond the sell by date, it will not get any stronger. the beer has been pasteurised so no more fermemtation will take place, so no gain in ABV.
If its gin clear , with no smell of vinegar or puke then it will prolly be OK

Sell by dates are good. They mean that yu can buy cheap beer that is reaching said date. Was offered a can of Guiness by my uncle the other date. Chose the newest one. 1991. Tasted ok.
