Were they in Ireland? Being Irish and all. Does the law reach to there?

Despite what a lot of you lot think, including some of your politicians, no, it doesn’t. Although to be fair, their comments didn’t go down well with the majority of Irish (as far as I could ascertain from Irish Twitter anyway…). I’d imagine the gratitude for the benefits of empire still runs deep, even generations later. 😀

I may regret asking this, but WTF is WEF?

I don’t want to know because nothing will beat the image in my head of King Charles being a pro wrestler.

Rhetorical questions, but never mind. 😎

Ha, sweaty Andrew's been heckled in the street. Although I agree with the sentiment, when him and his siblings are marching behind their mother's hearse, it might not be the most appropriate time.

I thought he had to withdraw from Public life?

Sweaty nonce should not be there.

Agree he shouldn’t be heckled. Also agree that he shouldn’t be playing a public role. He should pay his respects in private, not be part of any public event or pageantry.

If you see the vid of the heckler & the way he suddenly disappears backwards at high speed you can see why these people get arrested. It’s at least partly for their own safety.

Didn't realise it was illegal to shout things out in the street. Will have to keep an eye on what goes on there. I'm betting he'll be released in the morning without charge.

Me neither. How has that annoying git with the booming voice who's been shouting outside parliament for years gotten away with it?

It was discussed very quietly in private, not really something we can protest about any more.

Shouting out 'Sweaty Nonce!' would have been funnier. Then at least there would have been an outside chance the Daily Mail would've printed that as a headline, which would have been amusing. Or even
'Andrew, you're a disgrace!' spat out with sufficient heartfelt venom.
What's the chances that person's gonna end up giving their opinion on mainstream news?! and the tedious rounds of media hmm

Where did the Royals get all their medals?

Their mum 😂

Even the ones that were actually earned, which the last time I checked was two.

The jubilee medals are a gift even for those serving. The rest of the paraphernalia are titles related.

Yeah just remember it’s not what you did it’s who you popped out of.

It would only be Andrew's South Atlantic Medal and Harry's Afghanistan Medal, that's from the ones alive. The late Prince Philip also earned some of his.

The rest are freebies.

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/left-wing-mayors-defy-macrons-order-to-fly-flags-at-half-mast-5w33ml78k

What a ridiculous order from the French government. France isn't in mourning over the death of QE2, why would it be?

'This request seems incredible to me,” Mr Galut, a former senior Socialist Party official, said. “I respect the sorrow of our English friends but I will not put up the French flag [at half mast] over the municipal buildings of Bourges.” He said later on France 3 television: “We are a republican country. Why should I pay tribute to a foreign monarch?”

Can we get a separate thread for everyone ragging on the monarchy?

This thread "Thoughts with the Queen and her family" is clearly for people to express their sympathy, not to attack the monarchy. Despite what most of you say, a lot of people admire and respect the monarchy and are reasonably upset to lose our monarch of 70 years.

Unfortunately, anyone with that sentiment appears to have been driven away from this thread by now.

I believe in free speech, in the right to protest. The downside is that it allows people with no sensitivity whatsoever to force their views and crass humour on others with no thought or empathy.

Welcome to any vaguely political Singletrack thread. This thread is split between lots of different people to some extent marking the Queens death with a bit of empathy and the other half is the same handful of posters trying to drown out the majority and banging on about freedom of speech being curtailed, which is a little ironic.

And people have done that but it has quite naturally lead to a broader debate on the monarchy as a whole, the national response to the death of one (which the vast majority of people in this country have never experienced) and the future role of a monarchy in an increasingly isolated and irrelevant nation.

FWIW, I'm pretty ambivalent about "the monarchy" although I find some of the pageantry and traditions are interesting to watch (and then if you think about them longer, absolutely batshit mental at the same time!).

I kind of admire a lot of what the Queen has done in some ways; it can't be easy doing endless formal parades, meetings, events etc under constant media scrutiny (even if large parts of the media have been bought off to be utterly sycophantic to it all) but at the same time there are certainly wider issues to address especially on a background of cost of living, wealth inequality and so on. The "now isn't an appropriate time for this discussion" crowd sound a bit like the folk in the US who shut down any discussion on gun control in the aftermath of another mass shooting.
"We must mourn and grieve, not discuss reform at this sad time..."

But now, at this stage, the 24/7 news footage and the inane commentary along with the implied "thou shalt mourn!" and the heavy-handed policing of anyone daring to show even the slightest hint of anti-monarchy views is really getting annoying. I can see why there are comparisons to North Korea...

And God only knows what the Government is going to sneak through under cover of this. Liz Truss has really landed a lucky one here. No wonder Boris is so pissed although I like to think the Queen hung on just long enough to get rid of him.

“We must mourn and grieve, not discuss reform at this sad time…”

no one is saying that, I would probably join in a debate on the future of the monarchy….. in another thread! I can’t imagine the mods would close it and tell everyone to post in here.

Next time JHJ starts a topic on Middle Eastern arms sales I might flood the thread with quotes on the obscure and ancient rights of the privy council. I’m assuming it’s as relevant and appropriate as what is happening here

I think the key word is 'thoughts'.

People have their own thoughts on this and no one owns the narrative.

Nope. It's just descended into a chip throwing contest. Standard STW!

And in STW/internet style, those with balanced views get put off posting amongst all the shouty types.

You therefore end up with a thread that seems to support one argument as the less shouty folk have gone off riding/have something better to do...

Time for a post brekkie ride!
