We will be in touch
Four and a half weeks to go before a 7 day race/event... just wondering what training people would still be doing and how you'd taper for the event?
(3 places have become available on the Trans Provence if anyone fancies it).
You're mad, you'll do it, have fun.
Isn't there some sort of cooling down period before you undertake the event? isn't it something like train like a looney then rest 4-5 days before and eat loads.. looks like a plan to me.
3 weeks out - very hard training week - 3 hard days, 3 easy days
2 weeks out - 2 hard days, 1 easy day
1 week out - 1 hard day Tues or Wed for the event start on Sat/Sun
that's what I do anyway and I've never yet failed to be mediocre
Cheers uplink... I strive for mediocrity 🙂
A lifestyle expert will be along soon 🙂
To me I'm not sure there much point doing anything at all in the last week let alone doing something hard. It is not as if you will see the performance gains, by this point you will be as ready as you'll ever be, I would be looking to conserve my energy
Personally I'd train hard 3 weeks out, train easy 2 weeks (just to keep weight low) and not do much at all in last week. Maybe some swimming or light runs. If you are about to spend 7 days on the bike I'd think to go into it mentally "bike fresh" so to speak ??
Just my two pennies worth
Yo southern yeti, like yourself i am doing this years event, and the vague plan is to ride hard this week and next and then the week before to do a couple of rides. The guys above are right, its too late really to get any performance improvements at this point but it will probably help you have 'good' legs for the race.
Like you, i am aiming for mediocrity! I live in London and the nearest real mountains are Wales, I havent been out for a proper mountain bike ride for a few weeks... I can see the first few days will be interesting as I try and remember what to do!
My goal is to finish, if I am last then I have still finished! :o) anything better will be a miracle.

In the last week its not about gains ... its about reminding your body how to work ...
day maybe 2 depending on timing before a race i like to go out and do a set of intervals on a street i know .... it might just be psychological but it never fails to prep me for the pain - i give it 115% on this intervals but only do 4 or 5 HARD AS I CAN . then go to the race ... when i dont do this i feel like my legs are heavy when i turn up to the race.
Ah ha... a fellow entrant!
I'm thinking of a last minute excursion to Brechfa this weekend... try and do all the trails there then maybe Afan?
sent you some stuff via Facebook dude, its obviously not fantastic training advice... for that i'd recommend riding your bike before the event and eating loadsa steak and guiness pies
*orders steak and ale pies*
I'll log on tonight MrC 🙂
cut the duration of your training down but not the intensity and don't eat as much as normal or you'll get fat(ter)
iDave... it's all about the Quinoa for me at the minute.
Quinoa, meat and beans coming out my ears.
Hahaha. Taper? You?! My money is on you training regardless! 😀
Shhh Dirty, I've got to have at least the day of travelling off!
cut the duration of your training down but not the intensity
Exactly what I was going to say. Drop it down bit by bit each week over 3 weeks. Do maybe 30% in the final week.
I have a method of neutralising any extra carbs you may eat while you decrease the intensity of your lifestyle over the next few weeks.
it involves sticking...etc. 😀
Darcy - I'm a sucker for all dieting gimmicks... share the love??
I'll share more than the love. 😉
🙂
I bet you'll struggle to even do that, let alone cut training down to 30% 😛 Looks like you'll be going away much the same time as we are 🙂
I was hoping to get a day in the Welsh mountains next weekend, its the only chance I have to go and do some proper mountain biking before the race. I've just accepted where my fitness is now and will maintain and ease back, reduce food intake accordingly and try and get some technical riding in somehow/somewhere... but god alone knows where thats going to happen.
As it was looking tough i also decided to do it for charity, sponsor me! 😉
I think it's the Brecon Beast this weekend if you want to do a Big day!
Oh, and DirtyG... you're probably right... I'm already getting a bit nervous about the prospect of not exercising... a few days off the other weekend turned me into a right moody SOB.
nah cant do anything this weekend, got my daughter. I meant the weekend after that.
So you nervous? Got the bike sorted? Good tyres fitted? Brakes tweaked? Gears working? arrgghhhh.
I've got a buckled wheel, loads of spare pads, mis-shifting gears and nothing to pack my bike in.
Also, I've threaded one of the bolts that hold my cleats to my shoes...
Yeah! Thats was were i was until Saturday! New seat post needed. Brakes needing a service. New tyres needed. Rear hub needs new bearings ... then i dropped the bike into the bike shop and am told it will be like new by tomorrow. Ha. need more spare brake pads oh and need to pop to the shop and buy some bigger balls for the descents! lol.
Buy a spare rear mech hanger!
its a ti frame, it can be bent back!

I think the techincal term is Exeraholic ?...
🙂

Perhaps you're doing the wrong kind of training for this event ?.
😉
What are you going to be riding?
Solo - you're lucky I've been swimming and to yoga today, otherwise I might get angry!
5.00, 4.59, 4.58...
xx
Yeti, I am taking my piece of history, my antique, my cash in the attic, an old ti ibis full sus. I toyed with a newer bike but need some sus help descending and it has, with a longer fork, the slackest head angle of my bikes... but still 70 degrees wont cut it i am sure! I might get another half a degree slacker with these huge thick tyres! lol.
You?
4.57, 4.56 ...
TSY's taking 60 Benson's and a lighter in his saddle pack.
I was actually doing some altitude training with the ciggies this weekend 🙂
I'll be riding a Transition Covert.
with that 66 degree head angle, wait for me at the bottom!
what flight you on?
Flying from Luton arriving at 9:40... I think.
shame could have met up, i am on the heathrow flight that arrives 11.30.
I'm flying out with a mate, not sure if I'll apply the normal drinking at airport hoiliday rules or not 🙂

Nah, thats not your style.
😀
But FWIW, I do think you do too much exercise.
😉
I hope you enjoy the event, post back on how it went.
LOL - You reckon??
Personally I don't think I do enough, but I'm beginning to understand it's not a lifestyle many appreciate.
Tipinman.. I'll drop you a message later.
Personally I don't think I do enough, but I'm beginning to understand it's not a lifestyle many appreciate.
Perhaps I am wrong then.
I had the impression that you were doing at least two activities a day.
And not little stuff either.
EDIT:
I thought the current fashion was quality, not quantity.
Why can't I have quantity and quality??
Why can't I have quantity and quality??
Yeah, maybe then.
😀
Solo, don't waste your breathe - I've had this conversation many a time with TSY. Rest is a concept TSY doesn't understand 😉
TSY, get off here and reply to my texts 😡
Rest isn't a concept he enjoys talking about.
Personally, I feel that it's a massive substitution thing going on. He admitted it to me in the lay-by with philconsequence.

Ah, I see. I did get the impression TSY was a bit touchy, so thought better to gently put that particular one back in the cupboard.
Its just that recently I've been reading about Chronic Cardio
and those types who just won't give it a rest.
But, each to their own and all that.
Its not a critique.
🙂
Actually, i'm being harsh. He does understand it, he just chooses not too. 🙂
Touchy - why I should grrrrr...
Substitution.... could be slightly right Darcy... with little challenge in my job it certainly keeps me entertained.
DirtyG - I do actually rest quite a bit, normally with a hangover. Plus I cycle my training so as not to burn out.

Well, in the end, we'll never really know
It don't amount to a hill O'beans anyhow.
Carry on !.
🙂
Nicolas Vouilloz has just been confirmed as being in this years TP race... ever get the idea that you might have entered the wrong event? Eeek.
