It's not that people can't make out what you are trying to put across, it just makes it bloody hard work for the reader, and makes the author look stupid. It's also something children can manage.

I believe that language, both written and spoken, is simply a means to communicate. If we can make ourselves understood we have achieved our goal. Here we have a mixture of people from all walks of life, engineering, medical, financial etc. I am sure the levels of English are different in different professions. Additionally there are different educational standards, some may not have done well at school and others excelled. Some focused on other subject not necessarily English.

It is often amusing when someone makes a mistake, either in punctuation or grammar, such as above, but if we have communicated our intended message then we have succeeded. We can't be correct every single time.

tomhoward's quite right. It's not that bad grammar and spelling mistakes annoy me by their very existence, it's more that it takes me longer to understand what's being said.

All of us, even closet grammar-nazis like myself, cock up occasionally, but I'm grateful that I'm usually able to string a sentence together and get my ideas across. It's a pretty basic human skill.

That said, if young'uns* are able to make themselves understood in words of one syllable using text messages, I'll not stand in the way of progress.

*I was going to say, "Da Yoof", but realised I'd get pulled up, so I guess a bit of forum-speak is allowed too.

I'm not uptight about it, but correct (or reasonably correct) spelling and grammar aids comprehension, so it seems obvious that it's better to be correct than not.

Any spelling mistakes just make me think the person is uneducated. Hence, the content of their post'll just be complete nonsense that no one with half a brain will be interested in.

It's a pretty basic human skill.

Indeed it is a human skill, to communicate. Not necessarily in English or Spanish but to make oneself understood. That may be y the use of gestures such as sign language. I believe you only need to understand a third of a sentence to understand it, therefore if spelling mistakes make it difficult to understand something it may be that you try to hard.

The spoken word is often easier as there is context but we should not be "grammar-nazis" as often it may be aimed at people who have not had some of the opportunities others have had, may just struggle with the language or indeed English may be their second language.

I work with people all over Europe and communicate in English, that said, the simple fact that those people can communicate with me both verbally and written is great as I cannot speak any other languages.

Everyone chill out, it's a forum for Gods sake.

Also if you clatter away on a keybored all day then yea spelling should be easy, believe it or not, we dont all spend all day typing reems of shite. in fact the only non verbal communication i use is, sms occasional e-mail and writing on this hear forum.

Perhaps the post with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors was written by an individual who suffers from dyslexia or has english as a second language, or maybe has had poor schooling.

Then again they may be just be a lazy uneducated slob who care not for how they appear to others. In which case they deserve a good caning across their outstretched palm, similar to what i received on numerous occasions...... 😉

I know. To be honest, my whole paragraph was a badly put together one. The first sentence reads horribly.

I don't mind spelling mistakes though, they add character to a persons posts. And when a bad speller "owns" you (like watsontony did above), you can sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that at least you're alot more intelligent than them.

pingu66, you've quoted me but I fear I've failed to make myself understood. I was trying to move beyond spelling errors (we all do it), on to grammar and the ability to succinctly get an idea across.

It's not that rare to open a thread here (for instance) and spend a few minutes trying to decipher whether the OP is on about bleeding brakes or not getting any bleedin' breaks in life. OK, so that's never actually happened, but you probably understand where I'm coming from.

And I did say I was grateful for my ability to get ideas across - I fully accept that I was lucky enough to go to a half decent school. I still don't understand compound interest though...

onceinalifetime - Account Suspended

It's not because I am a runner with your money type.
I found myself in a very tricky situation for all of new yrs eve into new yrs day.

This about tops it!!!

Bring on being able to ride aye!

Even if it is a old saracen, however weird that sounds, it may be the only way so I genuinely apologise regarding not being available to email and send out that hope rotor and mount bud but hopfeully some day soon or money bk soon for you as a payment came through to my email address before a confirmation email which was slightly shocking in a this is odd type fashion. Obviously a handsomly good low price

I honestly do not know when I will be able to get to the PO to send items so please just email with your interest to begin with.
Please don 't send me monies to then expect item arrival next day or so.
That's all.

Thanks guys for the support offered so far but knowing myself being stubborn I Will Sort this out off my own back as always but if the offers still stand then great and all the best.

I have limited access to comms so over and out!

It depends on your browser and settings what is displayed by spell checker.

I only hope this can continue in the lighthearted vein that it is and doesn't go the usual STW way.

I never understood past participles and all that at school, still don't!

I may be sending all replies via my old English teacher for checking.
Sometimes there are some posts with bad spelling & grammar that make perfect sense, then there are others that although technically perfect mean absolutely nothing.

The third category of pissed, text speak, yoof speak just makes me walk away, I may know the answer to the question but finding the question is beyond me!

I had a better source when I read this the other day but I can't find it right now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possessive_plural#Plural_possessive
The possessive of it was originally it’s, and many people continue to write it this way, though the apostrophe was dropped in the early 1800s and authorities are now unanimous that it’s can be only a contraction of it is or it has.

It's made up, much like the theory.

I'm not general that fussed about spelling mistakes.

But things like the confusion between bought/brought do grate a little.

And someone on here (I think) wrote ..... "Ey Walla"

When what they actually meant was "Et Voila" 🙂

that one did make me laugh though

I have terrible spelling it's helped by spell checkers on phones and on some forums, obviously it does not always correct the wrong meaning word.

The best bit about my poor spelling and grammar is I can read other people's poor spelling and grammar posts without any problems, and I never notice they get it wrong so it does not annoy me at all.

What does annoy me is how many people feel the need to repeatidly tell people they have got it wrong and correct them, yes it's easy if you find it easy some people don't , it does not make us bad people were not stupid we just struggle more with somthing than you do, and I'm damn sure there will bethings you struggle with and we don't.

Edit: I can read txt speak without any problems but I do agree it should be left to a txt message.

Women's clothing.

Men's shoes.

You're referring to group so you treat it as it the word as referring to an individual.

It's about the slipping of standards and the thin end of the wedge.

Some will always correct/flame/point out, some will do so when grumpy only.

No harm in being able to communicate clearly and perfectly.

Why does it always come down to slipping standards, I left school without a gse in English 15 years ago, and I'm sure there were people 15 years before that without a qualification aswell.

I am still not much better at spelling, but I do have a foundation degree in marine engineering, and the mod pay me to look after nuclear reactors, am i stupid no do I struggle with English yes.

My spelling is so bad that on many occasions predictive text and spellchecker don't even offer any suggestions. 9 o levals 4 a levels and a degree . I have never needed to count to a thousand in my entire life.

Thing is, people often don't differentiate between casual English used in Fora and more formal English used elsewhere. The casual becomes the default. I've just reviewed a number of CV's from some yoofs. They are written by degree holders with several years experience in their chosen field (top 5%?). They also appear to be written by halfwits. Poor spelling, poor punctuation, poor construction and mixing of there, they're, their, where, were, we're etc.

Anything like this usually goes straight in the bin.

Have errible spelling and punctuation.
Doesn't hold me back though but I have never written a cv or job application in my life so that probably helps.
As does predictive text which I view much like a calculator, if I have a lot of adding up to do I dont reach for an abacus.
