HAhah and again. For some reason I find proof reading the post easier than the post box.

womyn isn't it?
It depends on your browser and settings what is displayed by spell checker.
I only hope this can continue in the lighthearted vein that it is and doesn't go the usual STW way.
I never understood past participles and all that at school, still don't!
lol
I may be sending all replies via my old English teacher for checking.
Sometimes there are some posts with bad spelling & grammar that make perfect sense, then there are others that although technically perfect mean absolutely nothing.
The third category of pissed, text speak, yoof speak just makes me walk away, I may know the answer to the question but finding the question is beyond me!
then there are others that although technically perfect mean absolutely nothing.
These sound far to familiar to me.

My heart is heavy. Their yoke is heavy. The egg's yolk. Actually, the whole system's scuppered. I've done my own head in. I may be having a breakdown.

I had a better source when I read this the other day but I can't find it right now.

The possessive of it was originally it’s, and many people continue to write it this way, though the apostrophe was dropped in the early 1800s and authorities are now unanimous that it’s can be only a contraction of it is or it has.
Follow suit. Three piece suite. Three piece suit. See? It's effin' madness I tell thee.

This research never happened, not according to Cambridge University anyway 🙂
It's made up, much like the theory.
I'm not general that fussed about spelling mistakes.
But things like the confusion between bought/brought do grate a little.
And someone on here (I think) wrote ..... "Ey Walla"
When what they actually meant was "Et Voila" 🙂
that one did make me laugh though
I'd like to know what, of 9 GCSE's, davidtaylforth has.
As an aside, isn't 9 GCSE a funny name?
I have terrible spelling it's helped by spell checkers on phones and on some forums, obviously it does not always correct the wrong meaning word.
The best bit about my poor spelling and grammar is I can read other people's poor spelling and grammar posts without any problems, and I never notice they get it wrong so it does not annoy me at all.
What does annoy me is how many people feel the need to repeatidly tell people they have got it wrong and correct them, yes it's easy if you find it easy some people don't , it does not make us bad people were not stupid we just struggle more with somthing than you do, and I'm damn sure there will bethings you struggle with and we don't.
Edit: I can read txt speak without any problems but I do agree it should be left to a txt message.
It's
Women's clothing.
Children's Entertainer.
Men's shoes.
You're referring to group so you treat it as it the word as referring to an individual.
It's about the slipping of standards and the thin end of the wedge.
Some will always correct/flame/point out, some will do so when grumpy only.
No harm in being able to communicate clearly and perfectly.
Why does it always come down to slipping standards, I left school without a gse in English 15 years ago, and I'm sure there were people 15 years before that without a qualification aswell.
I am still not much better at spelling, but I do have a foundation degree in marine engineering, and the mod pay me to look after nuclear reactors, am i stupid no do I struggle with English yes.
It's a good resembalnce lol
My spelling is so bad that on many occasions predictive text and spellchecker don't even offer any suggestions. 9 o levals 4 a levels and a degree . I have never needed to count to a thousand in my entire life.
At the age of four, I could count to one thousand.
I could count to 1001.
Thing is, people often don't differentiate between casual English used in Fora and more formal English used elsewhere. The casual becomes the default. I've just reviewed a number of CV's from some yoofs. They are written by degree holders with several years experience in their chosen field (top 5%?). They also appear to be written by halfwits. Poor spelling, poor punctuation, poor construction and mixing of there, they're, their, where, were, we're etc.
Anything like this usually goes straight in the bin.
I have terrible spelling............................, it does not make us bad people .......
Hmmm..... Are you sure?
JOKE!.... 😀
WOW! Godwin's Law in a spelling thread.
Yes.... Well... 😀
I post a lot from either iPad or Phone and the darn predictive text thingy always scuppers my, what would be a, very informative and insightful* post.
*this may not always be the case.
Have errible spelling and punctuation.
Doesn't hold me back though but I have never written a cv or job application in my life so that probably helps.
As does predictive text which I view much like a calculator, if I have a lot of adding up to do I dont reach for an abacus.
The iPad is the Devil's work.... As is spill chick and predictive text. That's probably why da yoof can't construct a legible sentence.
Drac - ModeratorAt the age of four, I could count to one thousand.
I could count to 1001.
At the age of four I knew that 1001 could clean a big, big carpet and for less than half-a-crown.
I fully support the race to the bottom in the world of communication and those who think it is acceptable.
More work for those of us who can string a sentence or two together whilst the rest carry things or shovel things for a living.
People that whine about other people's poor English on a forum are utter bellends. I don't correct or tease people about their English skills except when they've tried to correct, chastise or otherwise act the snob to someone else and then have made mistakes themselves.
It's a pretty basic human skill.
It's not basic at all - it's fantastically complex!
Thats not really an illustration of poor spelling. All those words have the right letters in them, they haven't been misspelt
What that attempted Facebook meme better illustrates is good text layout. People tend to subvert themselves when they try to make text clear, by making text bolder, or typing in capitals, or increasing the text size to such a degree you only get 3 or 4 words on a line. But if you do all that you lose the shapes of the words and phrases and the legibility decreases. A good example of that is road signs used to be all in capitals - when roads got busier and the speed of traffic increased they had to switch to lower case as you can read lower case quicker. So counterintuitively if you leave text in lower case and give the words a bit of breathing space by keeping the point size modest so you get whole phrases on line you can jumble the letters as much as you like and people can read it
But as for the snarking and sniping here about spelling and grammar..... its only a forum for chit chat. I'd take the time to proof what I type if it was going out to a print run of several thousand copies or was being submitted for assessment, but for you lot I just click 'send pist'
Y'know, this thread and the office workwear one are ostensibly the same argument.
Rightly or wrongly, people will judge you by your appearance. It's human nature. And on a text based forum, how you type is how you present yourself. If your posts looks like they belong on a teenager's Facebook page, it potentially undermines your credibility. That's not irredeemable, but it means you've to work a little harder for respect. Similarly, if I were to go to a meeting in jeans and a tee-shirt, certainly with people I don't know, I'd expect to have to make more of an effort in order to be listened to.
Of course, STW isn't a job interview. When I go to work day to day, I wear jeans and a polo shirt because everyone knows everyone else, it's a relaxed atmosphere and I don't need to dress up to be taken seriously.
So I think what I'm trying to say is that it shouldn't matter in an informal setting, but it does make a difference until familiarity has been established.
People that whine about other people's poor English on a forum are utter bellends.
It depends how it's done, though, doesn't it. Sometimes I like to take the piss with a cock-up but some still get the annoyed by that, seeing it as some sort of attack on their character.
I don't correct or tease people about their English skills except when they've tried to correct, chastise or otherwise act the snob to someone else and then have made mistakes themselves.
You need to chill...
I absolutely refuse to learn or be taught anything. I have no pride in myself and I don't care whether people perceive me as being thick or lazy. I also don't care whether or not I am understood by others and simply don't have enough respect for you to write or speak correctly. I will find weak and pathetic excuses to cover my laziness and try, with all my ability, to make you responsible for my weakness by accusing you of pedantry.
It depends how it's done, though, doesn't it. Sometimes I like to take the piss with a cock-up but some still get [s]the [/s]annoyed by that, seeing it as some sort of attack on their character.
FTFY
This is the problem, those that deem it necessary to take the piss are not correct all the time but seem OK taking the piss as stated above.
However it very much depends. Some spelling mistakes are amusing, some posts make no sense at all.The fact that the person correcting someone else is "taking the piss" is the issue. If it was just for amusement it would be more acceptable as we all like a laugh. But in a deliberate attempt to belittle someone!
Ha, always the way.
But yeah, as long as it's done in a jokey fashion there's no problem as far as I'm concerned. As you write, though - to belittle is to make oneself a pianist...
It depends how it's done, though, doesn't it. Sometimes I like to take the piss with a cock-up but some still get the annoyed by that, seeing it as some sort of attack on their character.
Yes, true. If there's a mistake that makes it genuinely funny then there's a way of joining in and making a follow on ioke that's cool. But there are also some people who just take the piss or want to show how much better educated they are than the poster and do nothing but correct their mistake when there was never any risk of misunderstanding. They're bellends.
