Listening to the radio tonight, a song came on, heard it countless times before, know it word for word.
But, at 46, I had this realisation that it was *the* song that made me start to really appreciate music.
Run to the Hills, Iron Maiden.
Weird how all of a sudden the realisation came to me.
like the OP, mine was Iron Maiden, but Phantom Of The Opera
and Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
as a hip hop fan....
Roxanne Shante, Shante rox on

- Give it up!
Cool cool memories of this blaring out by the beach as a 10 yo back in '83 ish
metal guru - first record I bought
might have to stop wearing glittery stars on my cheek now I'm nearly 50 though 🙁
Please no Youtube embedded video's without the text to say the song, some of us CBA to watch the video but are interested in your thoughts.
For me =
Sit Down - James
BTW - I was a Maiden fan before RTTH (didn't want to like Dickinson when he joined) but it really did change how I thought about music.
Bohemian Rhapsody!
NMA - No Rest. I was 20 when this came out & I'd been following them for over 2 years already. Their one & only UK top 30 hit record
you can watch it if you want, but you don't have to:
I was at their gig in Leeds last week. They still do this one. sometimes
Power and the Passion by Midnight Oil from their 10,9,8 ... album. It was 1982 and I was 18 and had never been interested in music till I heard this at a mate's place. Brilliant.
First 'song' that made me realise that music could affect your mood (big brother bought the 7")
Saw The Smiths in '86 and then the South Bank Show not long after - the first (and possibly last) time I've mourned the collapse of a band:
Either White Lines or something from The Cramps' Smell of Female ep.
Fugazi-Waiting Room
I was 15 when my girlfriend at the time got me the album. I wore it out, and it still sounds fantastic now I'm 40...
Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized
When I was 16 'Liberator' (Spear of Destiny) did have a bit of an effect too.
Amazing coincidence. I opened this thread and, as I read the opening line from jondoh, my Windows Media Player (on shuffle with c.1000+ songs) started playing 'Run to the Hills'
Shiver down the spine
Go Bruce
No particular song, but about 1982 - 'Number of the Beast'(The Prisoner), 'Back in Black' and the Friday Rock Show.
That *is* spooky...
this also, Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
still good now!
I seem to remember my older sister had two albums I always would Nick from her room, Queen Greatest hits and Lou Reed Transformer. Satellite of love, later it was UB40 and Ivory Madonna.

Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized
Fantastic!
Utah Saints - Something good. I don't know how many times I have listened to the whole album. It seems to be the one go to playlist of choice on my iPod.
I actually wore out my first copy of Maiden's NOTB - bought a second copy and gave the first to my unappreciative brother.
And Alec - if you ever see this ....thanks!
Inspiral Carpets - This how it feels to be lonely
Or
Radiohead - Creep
Sweet exorcist test one.
Still love this,
And this
Epitome of hype ladies with an attitude .
The music was so good when I was a young'un (sighs)
Sultans of Ping -' Where's me Jumper', but probably due to a spate of lost kiddie school jumpers.
So:
Gn'R - Sweet Child 'o Mine - GCSE year
House of Pain - Jump Around - A levels
And oddly, En Vogue - My lovin - (the 'never gonna get it' song)- uni
I was aware of songs from when I was small, Freight Train, by Nancy Whisky, was a song that I always remember hearing on the radio, but the album that totally changed my perspective of what music could sound like was one I borrowed from a classmate, because I'd never seen a cover like it, and the very first track was like nothing I'd ever heard before, and still sounds unlike anything else from 1969:
King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King, and 21st Century Schizoid Man
Anarchy In The UK
