I predict (no real time frame) that the government of the day’s hand will eventually be forced on spending due to things getting so bad.

Don't hold your breath.

Look at where the states is.

Yep…. I don’t think the smart people are being allowed to rise to the top and we are getting the old guard who have nothing to bring to the table.

Because all they need is a 'front man' to do as they are told, having one with any form of independent thought is a risk that they don't want to take again...

I get the feeling that Sunak is diverting some of his support to Truss. He'd much rather be running against her in the final ballot, she's denser than a dwarf star. He probably also knows there is some useful dirt on her in the whips list.

I know we all talk about Truss being as dense as lead but she's an odd one.

Academically she most definitely isn't thick.

A terrible public speaker for sure but that alone doesn't account entirely for her lacklustre performances in front of the camera.

I've come to believe that even an intelligent person is hugely diminished when they embrace patently stupid ideas and ideologies.

Brexit is the perfect example. Even Stephen Hawking would have seemed a bit of a dumb ass if he'd tried to point out it's non existent merits.

And yet I have never heard of Tony Been, or indeed Michael Foot, being dismissed as a bit of dumb asses.

I guess their redeeming quality was that they were intellectuals, had they been working-class they would no doubt have been considered to be both stupid and racist.

She's yet another example of how our definition of ability defined by narrow academic metrics - writing exam essays / collating arguments - is totally lacking when it comes to the real world. Stuff like emotional intelligence, 'common sense' in the non-Tory sense of the word etc are all irrelevant provided you're good at A-levels and playing politics at uni.

I'm looking at them all and I genuinely can't decide who's worst.

Rishi would seem safe but whys a multi billionaire wanting this job? Any answer I can think of is worrying.

Okay, I will call them both dumb asses for supporting Brexit. Their dreamworld view of Brexit may differ from the thick racists but they are still dumb asses in that respect.

Politics is always binary, us and them, the only difference being in times like these it's all a bit more obvious that none of the parliamentary parties have anything to offer other than cuts in services and pay (but not their own).
Interesting how the words 'affordable' and 'arms' never seem to get conflated.

Its back to the different types of itelligence

Academic ability only shows a very limited type of intelligence.

Truss may be clever by some measures but she sure is thick as mince on others.

Yet listen to her when asked a question and there's a pause as the hamsters start slowly turning the little wheel in her head and the machine starts to stutter out whichever soundbite has been programmed into her today. Look in to her eyes and you can literally see the vacuum that exists behind them

A human void made out of instagram filters

Plenty of wealthy people go into politics and have ambition to rise to the top - probably more obvious in the US. People go into politics generally to make the world a better place - albeit in their opinion - those that want to get to the top are ambitious but there are generally easier ways to make money for the bright - worry about the stupid ones as they're earning well above their natural level.

Not if they are tories. The purpose of the tory party is to retain wealth and privilege for the wealthy and privileged.

Technically, that's still "making the world a better place". It's just got the extra words "for themselves" on the end of the sentence.

Making the world a better place for themselves. **** the poor.

Anyway back to the tory leadership results, looks like it could be a close call for all three of them especially if Rishi offloads some of his votes to favour a weaker contender.

Christ! I'm just picturing the reality of PM Truss.

She's even more vain, self-absorbed and narcissistic than Boris. And she loves the dressing up box even more than he does. She thinks she's Thatcher in the same way Johnson thinks he's Churchill

She's going to have a team of taxpayer-funded photospheres trailing around after her everywhere, isn't she? No time for anything else other than endless photo ops

And I think that within a month she'll have announced a new government policy via a tweet consisting entirely of emoji's (mainly union jacks) and no actual words and accompanied by a heavily filtered image of herself on Instagram stood on a chariot, dressed as Boudica

It's a technocratic misconception to think someone's cleverness will lead to good policy choices, politics is quite different from intelligence. I'm sure Mugabe and Marcos were clever. The problem facing politicians is having to argue that you'll get prosperity and security by taking a paycut and/or losing your job. You'd need to be a right psychopathic liar to argue that with a straight face. Hmmmm.

Yep I remember seeing a lovely infographic just before Bozza gave notice that showed both Liz and Penny pretty close in terms of tory membership approval but Sunak as much more popular with the wider public. The blue-rinsers that will actually choose the next leader apparently aren't so keen on him, I can't imagine why?

There was a bit on R4 last night where they were trying to speculate about the reasons the party faithful might not like Lil-Rishi as much, without actually mentioning the real reason, apparently he's "too rich" or a bit "too slick" a bit too "Silicon Valley"... for the Tory party???

Anyway it's all games within games, ridiculous intrigues and backstabbing which continue even after they've lynched the previous Oaf-in-chief...

I would guess Rishi isn't a fan of Liz's and Yep if he can engineer himself a loss to Penny whether it's out of spite, a final jab at Boris by proxy, or genuine dislike for her policies is really sort of irrelevant. This isn't a fit process for choosing the countries leader but it's what we're getting.

Ultimately this isn't actually an important vote, they're really just choosing the front man/woman to distract the great unwashed while they continue the smash and grab operation.

The real chance for the British people to address their 2019 mistake will come in 2024 (or apparently it could technically be as late as Jan 25 if they really wanted). So there's another couple of years of this shit show left to run still whoever gets to play the lead clown role. Lets just hope voters memories will still retain the preceding ~36 months when they get to the polls rather than Liz's last 3 most primeministerial tweets...

T'wasn't always thus, though. I get that TJ will never be a blue, and political opinions differ, but the current Tory party is that only by name, it's a million miles off the One Nation party of 20/30 years ago. I think Thatcher genuinely believed her policies would help everyone (right to buy is a good example of that). But, then, she was from a normal background, grocer's daughter and all that, so at least a vague notion of what normal life was for normal people.

Reckon.

My money is also on Johnson going full Trump, continuing to be an unflushable turd.

I mean, he didn't resign in his resignation speech, did he? And there's already been "deep state conspiracy" bullplop spouted in PMQs. Some suggestion his name should again be on the ballot for party leader contest. And so it begins.

Rishi Sunak - 137

Liz Truss - 113

Penny Mordaunt - 105

Error there from the Sunak camp - if he'd got 10 of his supporters to jump ship and lend their votes to Mordaunt, he'd have changed the members vote contenter. He'll lose against Truss.

Nothing strategic does get done, who cares about strategy when you might not be there in a few years. And I don't mean the public can call an election every 10 minutes but they should have the say (following a process/timeline etc,.) rather than the government deciding for themselves. Same for individual MP selection.

No it's all the time travelling to go back to the 1950s to collate rather racy opinions of others and then collate the results back in 2022

It's exactly that.

Ballots will be posted to members, and are due to arrive between 1 August and 5 August. The vote closes at 5pm on 2 September, with the winner announced on 5 September. They would most likely formally become prime minister a day afterwards.

It was always going to be Truss

And Johnson being replaced as Tory Leader was always going be an even worse disaster, despite all the misplaced celebrations.

Quite why so many people failed to understand who the most likely replacement would be, or worse not even care, I will never know. Unless of course they are enthusiastic thatcherite right-wingers.

No one can be sure of course what exactly a post-johnson Tory premiership will be like, but Truss for one has made her views clear on issues such as taxation and green/climate change.

64% of all voters support Johnson's net zero target as a policy priority, in contrast only 4% of Conservative Party members do. A sobering thought given the events of the last couple of days.

* Edited for greater accuracy.

Sorry that should have said "as a policy priority" I have edited it.

It still reflects the contrast of opinion between the British public and the Tory membership over the hugely important issue. It's probably safe to say that we know where Truss stands on the issue.

Less dangerous in what way? Less likely to involve the UK in a war? Less likely to introduce austerity? Less likely to ignore the issues concerning climate change? Less likely to shift money and resources away from ordinary working people and in favour of the super rich? Can you explain?

He was losing solidly against both of them, according to Conservative Home polling.

Of the two of them, which is the most like to make a colossal gaffe or have some dirt ready to go? I would be very surprised if Sunak didn't 'lend' some votes to the Truss campaign.

Liz has already released a Twitter poster which proclaims she is ready to 'hit the ground' rather than 'hit the ground running'... 🙂

I am wondering if Liz Truss is the Tory equivalent of Jeremy Corbyn? - one for the purists.

I am left of centre. I can see a remote eventuality in which I would vote for Sunak. However, I cannot even imagine how bad the Labour candidate would have to be to vote for Truss.

I am left of centre. I can see a remote eventuality in which I would vote for Sunak. However, I cannot even imagine how bad the Labour candidate would have to be to vote for Truss.

And again that is the problem, with Truss labour won't offer a substantive alternative, just more of the same with more professionalism and a veneer of caring.

which should make for an uncomfortable time for both parties, if their selection processes continue to throw up bizarre characters like Johnson Corbyn Milliband and Truss as leaders who are all as far removed in their own ways from regular normal people, It doesn't give much hope for the future.
