I'd like to know what you think of it

It's not for profit, It's just things that are good.

If anyone has anything interesting they'd like to contribute feel free to email me at alex@blacksheepboy.co.uk

You could call it a blog, but I think its a bit more than that, what? well I'm not quite sure.

The main reason I've shared it here is because I'd like to hear what you think of it, go on, tell me!

The world, as seen from the inside

Couldn't you think of anything more pretentious?

I don't really get it, I have to click on a picture to see what it is, if i don't like it I have to click on the back button on the browser, that annoys me greatly. I don't have to do that with a title and little bit of teaser text...

The content is good, but the font and colour is not good, I'm finding it hard to read, and I have good eyesight

Well I have just suggested Alex include a book coming out next month that is pretty much the epitome of "the world, as seen from the inside" 🙂

Navigation issues aside, I think it looks good and seems to be pretty fast (I am on a pretty slow connection here).

I like it. I think it is one of those sites that you come across when you're not doing "anything in-particular" and don't mind exploring around - in that circumstance, it's positively a bonus NOT to tell people what's on the other side of the onClick...

How are you filling the content - from picked rss or manually?

Rachel

allthegear,

I get that, but I don't like it, If I'm looking at something it's because I want to, not because I might want to, although pretty much all the things i have clicked on I have found interesting

Rachel, Its all manually picked, hand selected

Warton, I had thought of something else, but it was too pretentious, I'll take on board what you say though!

Elfinsafety, Tisit hoveiously

simonralli2, I'll check that out, cheers

Technically good. More trouble that it's worth to navigate though.

I can see that you've got Alt text onMouseOver, but if you think I'm hovering over every image on that page and then scrolling for more just to see if one of them might be something I'd want to read, you're having a giraffe.

If you want a webdev showcase website, it's brilliant. If you want anyone to actually use it though, I'd have a rethink if I were you. No offence and all.

I'll be adding menus shortly, once I've increased the content a bit, I'll also be including navigation along with it. (keeping it subtle though, its possible to click on the word Black Sheep Boy on the article pages)

But, the whole point of not titling the front page is that the content has to be interesting enough to be worth clicking through to, the only way for it to work is through hard work, I'm giving it a go though, got some cracking things lined up!

I think its nice enough, and much more appealing than yet another wordpress style blog, but how are people going to hear about it? I can't say i would have bothered going to it if it wasn't posted up by one of the regulars on here.

From the links therein I also seem to have preordered the new radiohead album on ridiculous pretentious arty vinyl. Again. 😳

julianwilson, speaking from experience you're not a true radiohead fan unless you buy the most expensive version of the latest album

Do I lose fan points for selling my copy of their last pretentious ridiculo-vinyl fan-pak on ebay at a huuuge profit?

allthepies, Nutt or Radiohead twaddle?

I can't believe people have the time to create or look at things like that.

Shouldn't it be astronomy and not astrology?

Interesting idea / site but for me personally, not one I would stay on.

MrNutt - touchy ?

Perhaps you should have specified which views people are allowed to have when you asked all and sundry for opinions ?

Serious question here, what is it?

Is it meant to be a collection of photos that you like with a bit of text behind? Your favourite music collection?

Looks nice I wouldn't (didn't) hang around long as I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be there for, clicking the images didn't help me either.

Navigation didnt' work properly for me. Can't scroll down to the lower row of images. Don't want to have to full screen my browser. And the 'about' link was splodged over some text.

Whats the point in asking what people think then abusing them when they say they don't like it?

in reference to allthepies statement, it wasn't particularly constructive criticism now was it, its about as useful as saying "thats sh*t" only with the addition of "your sh*t". If you post things like that why would you be surprised that it caused the (desired) reaction? If you don't like it, fine, you can't please all the people.

molgrips, what browser/screen resolution are you using? I'll look in to that!!

dafunkphenomenon, its just a site filled with interesting (yes, subjective, to some) information, articles and links. Some folk like to be kept up to date on modern culture, these are the elements of modern culture that have caught my, and my friends eyes, recently. Thats all.

Went on the Society page and some "Gainsbourg: International Trailer" started, then went on the "photography" page and the same thing happened, what are those pages about? In fact another look shows all the pages seem the same. No idea what it's all about.

I don't think I'll be going back.

From a technical point of view...

1) The index page does not auto re-size or give scroll bars so the smaller my browser window the more I can't haev access to.

2) The pages /category/photography/ and /category/music/ when loaded look identical other than one small word change. You have to scroll down a way before it is obvious that the content is diffeent. I thorght it was a broken link at first. (actually it's not just these two that are like this)

Just having the content in a different order would solve this.

3) Some of the text is two dark for a black background. And maybe some of the line widths are two wide, personal preference maybe but i think less words per line can help the legability. (and i'd like to see what it was like at a font size bigger)

From a personal point of view... I do like the design, I think it works in its context and i'll be back to read it when i have more time. 🙂

With regards the content - well done for creatively expressing yourself. Seems like some people would have us all be stereotypical sneering miserable Brits repressing ourselves and feeling too insecure to contribute anything to society except a barrage of snide negativity masquerading as wit 🙂

I'm going to go through the categories and tidy them up so that the menus work a bit better, that should help things 🙂

cheers Molgrips 😉

pretty-ish, annoying it doesn't resize for browsers, don't like the big donkey arrow, instead of 'the world. as seen from the inside' (which is a little bit art school for a site consisting of shit you like) hows about what you said up there... "It's not for profit, It's just things that are good."

I appreciate that small screens are a bit of a niche market these days, but I'd suggest that it should work gracefully down to 1024x768 at least. At this resolution, the arrows cover up the menu. Probably not a show-stopper in the grand scheme of things, but it's perhaps worth considering that most mobile phones and tablets don't have 24" widescreen displays.

What's it meant to be abahyt?

Was precisely my reaction.

But I actually find that the site is a pleasant place to be. It breaks the conventions of what most sites NEED to do in that it invites you to explore, to look around and find things out rather than say 'look at me, press this button, send us an email, buy stuff'

I really don't mind it at all.

I really don't know what it is abahyt though.

Good one.

Is that the Mister X one? With the picture of him that appears before the mask image loads over the top?

And Comic Book Store Man dares to ' go over to the dark side' 🙂

It breaks the conventions of what most sites NEED to do

Only in the same way that if I poo in the middle of the street, it 'breaks the conventions' of using a toilet...

pre·ten·tious (Adjective)
Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.

Is about spot-on. It's just a poncified Myspace type thing, pretending not to be.

Sorry, but I'll say it how it is. Can't see any originality or owt 'ground-breaking'. Just a bunch of popular culture guph.

All it says to me, is that the creator is trying to say 'look at me, look at how cool I am'. Yeah, right, whatever, girlfriend...

The web is full of that sort of toss. Stick some grot up there and stop mucking abahyt...

He can tell me what he likes. I'll have heard worse...

I'd like to know what you think of it

I've fulfilled that request. Din't see the bit where it says 'please be nice and only say complimentary things'.

Nutt's a big boy. I'm sure he'll cope...

It's nice that we all have opinions and that no-one is trying to argue the relative merits of any one opinion isn't it? That we can all say what we feel about the subject in question and not have that opinion questioned or challenged.

I have to say that I'm totally with the Elfin one on this. Whilst I "get" it, I fail to see why anybody would

a) bother to create such a thing
b) waste their time looking at it

I honestly don't mean to offend with the above but you have asked.
