My uncle, a retired Geography Reader at Aberdeen University has just had a ridge named after him in Antarctica.
He did a lot of work there and in South America. He and a collegue mapped the little known islands of South Georgia in the late 70s and self funded a publication. They didn't sell a single copy till the Ministry of Defence bought the lot a couple of years later.
He had a stroke about ten years ago, that left him with no speech and semi paralysis.
I'll raise a dram to him tonight.

sounds like he deserves it too!
๐
got a location for it? would be cool to see it on google earth!
That's pretty cool.
I'd like to have a street in London named after me.
Nice one. ๐
Good skills UncleMoonter
Proper lol
Why are you so unkind and nasty, DD?
๐ฅ
Just got a letter announcing it yesterday, once he has formally given his consent they'll publish the location.
No I'm too upset and you've gone and ruined McMoonter's thread about his uncle, which I think is very disrespectful. I think you should apologise.
The level of hypocrisy in your post is staggering. But I'll leave it at that with respect to mcmoonter's uncle.
Should have guessed it would have been you mc. Congratulations to you uncle
Fantastic, McM.
My uncle Ben has a number of Scottish hills named after him, and some rice!
Seriously, good effort McMoonters Uncle..
Is your uncle Chalmers Clapperton per chance?
Is your uncle Chalmers Clapperton per chance?
Thats the man.
That's a proper scientist type person's name, that! ๐
I mean, the 'Joe Bloggs' ridge just wouldn't sound nearly as impressive..
The level of hypocrisy in your post is staggering.
No hypocrisy at all. You're just rude.
My Grandmothers uncle is in Antarctica right now, in fact he's been their for over a century now.
Something tells me he's not waiting for a bus, avdave. ๐ฏ
Thought it might be. I have met him once - but only since he had his stroke. Dont think he'd remember me, but I do a lot of work with his colleague David. I have even taken students around some of the area where Chalmers did his phd! Well - congratulations to him - his legacy is a lot wider than a name in Antarctica though...
No he's waiting for that storm to stop so they can get to one ton camp.
Scotland the Scared - David Sugden is to have a similar neighbouring ridge named after him too in recogonition of their collaborations. Small world.
I do a lot of work on Antarctica - but only on computer (modelling) so alas, even though I may spend a lifetime working on Antarctica, there's no chance I'll get anything named after me!
Lighten up Elf.
Nice one Mcmoonter that must be very rewarding. Nice recognition.
A mate was a geologist in Western Australia, he named all sorts of Zinc finds, Some of the more silly were Thrasher, Rogue Trooper and Everton.
I worked at a place called Liquid Acrobat.
Wifey is reading the forum over my shoulder tonight, and thinks that Uncle Mc is cool for having an anarctic ridge named after him.
well boo hoo for him , ive pesonally named thousands of scottish mountain features over my 2.5 decades in the sport without any recognition whatsoever. it is beyond my comprehension that Daubers Dyke on the devils staircase does not appear on any o.s. maps to this day.......i think ill start a campaign !
