My old man has just asked me if I want his (and previously his dads) 12 bore.

How hard is it to get a shotgun licence, never had my own

You'll have to prove to the local police firearms licencing officer that you have a valid purpose for owning it.

Take up clay pigeon shooting or something.

'I just want one' doesn't go down well!

You'll need proof of land you can (permission) shoot on and good land at that. Not sure if the intended use is for clays only.

You'll be expected to have two photographs of yourself( 😯 ) with them signed on the back by a person of good standing who knows you, doctor, vicar, judge, etc.

You'll need a cabinet in which to store the gun, this needs to be fixed to a solid wall/floor in your property. Guns need to be registered in your name.

Things my of changed since i last had a license during the 90's

Got access to land. Got rabbits to shoot.

ID and refs no problem.

Will come with cabinet etc and I'll stick it in the attic. It's a bit of a relic but I'd rather take it than it gets scrapped or sold.

on the whole, if you've stayed out of bother, then its not too hard.

fill in a form ( there is a fee associated with the licence, not sure if its on application, or on being granted ), get background checked out, get your home security* checked and beyond that ... its not horrendous.

* you'll need to keep the gun in suitable lockfast cabinet which is securely bolted to the wall, normally in lesser accessible place in the house

They may also ask what you plan on doing with the gun ... clay pigeon shooting, pest control etc ... they may want you to show that you would like to use it ( legally of course )

----------------------

which brings another possibility ... if you just want to keep the gun, you could look at getting it de-comissioned so it wont fire any more, but you can still have ( would need to talk to firearms licensing dept about that )

Gaining a shotgun certificate is pretty easy, the fact your farther is giving you the gun will help.
What county are you in?

Nope its a Firearms certificate where the onus is on the applicant to provide a valid reason and specify land to shoot on. Shotgun certificate it is the police who have to prove they have grounds for refusal, usually just anything involving a custodial sentance or assault type charges i think.
As others have said, it can be a fairly long winded process getting the ticket, you'll need the forms filled out and referees, a secure cabinet and a visit by a police firearms officer who will give the cabinet a check over .
Different police forces vary in how difficuilt they make it to hold a certificate.

What sort is it?

I miss shooting, used to be how i chilled out after work when i was an unloved, un-confident spotty apprentice.

You don't need to prove good reason, have land or anything else. Just get someone to sign the form say you're not a loon, pay your £50 and bolt a cabinet to the wall.

EDIT: fisha & FFJA beat me to it.

Sounds promising. I'm in Devon.

No idea what make type it is, used to use it when I lived at home for a while but reverted to air rifle as it was quieter and made less of a mess...

They may ask if you have somewhere to shoot but it's not essential for shotgun licence.

Then as said referees and photos your on your way, they'll check you cabinet too, doors to house and window locks.

I've signed a few shotgun licences for people now you, maybe I should have charged like Dr's do.

Reminds must contact the licensing place up here as I surrendered my licence late last year. They rang to sya they hadn't received anything as yet a few weeks after but nothing more.

As above - for SGC, easy as pie as long as you've not been in trouble.

one minor spotter point, for shotgun you don't need a cabinet, but its the easiest way to demonstrate security. Plenty of cheap cabinets on Ebay

Yes, expect the paperwork to move slowly, dependent on your local constabulary - my FAC variation has taken over 2 months so far (Hants)

I applied for a shotgun licence, had a conviction for poss of an offensive weapon, and when they came round to speak to me I was off my face on hash, got it no worries.
let it lapse a few years ago now, airguns are quieter for the pot.

its every persons right to have a shotgun in the uk. the police have to give a reason for them not to grant you a shotgun certificate.

to get a firearms certificate you need to prove to them that you need a rifle, have adequate land, permission to shoot on said land etc.

its well easy, any kid that grew up on a farm has one, its not like a car license, clay shooting is fun as well!

for shotgun you don't need a cabinet

I'm fairly certain you'll need a cabinet.... been that way for quite a while.
When the firearms officer comes to interview you he will want to see the cabinet (or where it will be going if you haven't got it yet), and [obviously] if you've got the gun at your house before he comes round/you've got your licence you won't be posting on here for a bit!
Presumably if your dad's giving you the gun he has a cabinet that you can have.
