I just got a sony bluray player that streams so it's wired to the router, as is the PC. Got the PC to come up as a media source (Win 7, seems to use WMP12) but streaming videos is rubbish. Seems to be an extremely low bitrate compared to the file played on the PC and even going through file lists it seems to be being held up.

I can stream stuff off my phone over wifi with twonkyserver way way better!

Also the computer slows to a crawl sometimes and I've tracked down the file wmpnetwk.exe (windows media player network sharing service) which if I 'end process' seems to make a big improvement. I googled it and it seems quite a few have had this too.

So basically can anyone suggest a better program for streaming or suggest anything that would improve how WMP is working? Thanks.

Doesn't really help, but when I select music on my XBox streamed from the direct file on my laptop it's quick, but when done on the XBox through WMP it's dead slow.

You could try Tversity instead which is free. I found it better at streaming music than WMP.

I've been using TVersity for years, streaming to the Xbox. It's much, much better than WMP. The only time I fall back to WMP is for DRM-protected content.

I got, coincidentally, a Sony BD player a couple of days ago. I've not got streaming working yet, but I've had Serviio and TvMOBiLi recommended as DLNA streaming sources.

(where do you configure it on the Sony, is it the Network Server setup?)

i use foobar2000 with the upnp media server plugin, works great with all my music once configured, mainly mp3 and lossless wavpack.

laptop connected wirelessly and sony bdp s370 connected via router and cat5 cable

cant help with video files i'm afraid but certainly wouldnt go with the wmp option
will get video working when i have a need for it, currently i just copy the video to a usb drive and plug it into the dvd player..

Cougar - Start your media server connected to the network of course.
then on the bluray player go Setup - Network settings - Connection server settings.
With a bit of luck you will see the media server, if not try options on that page, if not try the network diagnostics, with some servers it sees the device and has connectivity to it but cant interface with the media server, sometimes a incorrect media server setting.
