Christ that was good.
Standing there with the door open before the jump was EPIC!
Meh
irony if the capsule lands on him and kills him to death ๐
If the capsule drops on the helicopter does he have to walk back to Roswell?
Cajones of titanium, chapeau Mr Bumgardener
Yep, that's a ride he'll never forget. Must be amazing to be so high above the planet. I'd love to do that (The high bit, not the jumping out bit ๐ )
Nuts.
Just got home and missed it. Is there a video anywhere?
That was fantastic. Super happy with that and for him, now to ride my bike. ๐
Amazing to watch. Well worth sitting in front of my laptop for 2.5 hours.

That is one of the best things i've seen in my life.
woweeeeeeee!
I did read somewhere there'll be a BBC and a National Geo documentary very soon afterwards and they're bound to stick it straight up on youtube.
Genuinely hoped he'd do the worm after he landed. I am disappoint.
๐ฏ
just... ๐ฏ
amazing!
although I did expect to see some kind of re-entry plasma-type glow, or at least a sonic wave boom.
That's just stunning.
the guy is a total legend, I love the 'I'm going home' line.
Genuinely hoped he'd do the worm after he landed
I was banking on the gangnam style dance.

+1
Mine even did the 'fine for the 2.45 hr preamble, crash as soon as checklist starts' to make it more tense. Got it back up though!
8,000,000 people watching on youtube during the jump.
Fantastic.
That was awesome
Landed it like a boss too
That fella's got some seriously pendulous cojones.. ๐ฏ
My feed decided to crash during freefall.
Nice one youtube :/
Unreal. I feared the worst when he got into that spin. I had my nephew watching it with me and nearly turned the ipad off. Judging by the cheer from mission control when he got stable, I wasn't the only one!
freefall at amazing speed, so Redbull doesn't give you wings afterall!

I thought something had gone wrong when they suddenly cut away from him spinning to mission control.

I was hoping for some
Watched on BBC news and youtube as they showed different shots though their was a couple second delay between the two.
I thought something had gone wrong when they suddenly cut away from him spinning to mission control.
I think they thought it had.

that's when the pre-recorded CGI footage kicked in..
kaesae to the forum!
amazing!! Was also fearing the worst during that spin!
Im guessing the feeling sat watching that must be akin (in a small way to folks watching the moon landings.
And yeah, great line before stepping off...
Best quote was "Sometimes you have to go really high in order to realise how small we really are"
I think they thought it had.
Didn't everyone? My heart was in my mouth. I think I may have started welling up! Then he regained and the cheers started; pure elation.
Awesome.
Amazing, lost for words.....
Wonder how he'll feel in the morning
Coolest thing I've seen since Evel Knievel. Period.
I was thinking that about the only other thing I've been as tense about on telly / internet was watching the Chilean mine rescue to the end.
And now back to Strictly Results and Downton Abbey for a little relaxation...
stunning, amazing .....................
Pretty amazing how quick he got back down from 24 miles up .
wonder when the other camera footage will be up .

BBC and Nat Geographic are putting out a documentary in about 4 weeks.
I didn't realise the guy communicating with him was the previous record holder. Nice touch.
My wife (as he was nearing the ground) - "Oh good, there's a helicopter near him"
Me: "What do you think the TV pictures are coming from?" ๐
My wife: "so did he break the speed of light?"
Me: "Sound dear, the speed of sound."

People at work were talking about the sonic boom damaging his hearing
Big
Fat
Arse.
I missed it.
oh arse. I was just wondering on Friday when this was going to happen.
Would there be a sonic boom? I imagine the air was so thin there would not have been much of a pressure wave.
If the freefall record still stands, I'm just wondering if that was a deliberate ploy to let Kittenger keep the record, since they're mates?
If FB had a choice, that is...

Movement in the press conference area.
Looks like the press conference will start shortly.
I reckon his average velocity was too fast to safely beat the free fall time record.
WOW WOW WOW How spectacular was that???? B*lls of Titanium!! How tense was that while he was running through the pre jump checklist??
My Palms have only just dried out!!!! Cant wait for the documentary. Amazing to see him land safely too!

There wasn't a sonic boom cos technically he didn't break the speed of sound at the altitude he was at.

There's still time to edit that....
I sat and watched the ascent, prep to leave the capsule, FB standing on the edge of history...........
Then my Internet connection went tits up and buffered for 4mins. Next thing I know he's got the 'chute open.
ARSE!
nothing happening in the live broadcast yet.....

Oh no there isn't ๐
Armchair physics fail?
Depends. What altitude is your chair currently at?

The speed of sound in air is dependent on the air temperature, the colder it gets the slower the speed of sound. The air pressure has virtually no effect. At the height he jumped the temperature was only a few degrees below freezing so the speed of sound would have been about 60mph below the figure that is normally quoted 768mph (20degC at sea level). It will be interesting to see which figure they use.
His unofficial speed is being reported as 706mph.
The image of him dropping from the capsule will stay with me forever. Amazing!!
I was around my parent's house for dinner and I honestly don't think there has ever been a time when we all gathered around a tv/computer all hooked on a particular event. I guess I got to know a little of the excitement of watching/listening to the first moon landings live.
Mach 1,24
I found it quite exciting also. I always found the footage of Joe Kittinger jumping into the blackness quite haunting. I am always amazed by how easy it is to travel 30 miles on the surface of the Earth, yet such a great effort is required to travel that far vertically.
The image of him dropping from the capsule will stay with me forever. Amazing!
Absolutely, I watched it with the missus and when he jumped we grabbed each other. It may have looked easy but there were so many different ways this guy could have died.
Cheers lad!
The numbers
Exit Height 128,100 feet
velocity 833.9 mph or Mach 1.24
Freefall duration 4.20 sec
Freefall Distance 119,846 feet
+1 impressed
google says mach 1.24 = 943.896743 mph ?
The issue for me wasn't whether a sonic boom would be created (although that is interesting and not something I considered) but that a sonic boom is created at the moment something breaks the speed of sound barrier, so surely even if a) there was one and b) there wasn't any sound proofing/protection in his helmet he still wouldn't be able to hear it, because he'd be travelling faster than the soundwaves he was creating?
Pepared for physics fail!
I always found the footage of Joe Kittinger jumping into the blackness quite haunting.
I remember him saying that when he jumped, because there is no wind noise and everything is so far away that it doesn't change size, he wasn't sure if he was actually moving or just hanging there!!
weird that he couldn't feel a lot - because of the pressure suit.

It is at 20degC. As said above at his altitude it would have been a few degrees below freezing and the speed of sound would be around 700mph.
Edit: 672.5mph it seems.
Makes sense, didn't realise that it was changeable.

Glitch bump
weird that he couldn't feel a lot - because of the pressure suit.
It's because the air is so thin at that altitude there's no wind resistance or noise. He had to jump off the capsule very carefully as he wouldn't be able to correct himself like a normal skydiver until he got lower down and the atmosphere was thicker.
Did anyone get a nice big screencap of him sitting there with the door open?
I did a print screen...then turned the pc off without pasting.
Duh.
I am a bit surprised at how big an event this is deemed to be. Barring a serious technical malfunction it was always going to work. It's pretty cool and was no doubt a blast for the fella jumping but if I'm honest I'm more impressed with the mars rover.
