For anyone who missed the original Cutting Edge documentary, there's a series starts tonight

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/big-fat-gypsy-weddings

Its clearly a serious analytical piece of investigative journalism, looking at a culture and the way it embraces and celebrates the institution of marriage. And is in no way a cheap shot, and a chance for people to point and guffaw in horror at pikeys

I'm interested in watching this, as I know very little about gypsy culture, and would like to learn more. I just hope it's not 'let's laugh at a minority group who have differing values to our own' type divisive crap that serves only to polarise our already fragmented society even further...

I spose you could do a fly on the wall doc about the lives of yer average STWers, but by Christ it would be boring. Can you imagine? Cheeze....

I think you click on my name. It takes you to a page called 'The Southern Yeti's Forum Activity', that's pretty much it.

I'll be watching. I thought the last one was actually pretty good and made me appreciate that actually they have some very moral, upstanding and traditional values.

It was a bit pointy and laughy though IMO.

And this one tonight will be too.

As long as there's a journey, I'll be watching.

It was indeed a really interesting documentary. It'llbe intersting to see if the series keeps that up

And the 'women in hot pants' quota was higher than a vintage 70's edition of Top of the Pops. Which isn't necessarily what you'd expect from a program focusing exclusively on weddings

dd - I only wish that they could combine it with Stock Car Racing.

My Big Fat Gypsy Stock Car Wedding Race. That'd be TV gold right there.

From my brief encounters with weddings and all they involve (which has only been in the last few weeks!!) I'd say that most 'big' weddings are a vile circus, be it gypsy or not? I've tried on much worse/gopping dresses in the last few weeks than some of the gypsy girls wear but they are white so its ok???!!! Was nice to see young couples willing to devote themselves at such a young age, they do seem more monogomous(sp?) than most young people. ..... stop being so judgey you miserable lot!

Edit: should have read the posts properly, i take back that you are judgey 🙂 I thought the original documentary was awesome

I said it last time we did this topic, so I'll say it again...

The women are, generally, very feminine looking, not the way they dress but bone structure an' that. The blokes, more often than not, look like they've been smacked in the face with a spade.

According to the interview on Front Row (Radio 4), the original documentary was very well received by the Gypsy community as a whole and that's why the programme makers were allowed greater access to film this follow up.

Well just to complete the circle I could be potentially working on a documentary about Brazil and the UK (and maybe narrating too) which could well be shown back in the UK so you can all critique that one!

Ooh, can I be in your documentary? As a symbol of 'the scum that are destroying the very fabric of British Society'?

PLEEEEEEAAASEE??????

Actually, I saw a docu about penthouse dwellers in Rio the other day. Was quite interesting.

But yeah - we digress from the Channel 4 stuff.

Maybe the HMRC should be in attendance and ask where the money/earnings came from to pay for the wedding and for proof of self assessment submittal?

Great to romantise someones way of life but lets see everyone pay their way, after all 'we all should tighten our belts hey'?

never saw the original documnentary but the young so in love couple who married for life split up about 6 months later...

I saw the advert and saw the bit about evictions, wonder if theyll go into the cigarette smuggling, the dangerous sofa importing or even the fact that some of them are actually tenants in council houses in wolverhampton... (on paper!), knowing people that live near to the largest unauthorised camp in the UK (billericay) its pretty much hell a lot of the time...

I remember the original documentary.

The enormous dresses the brides wear can weigh up to 30 stone - almost 200kg. Most brides end up with scarred hips from bearing the weight.

It was interesting - if not fantastic in the real sense of the word.

Who is taking the piss though?
There are sections of all society that act dubiously.

Theres the recent talk of ****stani 'gangs' involved in paedophilia and shock at the 'accusing the whole ****stani community'.

Funny, I distinctly remember the disregard and disrespect shown to white girls by ****stani males growing up in Huddersfield along with the threats and abuse metered out to Asian girls if they were seen (or believed to have been with) white guys.

Of course there are Romany gypseys and there are travellers. The latter left a right mess when they broke into a gated site near our work once, piling huge debris/pallets/waste etc before they left and moved on.

Does that visual observation make me a racist? 🙂

And of course, there are many different kinds of 'travellers'. From very different backgrounds and cultures, too.

Does that visual observation make me a racist?

No, just silly, Hora. But then we already knew that, in fact it's why we love you so much. 🙂

Whilst you wouldn't be averse to festooning them with creme de homme, you'd be reluctant to take them to the regimental ball.

😀 So would now be a good time to point out that most of these girls are jailbait?
(Marriage at 16/17 is the norm apparently)

Not only are you all racialists, but you're also filthy perverts. 🙂

Now it's that kind of comment that I find far more offensive than the concept of the A&A thread. Insulting, derogatory and un-neccessary.

there are Romany gypseys and there are travellers

That's a really important distinction, Romany gypsies are an ethic minority, and will be classed as such in the next census. I used to work on official, council run, permanent gypsy sites and through that job met a lot of lovely people. They do all think about marriage from a very early age, one girl who was about 10 had her eye on a bespoke wedding dressmaker already, and was encouraged by her parents in this, but that's just different culture. The Romany's I met were always horrified by the actions of so called "travellers" as described above.

dd: aye, just saying like: The gypsy community was happy with it.

Doesn't mean it wasn't "pointy and laughy". But they liked it, so either it wasn't pointy and laughy in a bad way, or the gypsy community are refreshingly happy about people laughing at them.

the Jizz Police?

There's a Viz strip waiting to happen, if ever there was one

It reminds me of a scene from Lead Balloon:

Dry Cleaner: One dress ready, all semen stains have been removed!
Rick: You what?
Dry Cleaner: The semen. Your wife said you put semen on it. It's all gone.
(Pause)
Rick: Cinnamon! It was cinnamon from a cappuccino.
Dry Cleaner: It's the same thing.
Rick: It's not, there's a crucial difference!

Whilst not necessarily agreeing with the sentiments expressed in 'The girls bring to mind...', that is an unusually well constructed and witty aphorism.

I couldn't agree more. But then bravohotel9er is a right-wing Tory son of a Brigadier, so highly offensive bigotry and sneering contempt can only be expected. There was a time when the likes of bravohotel9er saw giving a peasant a damn good thrashing and raping their daughters as a birthright.

I guess that sometimes when he's on STW, he simply forgets that he is not in the company of his undoubtedly equally obnoxious pals.

Very detailed knowledge of indie music, mind. I don't know why that seems a strange combination.... but it does.

As to the comment, I think he was trying to push some buttons - a bit dull, really.

Oh here we go

No but it's true, Binners. People generally know it's 'unacceptable' to make derogatory comments about Black or Asian people, for example, but don't receive the same kind of censure when they do the same about 'Pikeys' or 'Gypos' etc, so think it's ok.

To me, someone doing so probbly also has prejudiced views on other groups, but lacks the courage to actually voice them.

I mean, BH9er would never go up to the people he seems to think he is vastly superior to, and say such things to their faces, but assumes it's ok to do so from behind the safety of a keyboard. Just cowardly really.

I really hoped this wouldn't descend into nastiness and xenophobia, but then maybe I was expecting too much. Hey ho.

(Sighs)

There's proper black humour (not restricted to the Army - it's invaluable in any hospital emergency dept) which is worth its weight in gold in a bad situation... and there's a kind of Flashman-lite officer cadet goonspeak that is just, well, boring.

BH9r: you can do better than that, son (as per other record shop thread, I am older than you...). 😈 😉

I think it's great, it takes all sorts to make the world go round. Very different culture, don't see it as harmful in the same way Asian weddings are culturally diverse to mine. Some comments made that well if directed at black asian or disabled people would get flamed then mod banned. Funny reflection on what's acceptable!!

Bainbridge...... Is it not more open than say an arranged marriage.......how many young girls disappear to marry for a passport but you won't touch it with a barge pole due to skin colour!! I agree that the kidnap thing is not on however the repercussions for the chap over stepping the Mark will be severe.

On no account us any violence sexual or physical acceptable to another person acceptable fella unless safe words are used!!!!! Again would this be challenged if they were not White I really doubt it! Happy days eh what tyres for a wedding?

Watched this and it sure was full of OMG.

Which got me to wondering why?

Culturally, the romany / travelling (insert term of choice, I'm not getting into that side of things) community is quite different from your average middle class suburbanite. And that's not meant in a bad way. They could teach some of us a few things about morals for example - what are rates of teenage* pregnancy among their community for example?

* teenage and out of marriage; I realise there is a different typical age to get married and start families

And part of their culture is having these lavish wedding / communion dresses; their courtship rituals (admittedly was getting close to organised assault from some angles but have you ever seen a hen night), and so on.

When we see an Indian wedding that can go on for days, with everyone in lavish finery, all dancing, singing, eating, that's full of OMG too. So why is one OMG good and one 'bad' and the only conclusion I can come to is because the travelling community is visually very similar to ours so we expect them to behave like us.
