Oh here we go

No but it's true, Binners. People generally know it's 'unacceptable' to make derogatory comments about Black or Asian people, for example, but don't receive the same kind of censure when they do the same about 'Pikeys' or 'Gypos' etc, so think it's ok.

To me, someone doing so probbly also has prejudiced views on other groups, but lacks the courage to actually voice them.

I mean, BH9er would never go up to the people he seems to think he is vastly superior to, and say such things to their faces, but assumes it's ok to do so from behind the safety of a keyboard. Just cowardly really.

I really hoped this wouldn't descend into nastiness and xenophobia, but then maybe I was expecting too much. Hey ho.

(Sighs)

As to the comment, I think he was trying to push some buttons

Well I think it might have worked. Judging by the fact that the entire post has mysteriously disappeared, I'm guessing that someone hit the report button.

He appears to have mysteriously disappeared too.

That's what I was referring too really Fred.

The crushing inevitability of the descent into a slanging match

There's proper black humour (not restricted to the Army - it's invaluable in any hospital emergency dept) which is worth its weight in gold in a bad situation... and there's a kind of Flashman-lite officer cadet goonspeak that is just, well, boring.

BH9r: you can do better than that, son (as per other record shop thread, I am older than you...). ๐Ÿ˜ˆ ๐Ÿ˜‰

I got accused of being overly PC a few months back for calling them the "travelling community". Not for telling somebody else to call them that mind, just for using the phrase myself. Imagine that.

Well I must say it's opened my eyes a bit, I have only ever had dealings with male 'travellers', never even knew the had any morals. But then I suppose that is the demeaner that they want to express.

Nice - those bridesmaids up the top there have had their dresses styled after that Klein adroit paintjob of the early 90s.

I think it's great, it takes all sorts to make the world go round. Very different culture, don't see it as harmful in the same way Asian weddings are culturally diverse to mine. Some comments made that well if directed at black asian or disabled people would get flamed then mod banned. Funny reflection on what's acceptable!!

Wookster - it isn't great. It's backwards. One rule for men, and sexual abuse for the women - great!

Bainbridge...... Is it not more open than say an arranged marriage.......how many young girls disappear to marry for a passport but you won't touch it with a barge pole due to skin colour!! I agree that the kidnap thing is not on however the repercussions for the chap over stepping the Mark will be severe.

On no account us any violence sexual or physical acceptable to another person acceptable fella unless safe words are used!!!!! Again would this be challenged if they were not White I really doubt it! Happy days eh what tyres for a wedding?

Watched this and it sure was full of OMG.

Which got me to wondering why?

Culturally, the romany / travelling (insert term of choice, I'm not getting into that side of things) community is quite different from your average middle class suburbanite. And that's not meant in a bad way. They could teach some of us a few things about morals for example - what are rates of teenage* pregnancy among their community for example?

* teenage and out of marriage; I realise there is a different typical age to get married and start families

And part of their culture is having these lavish wedding / communion dresses; their courtship rituals (admittedly was getting close to organised assault from some angles but have you ever seen a hen night), and so on.

When we see an Indian wedding that can go on for days, with everyone in lavish finery, all dancing, singing, eating, that's full of OMG too. So why is one OMG good and one 'bad' and the only conclusion I can come to is because the travelling community is visually very similar to ours so we expect them to behave like us.

They went on a hen night to Lanza grotty, an if she'd been ****ting around on my pool table like she was, she'd have been out along with her mates!

Morals? What morals? All I can see is a community blocking their females from experiencing the outside world then marrying them off as soon as they hit legal age.

I see absolutely no morals present at all. Its all about restriction, obscuring and suppressing. 'Keep your wimin under lock and key'.

If there were morals they would apply to dress standards and both sexes.

You see a few communities (I wont call them cultures) practicing this. Its an oppressive male/chauvinistic way of thinking.

Jesus-I'm going to get raped on my hen night???? Is that allowed? Pretty sure it isn't but I don't want to go now just in case it is. I was going canoeing an everything ๐Ÿ™

Pretty awful programme I thought, the first one changed my perception a bit more positively but last night put it right back to believing that gypsies/travellers are quite an arrogant and dangerous bunch. Not nice, I somehow doubt they'll be quite so fond of this series.

Have to say I watched it and found it all very interesting.

What came across to me was that there were some very strict, and ultimately respected rules within the Gypsy community regarding how a Woman should carry herself

- Never go out alone
- Don't get the reputation of a tramp
- No alcohol before marriage
- No sex before marriage

All pretty good characteristics for a young woman to have.

But then there was this completely contradictory side where they dressed like whores, danced provacatively and thought of themselves as possessions to be selected by the male chauvenistic (spl) men.

Some mind boggling contradictory values.

Flame me but looking through the net curtains of the 9-kid house it looks like a council house estate.

Their fella must be working really hard in his fulltime PAYE job to feed 11 mouths huh.

What Hora said.

I was fascinated by the programme but

Some mind boggling contradictory values
is putting it mildly!! Weird - not quite sure what to make of it all, but the way they treat their women is frankly a disgrace IMO in this country in this century. Maybe Taliban can get away with treating women like that (kept under control, married off, no or minimal education, treated as a possession etc) but whatever plus points their "morality" had is more than offset by their appalling attitude to women.

People generally know it's 'unacceptable' to make derogatory comments about Black or Asian people, for example, but don't receive the same kind of censure when they do the same about 'Pikeys' or 'Gypos' etc, so think it's ok.

I have no issue with different races or alternative lifestyles so long as they don't particularly interfere with me. That said, I don't support all these lifestyles/religions - personally I can't abide any form of organised religion, despise heavy drug users, and have a particular loathing of racists. But people are entitled to their views/lifestyles, no matter how deluded or repugnant I find them.

I also have a big problem with ...what shall we call them? Travellers? Pikeys? Squatters?

The people I'm seeking to describe are the itinerant travellers, a great example of whom are the ones who moved in on some undeveloped land next to my office, and then created merry hell. Thefts, noise, property damage all occurred. I witnessed one such incident, and saw the results of several more. It took three weeks to get them moved on, and several thousand pounds were spent on the clean up. I've seen many such examples over the years (though none at such close hand) and have yet to hear of a positive case where these squatters caused no damage, left immediately when asked, and were polite to the people whose land/buildings they had occupied.

The key here is that I'm criticising people not for their heritage or beliefs, but for their actions. It's those people I'd call pikeys; if there's a more appropriate term, I'm all ears.

I watched it with my Mrs. The immediate comment from her was how on earth can they afford that? Which I have to say was a fair point. Did you actually catch how much some of those dresses cost? That apart, it was interesting how many parallels there were with some Indian sub continent cultures. ie. Fellas can shag anything that moves, get falling down drunk, beat their women, generally treat them like dirt, girls must look girly, remain celibate, do as they are told and not drink.

I am obviously aware that it was a snapshot, and quite possibly not indicative of a culture generally. However, what I saw had little to recommend it, and frankly just demonstrated a way of life that has had its time and really ought to be consigned to history books along with workhouses, pressganging and little boys being sent up chimneys.

Well frankly, I've been meaning to put my foot down about this for quite some time. STOP WEARING HOT PANTS. How many times? You haven't got the legs for them. You'll still be able to get away with the crop tops if you stop wearing the ornate jewelery in your naval. It just gets covered in fluff. Its disgusting

Which kind of shows just how little you and your missus actually know about other cultures....
