My back garden is Paving Blocks and i want to take them up and lay astroturf (i'll never get grass to grow before anyone asks! 🙂

I know it probably depends on type/condition but in general are they worth anything to anyone, even for free?

Before i pay someone to take them away!

Cheers

Worth a try getting someone to pick up for free, in my experience people will do a lot for free stuff. Have had both ways, found someone willing to take up a load of concrete slabs on our drive for free (less than an hour on gumtree) then replaced with some decorative paving I took up for someone else for free (found on Facebook market place and apparently could have had several people take them)

Thanks! I forgot about marketplace.

I really want them gone quickish once they are up as a bit short of space which is why i'm trying to workout if they would be appealing to anyone or just pay to get them gone.

i guess i could add them on FB with a pic before i lift them

Some groundworks companies will let you get rid of them at their yard for free. They'll crush them for aggregate

To save all the groundworks and disposal, you could glue some 20mm foam underlay directly on top of the paving, then glue the artificial grass on top of that.

We did that for a small, tatty, lightless paved area down the side of our house. Works really well with the nicely cushioned underlay and artificial grass being a soft area for the kid to play.

Much easier than digging out and starting afresh.

Thanks peekay

what state was the paving in?

mine had a crappy job done on it and its pretty undualting, worried the underlay option won't come up flat.

Get them on Facebook marketplace. I listed 100 slabs on market place this morning for sale 50p each. Got someone collecting the lot tomorrow. Saves me getting rid of them and pays for a takeaway

My mate just lifted a neighbours monoblock drive for free. Company installing the new drive were going to charge £800 to remove and dispose of, my mate was about to buy monoblock, win win and nothing wasted.

@pat12

It was a crazy paving type space, undulating a little. Only 2.5m x 4m.

I used some really loose mortar to fill in big cracks between paving, and areas where water sat so that most of it fell to the aco/ slot drain that ran alongside.

Once dried I gave it a really good clean to get rid of loose material or dust to help the adhesive adhere.

Used this underlay cut to size and taped together:

And this adhesive to stick the underlay to the paving, and artificial grass to the underlay:

Fortunately I was able to get a piece of artificial grass large enough that I did not need to make any joins, but there are plenty of guides and videos explaining how you can do neatly.

Really pleased with the result, it was significantly less effort than digging up paving, making good the ground and re laying a sand base. It also means that if we decide that we no longer need the softer play area we can just remove the green stuff and go back to paving.
