I've been given a pampas grass for free. I'd like to plant it in the front garden, but will I be judged and receive offers?

Do it - you can always turn the offers down. I think the couple offering you the pampas grass are already staking a claim though......

(is this still an active thing, or do you now put an image of pampas grass on your Facebook profile?)

Might be worth planting in a pot as doesn't this stuff spread ? - give it a few years and you'll be advertising like the red light district.

It's all done through apps nowadays - crack on and plant.

Only old duffers like us will know the true meaning! 🙂

I’ve been given a pampas grass for free.

By whom?
Do they own a hot tub?
Do they host parties on occasion?
Have they flirted with you and any significant other?

We have pampas grass in our front garden.

1) Never had any offers.

2) It's an absolute PITA to maintain unless you want it to become a tree sized feature. You need to chop it down to almost ground level, and then dig out 2/3 of the plant every so often. Otherwise the new growth grows out of the ever growing rotting ball of old growth in the middle. Ours is currently about a 2ft ball (that's not the 'grass', just the dead stalky bits, if left alone for another 6 moths it'll be 3m high again), and cutting it back any further requires getting the chainsaw out and trashing the chain.

The builder is going to rip it out with a digger this week whilst he's here doing the patio. If anyone want's a half ton pampas grass plant then drop me a message.

That's quite a change in lifestyle, from pampas to patio....

I’ve got a decorative grass of some sort in the back garden on a narrow patch between my patio and the dividing wall of next door. I’m constantly finding little plants growing between the paving slabs and in various pots. I’ve found the easiest way to get those out is with a pair of pliers, they let you get a good grip on the bottom of the leaves and then just pull. I hacked the outer leaves right back last winter, I’ll give it a really good trim later this year. I didn’t plant it, it’s one of Jo’s additions in her patch of the garden, so I’m keen to keep it growing, for obvious reasons, in the same way that I plant up loads of petunias each year now - I’ve got a really good show of them this year, which I’m particularly happy about.

Isn't it all about upside down pineapples nowadays?

Edit: didn't see MCTD's post above.

We have pampas grass in our front garden, never had any offers. From time to time the local yoof amuse themselves by cathching it on fire, seems to restrict its growth to a manageable size.

The easiest way to get it back down to size is to set fire to it, which is what happens in the wild. Obv. Might be fround upon these days and need to be careful if it is close to anything and / or windy.

You could have a little dance around the flaming pampas. Maybe naked with some ‘friends’?

Trouble is, there's this central beach ball sized mass of permenantly wet rotting pampas, it doesn't burn.

Horrific things. We had one at our old house, it's untameable and the leaves are like razors. Also no swinging opportunities actually presented themselves.
