Last night nearing home and there's a red light at a pedestrian crossing. I slow right down to let the three people cross the road. Traffic stopped on my right.
Three people walk out of my way, so I speed up to cross the red light. No accident, no problem, everything ticketyboo.
Getting to the next (junction) lights at the top of the hill, car pulls up alongside. Window down.
Offended blokey - "You know that was a red light you just went through?"
Me - looked at him. Rolled my eyes. Turned away shaking my head, waiting for the light to change.
He - screaming - "Don't look at me like that you c**t!!!"
Lights changed and as I cycle off, he continues to scream - "Highway code! Highway code!"
I laughed.
Didn't have the heart to tell him he'd stopped at the lights beyond the stop line, the naughty little TinTin lookalike. ๐
(I live in Surrey).
But it was a red light.
timing's too obvious, woppers. should've waited an hour or two
29er?
Yawn. Would it be too much to ask for a bit of original thinking in your trolling?
I got shouted at by a car driver for going thru a rad light. I was alongside the car when we both went thru a bit late.
going thru a rad light
for not doing an x-up, fakey or tail whip?
Very obvious troll, are you too hot in your Christmas jumper.
Personally I'd have ridden through the group of peds crossing the road, if you're going to break the rules then at least make a bit of an effort.
I jumped a red light the other day causing a car on the junction 50 yards ahead to broadside me as they had not been expecting any traffic..
I am now a paraplegic and the driver has got a nervous breakdown for Christmas
1/10 and that's being generous because Christmas is coming.
Yunki gets it, troll or not it's one of the most dick-ish things us cyclists can do on the road and we all know how much it winds drivers up, if we want equal treatment and acceptance on the road abide by the rules and don't run red lights...when cars do it I think "what a prick" and it's no different a thought process when I see a cyclist do it.
report him for racism
I don't get it?
deviant - Memberwhen cars do it I think "what a prick" and it's no different a thought process when I see a cyclist do it.
What about when pedestrians do it ? They're always jumping lights - they just can't be bothered to wait.
traffic lights are just for cars aren't they?
traffic lights are just for cars aren't they?
Well fair's fair. Cars ignore speed limits while bike ignore red lights. No great harm caused by either if done with a bit of care.

Or even no harm at all.
Yunki gets it,
No, that's completely different. Riding into oncoming traffic is dangerous, red light or no red light. Riding into a deserted road is safe, red light or no red light.
I stop at red lights because usually it's a good idea, because I'm never in that much of a hurry that I'm bothered about 30 seconds, because I'm riding partly for fitness anyway and more stopping is more accelerating. I stop because almost everybody else does. Most importantly, I stop because if some driver cuts me up or left hooks me, I don't want his defence to be "You rode through a red light".

Going through a red does mean that you have a few seconds of pleasant cycling before the baying mob descends on you.
Naaaaah.. you misunderstand me Ned... I didn't mention anything about oncoming traffic!!
What I'm saying is that traffic lights don't just effect you and others at the lights.. There may be junctions or driveways, or peds, or sidestreets that although not directly governed by the lights, use them to gauge traffic..
There are a small number of situations where it may be 'perfectly safe' to ignore the traffic lights but those situations are a small minority
On my ride home from town there are a number of light controlled crossings that are for bikes and pedestrians. I can't decide if red light jumping on them is an offence as it's fine to ride your bike on them when the red light is showing if you start from the pavement.
I'm always safe when I go out cycling at night on roads. I always make sure I look behind me for coppers before charging through a red light into a deserted road. ๐ก
You'd have been safely through the lights on a chipped e bike.
What I'm saying is that traffic lights don't just effect you and others at the lights.
Tricky to understand that's what you were saying in your first post. Clearer now.
I didn't mention anything about oncoming traffic!!
"traffic" then.
But if the traffic's not moving towards one, one's not going to be hit by it, is one? I'll give you the first definition, but it's rather outweighed by all the others.
oncoming
adjective
1.
approaching from the front; moving towards one.
"she walked into the path of an oncoming car"
synonyms: approaching, advancing, coming, nearing, arriving, onrushing;
Quoting from the dictionary! Now we're off! ๐
Yeah... sure
[quote- "Don't look at me like that you c**t!!!"
He made a valid point what's your problem?
if we want equal treatment and acceptance on the road abide by the rules and don't run red lights
This is how I feel about it also
There are two junctions I use regularly where it is obviously safer to go thru on red. In one you are dumped from a cycleway into cars who have set off on green who immediately want to change lanes across where you are and parked cars block your way. The other there is a pinch point maybe 50 yards after the lights then I want to turn right. ON both you can clearly see if any cars are coming. Go 30 seconds before the green you can make your manoeuvre safely and get past the pinch points before the cars get there.
I know its wrong legally, I know it winds folk up however my safety comes first and going thru on red 30 seconds before the green makes me safer
I know its wrong legally, I know it winds folk up however my safety comes first and going thru on red 30 seconds before the green makes me safer
And by doing this TJ you're giving us all a bad name. So it's okay for you to tell others not to speed but if you want to run a red light when it suits you then that's okay?
I agree!
Me too, I'm afraid.
If it's too dangerous to ride through a junction on green, just get off and walk.
Enough people as it is think they can do what they like on the roads.
When driving and get stopped at lights I just turn the engine off and push it through, start up again on the other side. Easy.
I go thru red light when its safer for me to do so. NOt for convenience or speed. IN both these cases its also better for the car drivers as I am out of their way. ONe of the junctions if you go thru on green ( its a specific light for bikes) allthe car drivers accuse yo of going thru on red as its so obviuously stupid to relese the bikes at the same time as cars they think yohave gone thru on red ( they can't see the light for bikes) getting off and walking thru the junction is just daft. Break the law do it properly. anyway neither of them would getting off an walking thru actually help any.
Why should I expose myself to greater danger simply to mollify peoples prejudices?
I keep meaning to take some vids of the two junctions to show you guys
At the second one you could always cycle on green. Pull over to the left before the pinch point and either cross the road on foot or wait until nothing is coming and then move over. Not very convenient I grant you, but it isn't about your convenience is it. It is all about safety
Is that like exceeding the speed limit when you're tired because it's safer not to fall asleep at the wheel/bars? I'm just trying to find out what other traffic offences it's OK to commit.
I'm just trying to find out what other traffic offences it's OK to commit.
How about speeding so I can get home before it gets dark ?
Statistically waaay more accidents happen on the road once it gets dark, I know it's illegal, however my safety comes first and getting home before dark makes me safer. (Even more so, now I only have one headlight bulb working)
Where's the thumbs-up ?
Not sure. I'll have a look once I find somewhere to pull over.
Cyclists jumping red light is no big deal as the risk is theirs so do whatever they like.
As long as they are out of harms way I cannot care less even if they cycle like bats out of hell.
But are people allowed to stare if something happens? I mean stand there looking ... looking ...
I'll do some vids of both the junctions. No risk to anyone doing what I do. I'm not talking about going thru at speed when I can't see. I am talking about knowing the phases of the lights and anticipating the green by 10 or 20 seconds.
I'll film them both doing it legally and illegally
I'm just trying to find out what other traffic offences it's OK to commit.
Does exactly the same offence as TJ is committing count as an other offence if people do it in a car? Because my anecdotal evidence from witnessing it every day is that the majority of drivers are happy to commit that #givingdriversabadname
Parking is the most common one I would say. On a two mile journey up to town one day I counted 14 illegally parked vehicles. Closely followed by speeding. NOt clearing windows and lights in snow / steamed up windows is another.
It was the ranting apoplexy at something that had no deleterious effect on anything, that got me.
TJ is that Forrest Rd?
I don't find it as bad as you but I see your point.
Some months back I was beeped and shouted at for going through a red light - by a van driver who wasn't observant enough to notice I'd actually gone through on the green bicycle light that precedes the standard green light for improved safety at that junction...
When driving and get stopped at lights I just turn the engine off and push it through, start up again on the other side. Easy.
I've actually done this. On my way home I pass Twickenham rugby stadium and if they're kicking out they virtually shut a chunk of road between two sets of lights either side of a roundabout for 10 minutes at a time
I'm on the motorbike, I've filtered to the front of the waiting traffic then sat there for a while before realising I'm going nowhere.
So I killed the engine, got off and pushed the bike through the crowd, then jumped on, thumbed the starter and rode off on the totally empty road. Bliss. ๐

I hope you also get out and push when you pass every side road at the "drivers dismount" signs.
I saw a cyclist jumping a red light on the Bury - Manchester road. When I caught him up at the next light I shouted out of the window at him: "I'M A CYCLIST AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE AN EMBARRASSMENT TO THE REST OF US!"
So there.
I expect he is embarrassed at being associated with people who shout out of car windows.
