Looking for a new small tablet. After reading this...

http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/what-tablet-for-150-it-ludite-help-needed

...looks like the Sony Z3 compact is a good bet. Anything that beats it?

Has to be small, ie 8inch(ish), light, easy to carry etc.
Price is not too much of a concern.
Don't want apple as planning on unDRM things.

nVidia Shield K1 is about as good as small tablets get.

What things are you planning on "un-DRM"-ing? Purchased music isn't DRM. Hasn't been for a long while.

TFO: The K1 is impressive, but I don't plan to game on it, and she's not much of a looker ๐Ÿ˜‰

ATG: Good question, not entirely sure. Just know that I have all sorts of problems trying to do things on my iPhone (which I love as a phone), and don't want the same problems on the tablet. Perhaps DRM is the wrong phrase, just looking for something not quite is prescriptive as iOS. But I'll offer up ripped DVDs as an example.

Fair enough. Just wondered. (but on the ripped DVD example, just rip the DVD as normal, using Handbrake etc then drop the mp4 onto iTunes and let it sync to the iPhone. I hate to say this but it really does just work)

No there isn't. Not as an all rounder imo. The battery life still amazes me-the thing just never runs out (note to pendants-ok it does run out eventually but it takes a bloody age!).

Z3 Compact Tablet is my favourite tech gadget purchase ever. Sony did a really good job on that device. And as a bonus it works really well for OS maps in the pishing rain (usefull in Scotland a lot) ๐Ÿ™‚

Cougar, why the K1 over the Z3?

Xora, good praise!

I have a z3. Great little thing. Only dislike is the charging port has a cover over it and with the case I have its a pain to open. Perhaps more a problem with the case than the z3.

Yes but the flap is there due to another big selling point. The thing is waterproof.

Bear in mind it's a 2014 tablet so non-covered waterproof ports weren't a thing.

I hadn't looked at the Z3 (I didn't know it existed TBH). My experience of Sony Android phones - which may be long out of date and inaccurate now - is that they have a proprietary home screen / interface and are very slow to push Android updates, so I'm not interested until someone tells me that's no longer the case. (I know XDA dodges a lot of this, but still.)

The K1 is pitched as a gaming platform. Whilst I'm not (yet, heh) a massive tablet gamer, I figured such a device would have sufficient horsepower to cope with anything else I threw at it.

@cougar-i don't notice any lag with the UI and in any event something like Nova Launcher sorts that particular niggle out if it does occur.
