MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Is this going to be the shortest thread in STW history?
For me I think Larry Graham just wins it, but he's closly followed by:
Familyman Barrett
James Jamerson
Geezer Butler
Willie Weeks
Jaco Pastorius
Lemmy
End of
More attitude than you could shake a stick at, even now as a 60-odd yr old.
Or Gene Simmons.
Or Nick Beggs 😉

To hell with "What would Jesus do?", "What would Lemmy do?"
Patron saint of bass players, isn't he?
Patron saint of bass players, isn't he?
no, because technically he's not a very good bassist, although I love motorhead 😀
John Entwistle The Who
Tony Reeves Greenslade
Geezer Butler, or John Myung (sp?)
Geddy Lee FTW
flea
Flea... I've never seen someone bouncing about so much while still being able to play like a loon... fantastic..
Leigh Gorman, JJ Burnell, Bruce Foxton
Lemmy he plays bar chords on a bass 🙂
Algy Ward for the intro to Love Song
Dee Dee Ramone
Must be Jack Bruce or Larry Taylor

Or indeed, hanging upside down 🙂 Shame the rock shit he plays lately is so crap. Early Chilis were fab.
Mark King (level 42)
Hooky
Lemmy
Macca
Keith from Here & Now
Phil from The Subhumans
Joe Lally from Fugazi
Neil Crossley from Half Man Half Biscuit (and if you don't believe me, search for Uffington Wassail, can't link to it from here!) 😀
Les Claypool, had forgotten all about him and his 6 string bass...legend.
Oh, Jah Wobble and Steve Harris too.
Flea.
+1 John Entwistle The Who
Peter Hook, Joy Division/New Order
Steve Hanley, ex of The Fall
Mani - Stone Roses era. Melodic bass lines that complimented their songs perfectly. IMO
Andy Rourke - The Smiths, same as above.
mani
Lemmy
there is more to being the best bassist than being able to play the best
+2 Peter Hook
Paul McCartney
Flea
Mark King
My dad 😉
Gotta be - Geddy Lee
Flea
Gene Simmons for a show!!
lemmy or nikki sixx from motley crue...
Mark King?? Surely your favourite bassist has to play decent music, not just be technically proficient?!
I like some early Level 42 stuff.
Holger Czukay
Gene Simmons for a show!!
Yeah - saw them last month and he is still doing the dripping blood bass solo routine - utterly naff but utterly entertaining.
+1 for Les Claypool & Flea
Kims Deal or Gordon
Lou Barlow
Andy
I do like Geddy Lee's output. I was listening to Subdivisions just the other day - one my fav songs.
I do like Geddy Lee's output
What about the voice of Geddy Lee?
How did it get so high?
I wonder if he speaks like a ordinary guy?
Andy
norman watt-roy once of the blockheads now with wilko johnson
(and just to save time those two are my favourite lead/bass combo)
Profound Tim. Most profound.
Stu Hamm. Has to be seen to be believed.
+1 for Steve Harris also, driving force behind Maiden.
Flea (wot, again ?)
Andy Fraser
+1 for Steve Harris also, driving force behind Maiden.
He is technically proficient but he doesn't have 'it'.
this thread is now over
Without a single mention for John Paul Jones? What about [url=
Thompson?
Got to be Jack Bruce. Or Danny thompson. Or that chap with Leonard Cohen's band.
[url=
Robbie Shakespeare
Bill Laswell
alex katunich (dirk lance), flea, Timmy C, les claypool, the bassist from Adequate 7 and Kim Deal.
Jean-Jacques Burnel.
Jack Casady, Lemmy and Jamie Stewart of the Cult, mainly for this: [url=
Pino Palladino, Andy Coughlan
Good shout above - Bootsy Collins
sid vicious ??? jeez...
why has no one said Phil Lynott
and
James Jamerson
Danny Thompson, particularly when partnering Richard Thompson. totally blown away by them both a couple of years ago
Norman Watt-Roy, no question.
And @bigeyedbeans, he's still of the Blockheads, but also plays with Wilko, as does Dylan Howe, the Blockheads current drummer (and son of Steve). Norman and Dylan are pretty much the dream rhythm section - saw Wilko last Friday, and they were just unbelievably good.
Lemmy, Geezer Butler, Steve Harris
Have to add John Giblin and Percy Jones to the list
What about the voice of Geddy Lee?How did it get so high?
I wonder if he speaks like a ordinary guy?
(I know him and he does!)
Can't believe no one has mentioned Roger Glover, very underrated and still going strong

- Waiting Room
The rhythm section in that band is so ridiculously tight.
🙂
Cliff Burton - the King
Tony Arraya - the Price
Flea - the Princess
Lemmy Motorhead - the mouthy one
Jason Newsted - the best ever IMHO
Flea, Bootsy Collins, Phil Lynott, in that order. The podium at the bass olympics. FACT.
@_tom_ yes, but fugazi and minor threat accidentally gave birth to emo and for that crime alone they should be burned on pyre of girls aloud and B*witched cds.
13 songs was a great album though. 😀
Mark King.
I like all of their albums. All have great production, something which seems to have been lost with a lot of modern music 🙁
"Proper" emo is good, but things like my chemical romance are definitely shit!
a +50000 for Jason Newstead
metallica played by a proper bass player 😉
Manchester seems to just breed great bassists
1. Hooky
2. Mani
3. Andy Rourke
Mark King? FFS?!!! Get a ****ing grip!!!
Geddy Lee
Freewill etc etc etc.
jean baudin just simply a brilliant musician and an 11 string bass 😀
What about the voice of Geddy Lee?How did it get so high?
