Profound Tim. Most profound.
Stu Hamm. Has to be seen to be believed.
+1 for Steve Harris also, driving force behind Maiden.
Flea (wot, again ?)
Andy Fraser

He is technically proficient but he doesn't have 'it'.
this thread is now over
Without a single mention for John Paul Jones? What about [url=
Thompson?
Got to be Jack Bruce. Or Danny thompson. Or that chap with Leonard Cohen's band.
[url=
Robbie Shakespeare
Bill Laswell
alex katunich (dirk lance), flea, Timmy C, les claypool, the bassist from Adequate 7 and Kim Deal.
Jean-Jacques Burnel.
Jack Casady, Lemmy and Jamie Stewart of the Cult, mainly for this: [url=
Pino Palladino, Andy Coughlan
Good shout above - Bootsy Collins
sid vicious ??? jeez...
why has no one said Phil Lynott
and
James Jamerson
Danny Thompson, particularly when partnering Richard Thompson. totally blown away by them both a couple of years ago
Norman Watt-Roy, no question.
And @bigeyedbeans, he's still of the Blockheads, but also plays with Wilko, as does Dylan Howe, the Blockheads current drummer (and son of Steve). Norman and Dylan are pretty much the dream rhythm section - saw Wilko last Friday, and they were just unbelievably good.
Lemmy, Geezer Butler, Steve Harris
Have to add John Giblin and Percy Jones to the list
What about the voice of Geddy Lee?How did it get so high?
I wonder if he speaks like a ordinary guy?
(I know him and he does!)
Can't believe no one has mentioned Roger Glover, very underrated and still going strong

- Waiting Room
The rhythm section in that band is so ridiculously tight.
๐
Cliff Burton - the King
Tony Arraya - the Price
Flea - the Princess
Lemmy Motorhead - the mouthy one
Jason Newsted - the best ever IMHO
Flea, Bootsy Collins, Phil Lynott, in that order. The podium at the bass olympics. FACT.
@_tom_ yes, but fugazi and minor threat accidentally gave birth to emo and for that crime alone they should be burned on pyre of girls aloud and B*witched cds.
13 songs was a great album though. ๐
Mark King.
I like all of their albums. All have great production, something which seems to have been lost with a lot of modern music ๐
"Proper" emo is good, but things like my chemical romance are definitely shit!
a +50000 for Jason Newstead
metallica played by a proper bass player ๐
Manchester seems to just breed great bassists
1. Hooky
2. Mani
3. Andy Rourke
Mark King? FFS?!!! Get a ****ing grip!!!
Geddy Lee
Freewill etc etc etc.
jean baudin just simply a brilliant musician and an 11 string bass ๐

.....ish.
It would have gone totally past me, but it was played by Ms Laverne (or the afternoon lass) on Radio 6 Music last week. Being a tad obsessive about Rush, I looked it up then.
As a middle aged saddo, I have no idea about Pavement. They appear to be a modern beat combo.
Stuart Morrow / Jason Harris / Nelson - all New Model Army, Stuart started the style, the others had to learn it & then adapt it for themselves
JJB - big influence on Stuart Morrow
Cliff Burton (Anaesthesia for those old enough to remember) or
Robert Trujillio (Suicidal Tendencies days, Asleep at the Wheel and Send me your money being particular favourites)
Noel Redding.
Jack Bruce.
