Am I the only one who came away thinking “James Bond is dead, long live 007”, whoever he or she may be?
End of titles it said "James Bond will return", not "007 will return".
Precisely; he is a fictional character. You can do what you like with it. Which is probably what the studio will do. Ignore the last 40 years and start again with some other actor, and really no one will care once they got over it. Why You could not do that with a woman in the role?
He's a fictional character that has had the same backstory in 25 films (with different actors), and [insert big number] books with the same backstory (from several different authors). As a Bond nerd that's a character I'm invested in. I don't see why they would throw that all away just because it's time for a new actor (again).

Oh, it'll be a white middle aged man without a doubt. The Broccolis are too conservative to do anything else with the franchise. But there's no reason why you can't start with a woman, it's interesting that you think that would be "throwing it all away" what difference would that make to the legacy of the franchise?
For me, I think it would be a bad idea to cast a female actress as James Bond because, well, James Bond is an established character. However, as they did with this film, there's absolutely nothing wrong with creating other "00" agents that can be any gender and they can have their own back stories, their own style, their own vulnerabilities and their own character. They sort of did that with the Jeremy Renner "Bourne" film. Just a tad disappointing that they rode off the back of the Bourne name which felt a bit misleading but you can see what they were doing. Although, at the end of the day, these are just films / stories so not worth getting too worked up about it. 🙂
As an MI6 agent who’s cover appears to be “rich and well educated Brit with no job on a seemingly random globetrotting tour of high end hotels” and whose primary method of infiltration and information gathering is “seducing a member of the criminal organisation or their adult children
Yes, that is the character of James Bond. Bond is a man. His femaie bedding antics were tamed down in this film, in that the only woman he shagged was his girlfriend. The tables were turned on him by the women and it worked well IMO.
The character of James Bond should never be replaced by a woman. Yes , 007 can be whoever you want, be it in their own film or spin off series. But a Bond film ( and that is what they are) is about Bond, James Bond and should be something HE says in each and every film.

I don't mind 007 being a woman, but it's going to be quite some stretch for Q branch to make James Bond a woman.
I enjoyed it but 2 big questions for me are:
1) Bond and his watches have form- first thing a baddy would say is 'can you take off ze watch Mr Bond' surely?
2) As touched upon earlier how did a knackered Toyota out muscle all that brand new 4x4 technology
otherwise totally believable and my bladder lasted at 57 ( just....)

Basically this, I'm sure an expanded "Bond Universe" has crossed the Broccolis minds rather than relying on one big pay day every 5 years or so.
And why is all the "Female James Bond" nonsense popping up anyway?
Too many incell, culture war mutterings and linear thinkers seizing on the fact that some capable female characters happened to be in this particular Bond movie (there have been others before). James Bond is a character, 007 is just a number, even the film managed to make that point... Ultimately it's all fictional, it's not really that important.
As touched upon earlier how did a knackered Toyota out muscle all that brand new 4×4 technology
Did you notice how incredibly unbeat up it was afterwards 😂

Two words: James Bond.
A female bond doesn’t work for me due to the history of bond, so a commander who’s been in special forces and so on. You’d have to change it all, so why bother with the franchise?
Not a slight against women doing this stuff, but they have to fit into the world they create, so bourne could do it, John wick could do it, as can many others, but it has to fit, otherwise it just puts off both sets of fans it’s trying to bring into the theatre
I saw it last night, and enjoyed it. I did half expect that Madeleine would be killed during the first DB5 sequence with the OHMSS music was playing. As ever suspension of disbelief was required to avoid massive plotholes, many of which have already been discussed, but overall a thumbs up from me
I think they will go down the hard reboot route, James Bond will return, all cast will be different, nobody will remember anything etc etc. JB will be 15 - 20 years younger again and off we go on a new set of adventures.
otherwise totally believable
It really wasn't .
Enjoyed the film but the end was bollox. James Bond 007 is the character from a 1960’s book simple as that, it seemed to me the actor got bigger than the character and the studio bought into his importance, when he said he didn’t want to do any more bond movies they should have let him go. If the next one isn’t James Bond 007 I won’t bother but I assume it will be with some sort of reboot, or the explosions didn’t kill him but did jolt him enough to kill the nanobots 🤣
And I want a land cruiser, tbh if getting somewhere was a priority it would be a better choice than a new LR 👍
Watched it the other day, loved it!
Yeah the middle is a bit long and the baddy a bit weak. But the rest is pure gold. Great action, comedy, cinematography and music.
Could watch the opening half hour over and over.
👌
I can see a spin off using the female 007, but using her new 00 number (006?)
Could be good but not really Bond, I would still watch it.
I think they'll go full reboot for the proper next Bond. Maybe have the next Bond would have a back storyline around Syria or Afghanistan. Maybe go really dark with the character.

I seem to remember people saying that if you wanted to head off on an epic journey, take a Land Rover. If you wanted to get back, take a Land Cruiser.
Daniel Craig has taken ownership of the role. I hardly think of the previous actors in it now.
If I never saw another 007 movie again, because they simply finished the cycle, I wouldn't pine for new movies to come out.
I kind of felt there were many close camera shots of Craig that were there to drill his face into your memory, and the expressions he gave said it's time to say goodbye.
Awesome, what a fantastic film!

Same, I thought Nomi was great, there's a spin-off series right there.
MGM are now owned by Amazon, so there could be some expansion with the Bond 'universe', the only problem is that there really hasn't been any universe, it's Bond movies and no real offshoot movies or series.
Nomi could lead a series, or even a film, but how do you build that universe, i doubt the likes of Ralph Fiennes or Naomi Harris would sign up to a series, they're already busy enough, Ben Whishaw needs to keep himself open for another Paddington movie as well!
Unfortunately i just can't see any real world building with Bond, it's too old to change, and to be honest, any series or offshoot would only be compared and criticised.
Finally watched it this evening.
Patchy (silly) in places, but good enough. Not quite Casino Royale, but then again happily not quite Spectre.
EMP watch / nanobots plot hole a bit irritating but I guess necessary for where they were taking the story.
I'd rather they go down the 007 can be whoever route rather than a hard James Bond reboot, but suspect they won't. Probably do both?
If they go reboot, hope they give the gig to Tom Hardy but again worry they'll go a bit Moore on us with Cavill/Madden/Norton...
I liked it and i'm not the biggest bond fan . Yup it was way more far fetched than any other but the locations were amazing and great to see the Cairngorms doubling as Norway in the land rover getting owned by an auld toyota scene.
Daniel Craig has been good , hopefully Tom hardy or Sam Heughan next. Anyone know where the bridge was before the land rover scene. ? Also the agent in cuba was utterly smoking hot.
I watched it at the weekend - for full disclosure, I would classify myself as a bond "fan".
I enjoyed it - it's a good film. It obviously requires the usual suspension of logic that Bond films do, but not in a way I found jarring - the virus vs nanobots thing was quite obvious. Plot was good, script was pretty good, performances were good. Bond was a lot more human in this installment - he was less cool, calm and collected, and spent longer being confused/surprised. No bad thing, just different.
I think I probably agree with most of the criticism on here - didn't find Rami Malek's baddie particularly terrifying and thought it was a shame that in 2.5 hrs we couldn't have had a bit more of him.
Thought Ana De Armas's character (Paloma? I think) was excellent - am hoping that she appears in future films as Felix Leiter's replacement. I feel a bit sad that they killed off the felix character, as he's been a fixture throughout and it didn't seem to be required by the plot at all. I suppose he had previously been half eaten by a shark in one of Dalton's films/books - so it doesn't really matter.
I enjoyed the film, but I'm going to reserve judgement until we see whether they go with the next one:
I think they will go down the hard reboot route, James Bond will return, all cast will be different, nobody will remember anything etc etc. JB will be 15 – 20 years younger again and off we go on a new set of adventures.
This is my guess too. It's notable that (with the exception of one throwaway line in OHMSS) Craig's bond series is the only one where there are plots/links between films - and I wonder how much of what has been covered in the last few films will endure, if anything.
I think James Bond having a daughter is very interesting - aren't there a bunch of Young Bond books? *googles* yes, yes there are. Could be kind of interesting, and would maybe open the door to a female James-Bond type character without upsetting a load of middle aged men.
I've always subscribed to the "James Bond is a codename" theory - even after skyfall/spectre p*ssed all over it. And unless they are going to do some kind of retro-infill movies, they have essentially just confirmed that this is indeed the case ("James Bond Will return").
I don't think the new bond should be a woman - mostly because it will give creedence to some peoples fears that in order for women to get better/stronger parts in Hollywood, then they have to "take" them from men, and that fans of the traditional bond will somehow be losing something as a result of the onward march of feminism/wokeism. Just to be clear - I don't feel like that, but if they arbitrarily replaced Bond with a woman, then they would kind-of have a point.
I hope it's Cavill next..... the man from Uncle was the best Bond audition anyone could ever do, and I see him as really the only one after Craig who could pull-off the combination of action/physicality and comedy/charm of the bond character. Otherwise my money would be on James Norton or Richard Madden - both of which feel a bit Meh.... and more "spooks" than Bond.
In the world of Bond nerdism, these two statements are considered incompatible;
I would classify myself as a bond “fan”.
I’ve always subscribed to the “James Bond is a codename” theory
TBH if you're coming up with theories about JB then you're way overthinking it. He's the worlds' most secret agent but is too pimp to want or even need to hide his identity. 😃
My thought process involved: hearing the theory, thinking “hmmm, yes that seems to fit…. ish”, and then going about my day.
Anyone know where the bridge was before the land rover scene. ?
The Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway, I think?
I enjoyed it .
he's pushing 40 , probably too old by the time they start filming the next movie.
Daniel Craig was 38 in Casino Royale
I enjoyed it and was grinning so much in the first part where they had the chase and car gadgets etc.
I was confused as to why the EMP watch blew up mateys eye but didn't kill the radio earpiece he had in...
I think it will be hard to top DC's bond either way.
Apparently it'll be out to stream with Amazon and Sky from the 19th - ideal for those that don't want to sit in the cinema for all that time!
We'll be watching it at home over the next week or so I think, we both enjoyed the last couple but probably wouldn't make the effort to get to the cinema to see it.
I hope it’s Cavill next
My money's on Tom Hardy
Out on stream services to rent today. Disappointing no UHD stream on amazon prime UK.
I'd rather not Tom Hardy, I don't think he's that good an actor and I'd much prefer it to be an unknown, or less high profile, actor because the films are big enough to carry it. That way you can give it to someone who can act and give it their own identity.
Disappointing no UHD stream on amazon prime UK.
Jokers.
Available in UHD, Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos on Apple TV (for the same price as Amazon)
Won't be Tom Hardy (or Henry Cavill). Too old and too well known, EON will want someone they can have more control over than an established name like that. With any luck to bang out a film every two years for a bit - but that's probably over ambitious!
I'd also recommended this podcast;
https://play.acast.com/s/smershpod
It's brill at all times, and very much a comedy podcast rather than a serious film one, but the presenter knows his Bond chops and the guest for the No Time to Die episode is a writer from Empire. They had a lot of interesting things to say.
Jokers.

yeah, I keep thinking about getting an apple tv box (no app on my panasonic oled and firestick apple tv app maxes out at HD for some reason). Maybe the perfect excuse.
Finally just watched it. A bit dusty here
Finally just watched it. A bit dusty here
For all its faults, it's quite moving. (Are we still avoiding spoilers?)
We have to...the Bladerunner thread got amended to mention it had spoilers despite it being a 40 year old film...
I avoided this thread and anything else so went into the film completely fresh, didn't even watch a trailor.
Loved it. Very dusty. Even my son who laughed at his mum and I for crying when Goose died when we watch top gun the other week was blubbing! He does love bond though.
DC has been the greatest bond. Reboots or spin offs later, whatever being them on. A female 00 is fine, give her a proper back story and go for it.
James Bond though is a man, don't care what colour he is, but he is a man.
Great film though. Flawed yep, but it's Bond, who cares!
Finally got round to seeing it today and managed to avoid all of the spoilers.
How easy is it to flip a Land Rover?
Best thing to do with them. 🙂
Got the DVD (THAT came out quick!) and watched it again, I see Paul Edmondson done the stunt bike jumping, and my childhood hero Rob Herring got two credits, for stunt bloking and precision drivering. 🙂
How easy is it to flip a Land Rover?
I repeat - best thing for them. 🙂
