Last night, I was told that it's rude to leave a tip at any Michelin starred restaurant. If the tip isn't hundreds of euros (...?), then it isn't wanted.

I replied that a Michelin starred restaurant is still a restaurant and tipping will fall under local customs, along with the specific practice of the restaurant. Having a star or two doesn't change tipping culture.

Who's right?

What a load of rubbish. I suppose restaurants that get given stars for the first time instantly start paying their staff more so they can turn their noses up at the tips?

All that I've been to add on a service charge anyhow (usually 12% or so) - so they pretty much arrange the tipping for you

I think my michelin-starred mate would give me a hefty clip round the back of the head with his sauté pan if I didnt tip his staff.

Perhaps you could slap him until he paid them a decent wage?

Perhaps he should think about paying his staff a wage that meant they were not relying on tips....

Why do they do this....? Are they saying they are that confident that the food and service is deserving of a top that they include it already or do they have no faith in their service that they stealthily try and slip their "tip" on the bill and hope you don't notice...

I've asked them to relive a service charge before and then not left a tip... Find it rather cheeky and it pisses me off.

who said anything about them relying on tips? 🙄

I pay them tips to thank them for making an evening so enjoyable. I dont doubt that my friend pays his team very well. Not least because his wife is the gaffer 🙂

thanks folks, unanimous agreement!

I wasn't there, although the food was supposedly very good and the service was excellent.

thanks folks, unanimous agreement!

Except you said euros, so does that mean it wasn't in the UK?

If so, then different rules apply, and could be anything from 15-20% in the USA to nothing in many parts of Europe.

If the boss insist on tipping then I see him/her as ...

The restaurant has a mean boss who ...

1. Does not pay well hence waitress/waitresses survive on tips to add to their income.

2. The boss wants you to subsidies his/her waitress/waitresses while the owner keep most of the profits.

3. The owner cannot motivate staff so you chip in the monetary rewards including his boss coz now he does not have to pay more ...

4. Your hard earned money so do as you like. If you don't feel comfortable then don't go back ... simple.

😮

It's a custom I'm happy to continue with. If the service is crap, I don't tip.

Tipping really is a shit system isn't it. Here's a couple of quid for doing a decent job - you wouldn't give someone in Tesco a quid for scanning stuff, nor slip a fiver under the door to the cockpit to thank the pilot for not ****ing up and killing you, but social convention says you should tip restaurant staff because it's "how it works" and makes a poorly paid job a better paid one.

Worst tipping experience of my life? 8 of us eating in a steak place in Whistler Village, in fairness we arrived quite late and they "managed to find us a table" on a Tuesday night when it was only a 3rd full, food was great, waiter a bit full of himself but we gave a very good tip - $80 from memory - when was the last time someone gave you £40 for finding them a seat and writing down what they want for tea? He was fairly disgusted though, because we were heading home in the morning we were trying to get rid of change - so it was in a pile of $2 coins, he pretty much marched us out - my only regret was I was a bit pissed, thought he was joking and didn't take it back. We walked straight out of their into a bar where the server or whatever they're called calls us all pussys for only drinking beer and not buying trays of shooters and paying her $20 for carrying them 10 metres from the bar.

I have only been to restaurant a few times in my life in the UK so not sure what those very expensive restaurant taste like. I think the most expensive I have ever paid was around £40 ... 😆

But in the far east street foods beat the restaurant food hands down coz some street foods are so specialise they reach perfection serving limited dishes ...

Michelin starred restaurants are just like other good restaurants but have chosen to produce food (and have the skills to produce and maintain that level) that is likely to get them a star or two. There are some amazing restaurants out there that have no need or desire to earn Michelin stars. Most restaurants put a service charge on the bill which is supposedly discretionary but usually I just pay it if service is good or if there was something that wasn't quite right with service or food I'll knock it down a bit bit still leave a tip.
Done this in Michelin starred and fine dining restaurants as well as high street chains.and never had a snotty reply or derisory look for 'only' leaving 10-12%
Whoever suggested to you it was not the norm probably has never eaten in a starred restaurant.

I'm not sure why others don't see tipping as a motivating factor in providing good service. I'm happy to hear the counter argument (though the Everything Everything set is about to start which is much more important 😆 )

There was a news story about a fancy new York restaurant who banned tipping. The poblem for them was it could only go to the waiting staff, this meant the couldn't split it with the rest and led to things like good with staff not taking up other front of house promotions due to the massive pay cut. There was also some research that found that people tip the same regardless of the service. Big tippers tip big all the time, the small tippers the same. So they increased their prices by the average tip and paid all their staff more. Much simpler
