We will be in touch
I would like to try taking a few macro shots with my Canon 600d SLR. I have a 50mm 1.4 lens and a 2x converter. Will using those two together be similar to using a 100mm 2.8 macro lens?
I just want to be able to give it a try before deciding wether to splash out on a specialist lens.
Thanks in advance
No, your focusing distance will be no closer than you currently get. Extension tubes are a cheap way to get into close up photography and would still be useful if/when you get a Macro lens.
Your 50mm 1.4 will not fit on your 2x converter. Try googling poor man's macro, see some of the results here.

Macro lenses focus on things really close. Check the minimum focusing distance of both lenses.
Your 50mm 1.4 will not fit on your 2x converter.
That's news to me. Why not?
Couple of cheap options to try macro without splashing a lot of cash on a proper macro lens:
a reversing ring - basically lets you mount the 50mm backwards to make it into a macro lens
a macro filter - try x2 or x4 filter. Basically like attaching a magnifying glass to the end of the lens.
Cougar,
Sorry, I was thinking of a 2x Extender, I always call my 2x extender a converter. The results from the poor mans macro can be stunning when done correctly.
I'm not wholly sure what the difference is... (-:
Just did a bit of googling. Seems that some lenses aren't compatible because the rear element protrudes too far; also, the Jessop's own brand one states it's not compatible with EF-S lenses. Though, the 50mm 1.4 is an EF lens?
*confused*
Hold on,
I have a 50mm 1.4 lens and a 2x converter.
...
I just want to be able to give it a try
You already have the kit. What's stopping you?
True, give it a try.
