Hi
I am like, I suspect many 47 year olds I guess, fairly bike fit and pretty active with walking dinghy sailing etc as well, but really like my food, i am developing a bit of a belly which has to go, other than the expected just eat less replies, anyone got any tips on losing it?
Ta

its eat less pies, not replies.

pick what works for you, subscription to Mens Health, identify your fat burning zone, HIIT, iDiet, carb-cycling, 400 situps/day, pilates, stomach staple, food poisioning.... lots of recommendations on here for picolax.

eat less fewer?
thats gibberish.
Hmmm... I don't think anyone has asked such a question on this forum before.
Maybe I'm lazy though and can't be arsed to use the search function...
Maybe that's why I've got a belly.
Search for the iDiet threads. There is a lot of content on them despite the arguing.
In short, it's not how many calories you eat that's the issue, it's where they come from. If you change that then you can lose lots of weight easily.
Fewer carbs - cut down/out bread, rice, pasta, cereal etc. Replace with lots of beans. I've lost about 10kg in 3 months. One 'blowout day' a week allowed otherwise I'd go insane. Significant reduction in beer intake (mostly supplanted with wine) I'm sure has also helped.
😀 Thanks for ALL the replies
Sam - A blowout day is to be expected on that diet!
Fewer carbs - cut down/out bread, rice, pasta, cereal etc. Replace with lots of beans.
Beans are carbs.
That advice should be fewer high GI carbs.
Just eat cake. Ignore all the fa[s]t[/s]d dieters.
Take the pie shop off speed dial. 🙂
Seriously though 😉
I found that when I gave up some of my bad eating habits ,like late night snacking after training rides ,and choosing to eat my main meal at lunchtime,I didn't have to think about my weight at all.
I also do more core strength stuff now to fight off old age belly ,plus my son has turned me in to a climber 🙄
😆 😉I am 53 and gorgeous BTW
So in summary:
Calories in < calories out = weight loss
Eat more protein than carbs and your body builds muscle and sheds fat, and vice versa. Calories in < calories out rule still applies though.
I'm still a fat ****er though, getting better slowly! I've decided the only takeaway I'm allowed is fish+cips, and I have to ride to the coast to get it then ride back!
stop using mirrors

Really LOL and nearly choke on my sandwich.
Make some really small changes if you can.
If you take sugar in coffee/tea then use sweetners or nothing.
Do not eat any breakfast cereals, they are crap. Make sure you have porage or bacon/egg, somthing decent for your brecky.
Cut out refined foods, try and eat brown rice/bread/pasta.
Dont ever buy sweeties/chocolate. If you get some for birthday/christmas thats fine but dont go out your way to buy them.
If you are doing all that then you may need to make more drastic changes.
Good luck. i started my journey this time last year and have lost 2 stone, but still have 2 stone to loose! My focus is on getting fitter and just trying to eat good food, the weight reduction is slowly taking care of its self, but i monitor it every week to make sure im about on target.

Nah, not really, more complicatd than that 🙂
i've lost 19lb in 19weeks by eating less, molly should really understand that idave is not the only way by now.
*Edit* I have a chocolate bar everyday, in fact yesterday I had 2. Which my 15yr old son wasn't very impressed with as the second one was his 😀
Use the MyFitnessPal app for your phone. record your food intake on it and stick to the daily net calorie value. If you don't lose weight then you're cheating.
As above Calories in < calories = weight loss.

Of course I bloody well do.
Similarly, you should know that 'eating less' is pretty obvious, and doesn't necessarily work depending on where you are starting from, what you do, and what you did before.
However I am trying to say that what you eat is as important as how much, but generally accepted ideas are not necessarily the best ones.
Before I ate a lot now I eat less. use the Myfitnesspal to keep a track of calories. So I know when im being greedy.
cereal for brekkie
big ham or tuna salad for lunch
today will be mince and jacket spud for t
a Double Decker and a brew
then 2 slices of toast with jam for supper
and a couple of apples and pears through the day
the things i have cut out is milk and biscuits.
i've lost 19lb in 19weeks by eating less, molly should really understand that idave is not the only way by now.
Not the only way, but definitely the best way. I've lost 42 lbs in 16 weeks [blows raspberry] - have now reached my target weight - and am back scoffing rice, roast potatoes, chocs etc on a regular basis (in moderation of course!) and the weight is staying off.
"Eating less doesn't necessarily work? "
Are you sure about that Molly?
eat less fewer?thats gibberish.
😆
"Eating less doesn't necessarily work? "
I should have said 'eating less doesn't necessarily work very well'
And if all the wonderful forum advice fails. Try this
Eating less will definitely work, eventually, for everyone.
Everytime you say that Molly, and you've said it loads ( mostly to explain why you don't loose weight) I think of very hungry africans....

But I did not have that much to loose to start with, started @ 12st 10 now @ 11st 5 for 5ft 9
If I lost your weight I would be seriously underweight.
ps well done slim
dont think that sit-ups and other such core-work will turn your belly fat into muscle, but dont underestimate its importance in helping change the shape of your stomach area and how quickly the muscles will start to show through... in general its pretty essential to most exercises and will help with back pain if done correctly (i.e not just sit-ups, balance it out with lower back exercises also)
I think of very hungry africans....
I think of setting up a Nazi style army boot-camp.
Work sets your 6-pack free.
ride more.
Thing is I'm not actually overweight (according to my BMI i'm just Ok) its just all appearing on my stomach!
I will take on some of the glorious advice above and see if i can lose it
ride more.
Yup thats part of my plan with an occasional commute possibly
Before I ate a lot now I eat less. use the Myfitnesspal to keep a track of calories.
Same here - knowledge is power
I now know exactly how many calories I'm taking in
With 90 mins good cardio per day - I'm down 11lbs in 3 weeks, going to keep hard at it for another week to try and hit the stone, then ease back to 1lb per week
Read a copy of Gary Taubes' "Why we get fat: and what to do about it":
Linky
(It comes with with proper references to scientific studies to support his arguments)
Follow his advice.
Loose weight.
Easy.
everyone knows that people who don't eat much are far thinnner than people who eat loads.
Kev

we are all rooting for ya.

with their pot bellies?
can we ban these threads till all posters have a pic of their 6pk/gunt next to their userid, so we can all judge their 'suggestions'

Are you suggesting I am unaware of what happens when you starve?
I thought the context of my comments was fairly obvious.
I reckon she is Molly... EAT HER!

what's the point in that, everybody is different aren't they. Genetics plays a huge part.
I've always been able to see my stomach muscles. I drank about seven pints of ale on saturday follwed by several large gins and a plate of scampi and chips halfway through the day. Oh and I had bacon rolls before going out, and museli for breakfast that morning. The following day I had a full roast dinner and a chicken jalfrezi +side dishes from a curry house in town. I weigh 9 stone.
Kev
Can anyone email me the idave diet as I deleted mine but want to send it to some friends

seriously just ride more. ride so that every day you are either knackered having just ridden, or having a day off cos you are knackered from the day before.
ride hard every other day and you can eat whatever the **** you want. also it helps for insomnia, and riding faster.
IMO/IME IAHC
stop using mirrors
Yeah, mirrors can be so cruel.
I hate them too.
OP:

I can testify that that isn't true for everyone.
You lot all need to realise that what works for you won't necessarily work for everyone else.
You've got to believe in the magic or it won't come true 😀

This is very true in the context that our bodies, while all functioning in a similar manner.
Will respond to x, y, z, with noticeable degrees of variation in results.
So therefore, to realize a common result, you may need to do things to greater or lesser degrees than others do.
Things that you have noticed your body and your lifestyle responds to best.
Dont let this detract from the science, as it is explanied to us, at this point in time.
While Legspin points out the obvious about more than one way to achieve your goal (weight loss).
I have encountered very few people who seek to lose weight the most difficult way possible.
I believe most people want to achieve their goal as easily as possible.
🙂

IME weight loss/maintenance is 90% down to diet. Obviously exercise plays an important part but if you are doing it in order to burn off thousands of calories then a) you are making life much harder than you need to and b) you are at serious risk of overtraining. If you enjoy it then fair play but if you DO get injured or can't ride for any reason then you will probably find that you blow up like a balloon!
Learn to live with it, my fat guts been with me for ages now. I just can't eat less than I do now.
The rest of me is very thin, my veins are visible and sticky outy on my legs and arms. You can also see my ribs down my sides.
But my belly is mahoosive.

Me far left in green warmers, you can see the swallowed football pushing out my gilet zip
you are at serious risk of overtraining
😆 This is a bigger misconception than all the diet guff that's spouted on here.
Solo, why?
Have I hurt your delicate feelings? 😆
How many people do you know that are suffering from over-training?
OldGit.
Someone needed to tell that chap in the centre of that group picture, to, errr, smile
🙂
Thing is I'm not actually overweight (according to my BMI i'm just Ok)
A recent study found that a large number of people who were normal by BMI were actually obese by body fat percentage.
please provide clinical evidence that you are not suffering
Well that's not going to happen now is it.
I can provide anecdotal evidence that I'm never ill. That I'm mentally very sound and free from any sort of depression.
I also don't have any SSF 😉
In the zone dude in the zone.
In the zone dude in the zone.
Ah, Ok.
nuff said.
😆
Is anyone going to suggest liposuction? Worked for me, I'm on the eating phase right now and when I get to 20 stone I'll be off to the docs. Bish bash bosh, summer beach body... 😀
400 situps/day
He wants to lose the belly.
How many people do you know that are suffering from over-training?
I over did it in 2009, badly. Took 18 months or so to recover.
Compulsively masturbate 10 times a day, that should burn some fat.
just be happy with being a chubster, being at peace and happy with yourself is far more attractive(and better for your long term well being) than being a neurotic gym bunny.

Is anyone advocating that?

Again I can assure you that does not work for everyone.
Tried and failed molgrips?

pretty everyone on the tread really mr grips
that bicep toting yeti particularly 😀
whereas I'm fat and neurotic so I'm sorted 😆
I over did it in 2009, badly. Took 18 months or so to recover.
How much were you doing? How long did you take building up to that level? What actually happened?
Tazzy - I'm definitely advocating being happy with yourself, no matter how big you are, what you choose to do for fun and what you look like. Diet in particular should never be a punishment, food is way too nice.
I know TSY I'm only teasing XX 😀
Oooh you cheeky scoundrel... come here and rub my imaginary 6-pack.
Corset, it's good enough for shatner.
Oooh you cheeky scoundrel... come here and rub my imaginary 6-pack.
*flutters eyelashes, makes sure legs are shaved and hoicks beer belly into sexytime compression pants*
I'm all yours big boy
I just managed to get 5 of my 10 a day after reading that... cheers Taz.
😆 silly sod, you are awful.....but i like you
You could easily burn 6000 cal a week without overtraining. As long as you eat sensibly that is a fair bit to consume.
Easy once you are lean and fit, not so when you are 5 stone over weight. The only real way is cutting what you eat.
Corset, it's good enough for shatner.
Of corset is.
it's not how many calories you eat that's the issue, it's where they come from
*cough* bollox *cough*
This:
Calories in < calories out = weight loss
If I eat 2000 calories per day and I use 2400 calories per day for say 6 months what will happen to my weight?
If I eat 2000 calories per day and I use 2400 calories per day for say 6 months what will happen to my weight?
I reckon a 20lb - or thereabouts - weight loss would be in order
