Doesn't putting Jedi and therefore confirming you are religious when you're obviously not, just mean that the government will allocate more money to religious loonies in your area?

No religion for me.

Putting Jedi is at best pointless, and at worst counter productive.

No offence to any actual Jedis, but those who put it as a 'protest' are idiots.

Oh, and those who do actually think they are Jedis are idiots too (cancel the bit about no offence).

Dave

I was boring and stuck to the "No religion" option. Don't want to give religious types any extra help misrepresenting the stats.

All you Jedi's should listen to this:

Yesterday's Saturday Live.

Contains an interview with the leader of your church, Mr Daniel Jones, or Morda Hehol as he prefers to be known.

More about him here. and here.
Seems even the newest religions feel the need to whine about percieved
injustice 😀

Notice of Conditional Acceptance and Request for Clarification

Dear Ms. Matheson,

I write in response to the Census form received on --/03/2011.

I must admit to being a little confused, it was my understanding that the census was instigated as a simple numerical count of the population; however, the information required in this census form far exceeds this mandate.

I am happy to complete this census form subject to receipt of clarification of the following points.

1. What law requires me to complete the census?
2. From where does the Office for National Statistics derive the lawful authority to demand private information?
3. Is there a limit to invasion of privacy?
4. Is the Office for National Statistics lawfully authorised to demand Private property?
5. How can we be penalised for failure to provide information
6. Are there any circumstances whereby security agencies may access census information?
7. Since census data be requested by law enforcement, can I not answer so as to not to incriminate myself?
8. Since every government database has been hacked, leaked, lost or compromised in some fashion, how can the Office for National Statistics claim data security with any confidence?
9. Is the Office for National Statistics responsible for mishandled data?
10. What evidence do you have that I am a United Kingdom Resident?
11. Can you confirm or deny that the census data will be handled by an American Arms Manufacturer Lockheed Martin?
12. Can you confirm or deny that all U.S. companies are subject to the Patriot Act which allows the U.S. Government full access to any data in that company’s possession?
13. Can you confirm or deny that the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 section 39 subsection 4 would allow disclosure of personal information to any and/or all o the following:

• The 56 geographical and 8 non-geographical UK Police Forces.
• The three UK Intelligence Agencies (MI5, MI6 and GCHQ).
• The Department for Work and Pensions.
• Private investigators working for the Department for Work and Pensions to hunt down “benefits cheats”.
• Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs tax investigators.
• “Approved” Insurance Industry “anti-fraud” investigators / private investigators.
• The Home Office Borders and Immigration Agency.
• The Serious Organised Crime Agency (either for domestic investigations into Serious Crimes, or for these and also for minor investigations if requested by a Foreign Law Enforcement agency under Mutual Legal Assistance treaties.
• Lawyers in civil Court Cases e.g. for Divorce or Libel or Copyright Infringement etc.
• Local Authority Trading Standards departments.
• Local Authority Environmental Health departments.

Please provide your response in the form of a Statement of Truth, sworn under penalty of perjury and upon your full commercial liability within seven (7) days of receipt of this notice, I respectfully return your census form until such time as these conditions are met.

If I do not receive such a response conforming to the above criteria within, it will be deemed a tacit agreement by your acquiescence that this census is unlawful and that I have no obligation to participate.

Sincerely without malice, ill will, vexation or frivolity

I scrawled all over mine........included what a fantastic full moon night ride I had had over the Duddon Fells!!!

I'm expecting a rewrite.

There were no questions on "magnificence".....

To quote The Clash

"they told me it would be out here somewhere

out on this road"

and it was...on an old pack horse track at 21.30 under moonlight.

I thought it was important that they understood that but they hadn't had the foresight to ask.

Nor was there a question anywhere on Henry Weston's Vintage Cider.

Who writes these things?

it was my understanding that the census was instigated as a simple numerical count of the population; however, the information required in this census form far exceeds this mandate.

Which census was that then?

The 1851 census had questions about jobs, place of birth, marital status and "Whether blind, deaf, or idiot".

And the 1086 Domesday Book census was to determine "What, or how much, each man had, who was an occupier of land in England, either in land or in stock, and how much money it were worth."

Or do you mean an earlier one? 🙂

1. What law requires me to complete the census?

Mainly the 1920 Census Act, but knock yourself out:

Notice of Conditional Acceptance and Request for Clarification

etc etc etc

So, what's your (or rather the person who wrote this letter) objection then?

You voluntarily choose to live in this country controlled by a government. They supply services and allow you to live here, the freedom to work any job, spend your earned (or unearned) money as you see fit, procreate, etc etc, so why shouldn't that same government be entitled to ask each of their citizens this set of questions?

If you don't agree with it, or the level of 'intrusion' and prefer a more private life, then haul ass to Siberia, or some sub-Saharan African country where you can live out the remainder of your life in total privacy?

Kit, please tell me you're not serious.

I am being serious!

Everyone here has, at some point, had a bank account, had an employer, used the NHS, paid the taxman, and perhaps even made a purchase with a bank or credit card. And all of us are using the internet.

Therefore we have all, at some point, volunteered personal information to one organisation or another. Have you, at any point, told them to stuff it? Have you questioned their legal right to take that information, and what they will do with it? I very much doubt it, so why is there a problem telling the government the same information?

Or am I being horrendously naive? And if so, then I will gladly be enlightened because at the moment I do have absolutely no problem with the government knowing what they feel they need to about me.

edit:

chose to Kit????

Yeah, go live somewhere else if it's a problem.

I've to fill out a form once every ten years to confirm that I'm me, I live here, I've not spontaneously turned Afro-Caribbean and I still have a limb at each corner. Meh, I've had bigger hardships.

the good thing is that you can talk about the services you feel that the community needs-you can have anything you want as long as it is made of purple paper.

I notice you ignored my points Lawmanmx so I'll continue to bug you 🙂

i just Like to have the "choice" to fill or not fill in any correspondence, and not to be THREATENED with confiscation of funds if i dont comply.

I suppose they could change the rule to "Anyone who has not filled in the census is not entitled to any public services, benefits, national insurance, healthcare, food, water, housing etc as they have decided they don't exist and as such we haven't been able to allocate a budget for them" but that is a bit more difficult to implement than a simple fine.

is that so very wrong of me in this "so called" free country of ours?

A country isn't defined as being free or not based on whether you have to spend 10 minutes filling in a form every decade. 🙄

I've got a firm grip of my responsibilities as a citizen of this country. Do you complain when you are required to anything else in life? Do you pay taxes in this free country? Do you pay the nice person in the shop when you go to buy something in this free country? Assuming you're employed, do you show up to work each day in this free country? etc etc etc.

Like I said, you're free to leave the country if it doesn't suit you.

As the OP: I dont mind how many people, what type of house etc, or even the work Q's that are asked in the form as I understand how they can help twards planning towards the needs of society ( if only that were the case ) ... but religion, nah ... I'm not a religious person and dont think it has a place on the form as what is gained from it?

As far as I am aware ( and I could be wrong ), is not really upto the state to create facilities for religion ( such as churches / mosques / places of worship ). Religion to me is something that you chose to do / follow, chose to participate in, and that you put into it yourself ... and that places of worship are creations of the followers and not the state .... so if its not created by the state for the people ... why ask about it?

I also don't trust the no-belief answer ... dont know why, cant really explain, but i somehow feel that the answer would get dismissed as an I dont care / it wont matter to them type thing.

Dont worry folks, i'll not be preaching that we should all believe in the force and those that dont will be banished to the dark side on bikes with thin tyres wearing lycra.

Was listening to the head of the Jedi Church on the radio 4 the other day and I was left with the feeling it was something not unlike an atheist come natural law movement.

Spiritual without a deity, which sounds a bit like some eastern religions which he admitted was probably the inspiration for the order in the films. New age western Buddhism?

That all sounds like something better than 'no religion' which comes across at best like agnostic or at worst morally bankrupt. Plus you get a lightsaber (hopes).
