MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Got BT broadband installed today and running at 16MEG with a couple of teenagers and mobile devices means I don't want them watching things they don't need to see. Was going to try the BT software but it comes from McAFFEE so won't being trying. Any recommendations would be great.
its 2012, pornography is all around us.
its usually older people who watch porn, youngsters usually make their own.
My company uses Websense, I think it's only for corporate though. It sets your browser to got Through thier proxy which has all of the security measures built in, it can only be adjusted by and Admin account so its pretty robust. There maybe other companies / software available that does the same.
Take the doors of the rooms that will stop them
Just to add, with mobile systems you may be stuffed as it's very difficult to filter it out at the router,
Try OpenDNS Family Shield, you apply the changes to the wifi router so all devices connected to it are protected.
openDNS is free and might work but they'll find stuff if they want to, I think and probably easy to get round if you're IT-aware (I use it to restrict my 12 yr old's access to facebook but even that block seems variably successful and I'm not clever enough to know why that is - suspect it's DNS cache or something but don't really know/care how this stuff really works)
Open DNS signed up here.
Not totally foolproof...
Should have added that OpenDNS is not 100% foolproof. If your kids know how to change the DNS settings in iOS then they can circumvent it, depends if they treat their mobile devices as appliances or like to tinker.

Never did me any harm as a teenager
Teenagers these days don't know they're born. I remember having to forage
in hedgerows for porn.
Invite them down into the living room to watch some 'homemade video' that you and their Mother made back in the days of Betamax; that'll scar them for life and purify their internet browsing...
Three teenagers here - I've never installed any restrictions, but open doors work 🙂
Teenagers? Take them aside, tell them not to watch it and then trust them to behave. It's the only sensible way - even if they subsequently ignore you.
Remember, free WiFi is pretty common and you can't control what they look at when they are not on your network. Better to educate them and let them find out the rest for themselves.

I don't know your age, but I suspect instant access to some of what's available these days wasn't available.
We have Open DNS. It's not foolproof, and any canny teenager will go to their friend's house for internet access anyway!
I don't know your age, but I suspect instant access to some of what's available these days wasn't available.
Sadly it was dial up broadband on a 56k modem when I were a lad
3 hours to download a grainy 20 second clip. The wait was agonising 😆
Chunking one out to t'internet since 28k clickety-clackity modems...
Open door policy just encourages dogging.
We had Rotten, steakandcheese and Kazaa before all this new lot cottoned on.
I fear having children. I know what I've seen............ . . . . . so many dots, so many sights.
How many cups y'say?
Can't believe how in denial/reluctant the relevant authorities are in protecting youths from the dangers of "p2p filesharing" in an adolescent-sexualised context.
Ah, MSN... those were the days.

The good old grot fairy 😆
Is there anything else on the Internet other than STW and porn?
I must find time to broaden my searches sometime
They will see it regardless of what you do. So you can either annoy them and waste their time, or not.
As someone who works with teenagers in a completely informal setting and see's exactly what they are like in their element, I can categorically tell you that they are watching filth whether you like it or not.
Sticking a filter on the internet is going to do **** all. Sitting down with them and having a conversation about what porn is and why it is different to a healthy sexual relationship will make much more of a difference.
Sadly most parents don't have the guts and/or emotional intelligence to do this.
I quite like Microsoft Family Safety - it sends you an email listing the sites they've been visiting so you can check them for suitability. It won't stop them watching porn, but if they find something good at least you can enjoy it as well.
Are there people here of the-born in '87- generation yet to start families wondering how when we're parent's discussing physicality & emotion with teenagers how to not sound hypocritical?
My group used to have competitions watching the most ridiculous messed up stuff and the only conclusion I can come to is to instil a "moral compass" in my future kids.
Sure, they'll see what they see but I intend to be 100% honest and frank with tha' yout' because, goodness, someone has to guide them.
Just explain to them that they will die if they watch it ...
3 hours to download a grainy 20 second clip. The wait was agonising
great for your stamina, tho.
I went blind for a week, i'm sure.
I remember getting .ZIP's off Limewire with 1000's bitmaps on.
Bitmaps... on 28k, which became 32k and then 56k.
Some comedian has a joke about it but I reckon the ability to postpone climax for a particular internet generation comes-pardon the pun-from waiting that long for the pleasure-garden to load.
Edit: Emm, Mum, wash these. Don't touch 'em.

That's making me feel old. My first modem at home was a 1200bps one. First exposure to BBS and way too slow for porn. Even a badly digitised picture of Elle McPherson took longer to download than it would take to walk to the newsagents
"Healthy" sex? Eew yuk.
Healthy Sex?
In my local pub they have Sick Sex.
But it's spelt 6X

Looks wistfully into the distance...
