Guys,

Be careful with the beans if you're preparing them yourself from dried stocks,soak well, boil for 10 minutes, rinse and reboil.

Many beans are poisonous to humans unless prepared properly - they are not really supposed to be eaten by humans.

From memory red kidney beans, white kidney beans, soya beans are particularly bad but most beans contain levels of the toxin but cause little more than an upset stomach.

In response to some earlier threads, eggs provide all the essential amino acids so should form a part of any vegetarian diet (and no I'm not interested in debating whether they are vegetarian or not). See the list at the bottom of the link for other sources and mix and match as link suggests and you should get enough protein. Variety is the key.

i am not too concerned about protein - i like black beans (highest protein £:g ratio)

but i can't see that i'd have a good/ interesting varied diet if i cut out dairy/starchs + the meat.

any veggie dish ideas.

Tomthumb - not just about the protein. If you don't have the eggs in the iDave plan then you might miss some other stuff as you'd be effectively vegan. But then again the fill-your-face day would prob sort you out...

Unless you're actively growing/bodybuilding/pregnant you don't need much protein, just enough to replace skin shedding, hair & nail growth etc and various other secretions...

but all those things are inside you - they don't vanish into hyperspace

a good question, and it would be fun to collect one's nail and beard clippings etc to find out, but my guess is a lot less than 50g a day

molgrips, don't be a ****.

I was just posting up some advice, being a veggie myself I rely on beans for protein quite heavily and wasn't personally aware that some beans were toxic and needed to be processed and cooked to make them edible when i started.

If you want to throw away the rule book and be such a ****ing rebel then why don't you go eat some partially cooked kidney beans.

50grams a day? really, is that for a 40kg man or 105kg woman, and are they in training? how much food is that?

your 'guess' is a pretty shite guideline for people to follow, or are you advising on something relating to IT rather than diet?

there was me thinking approx 1.7g/kg would be about right.

no, my guess was 10 or 20 and the recommended amount I found was 50. The chart generally seems to show smaller people needed proportionately more due to being children so the recommendation was surprisingly invariant. But we're getting sidetracked - my point was that people get hung up on getting enough protein when in fact most diets will give enough

First day on the plan and I'm finding it tough fighting off sweet cravings! I've also just rinsed and boiled a bloody huge pot of beans only to find out I should have rinsed after 10mins and re-boiled! Is my enormous pot of beans in the clear or do they have to be binned because I didn't rinse after 10mins?

It'd be cool if anyone else on here who is doing it could post it all here so we have a place to come to and see who'd died or sacked it off or lost weight and feels amazing.

You had your chance on the previous thread discussing this (which you did your best to ruin with your puerile, pseudo intellectual and largely irrelevant 'arguments' and yet you are so socially inept and/or arrogant that you feel your input is invaluable on this thread which has nothing whatsoever to do with you.

What should have been a sharing of ideas, recipes, successes, or indeed failures, has once again degenarated into a typical SFB spiral of petty disagreements and irrelevant postings, of which unfortunately, I am now a party.

My suggestion would be for the OP to post again and hope the mods can institute a 'single thread ban on SFB' so that those who wish to exchange info can do so in the spirit it was intended.

My take on this exercise is that 1 day a week, I'm going to eat [b]whatever[/b] I want to, whether thats, pop, choclate, cheese or even fruit.
So, nothing !, is forbidden.
😉

Right, I'm up the Hospital, taken family mem to out-patients, so probably wont post anymore today.
This weekend I'll spend a little time prepping stuff for work next week, and trying recipe suggestions from here 🙂
As well as getting some ride-time in.

Carrots for brekkie were actually pretty good.
Black tea is a taste I'm aquiring.

Smoked mackerel wilted spinach and walnuts for lunch is sounding good!
Local beer festival tongiht and tomorrow but I'm planning on a glass of red or two instead.

Re tea - I find lighter teas like Darjeeling are a lot nicer without milk than standard British brews. Or light green tea, or chinese style for that matter.

Well, that didn't take as long as I thought it would.

Day off then today, unexpected, for the previoulsy mentioned reason.

Got back late lunchtime, but didn't have anything prepared....

It was at this point I heard the bread and cheese calling me 😯

But !, I resisted and made the following, only took about 10 mins.

Diced 2-3 inches of cucumber
Finely chopped half an onion
Diced a Tuna steak

Whacked the tuna steak pieces, onto a greased tray and under the grill

Put the diced and chopped cucumber and onion into a bowl

While the tuna was cooking I made up some more of the dressing I usually use for salad.

Olive Oil at a ratio of around 3:1 (2:1 if you prefer your dressing to be a little less viscous) with lemon juice or white wine vinegar.
So 30ml oil, 10ml lemon juice
Also added 10ml of dijon mustard and finely ground fresh black pepper, to taste, maybe a pinch of salt.

Whisked the oil, juice, mustard, etc, in a bowl.
That was the dressing done.
You might make a larger quantity and store it in the fridge for [b]a few days[/b].

Once the tuna was cooked, I added it to the cucumber and onion in the other bowl
Dressed with the, err, the dressing 🙂

Done !.

The point was, I resisted the easy choice of a sarny, and 10 mins later, I had something I really rather liked, and it got me out of a spot.
I'm a few days into this now and I don't want to waste my efforts so far.

I reckon that if I had the time in the morning, I could make this up and take with me to work.

I think one of the points of this plan is that if you take the time to actually think about what you are eating rather than just going for the convenient option you will generally make better choices

Exactly. I'm using this to widen my culinary horizon, and I aint scared of a little bit of work in the kitchen if thats what it takes to shed a few lbs, along with the cycling, of course.

did a walk this morning up coniston old man with only a bottle of water and a bit of last nights dinner for breakfast 😀

chunky chicken with a light chicken stock cube crushed over it spinach and peas 😀

roasting hot day today, I haven't given up on this thread just the weekend needs more attention for fun times!

Just had some delicious lamb with borlotti beans:

Grilled lamb steak with the following:

½ onion, peeled, chopped
1 garlic clove, peeled, chopped
½ tomato, chopped
1 tbsp tomato ketchup
100ml/3½fl oz chicken stock
200g/7oz canned borlotti beans, rinsed, drained

Heat olive oil in a frying pan and fry the onions and garlic for 2-3 minutes, or until softened. Stir in the tomato and tomato ketchup and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chicken stock and borlotti beans and simmer for 6-8 minutes.

Hi Alexxx, I'm glad you're sticking with the thread 🙂

Its been super hot, here in east anglia today.
I've started preparing some beans with an eye on Chargrilled tuna with dressed beans. If its any good, I'll post it.

I'm also planning to post a curry-style mix/garam masala type thing I've been working on

I dont have scales, but I feel as if things are defo going in the right direction

Good one BB. I'm doing the same, its the first time I've ever prepared beans. Curious to see how much they enlarge.

I've got canellini and pinto beans under an inch of water.

I looked all over for borlotti beans, but to no avail. Even tahini paste was difficult to find, until I found some in holland & barratt.
