They were speeding all through the practice sessions, and the teams were warned not to cut the corner, and all the pit crews were repeatedly warning drivers about it from Friday onward.
it's why 17 of them managed the entire race without a penalty
So why was Gasly's penalty overturned if they were warned not to cut the corner (and presumably this is where the distance discrepancy comes from)? It's either driver error, or not? This makes it even worse.
It’s a farce because this is at most GCSE level stuff. If you have two observations in different locations at different times then (other than the fact that an object was in those two locations at two specific times) the only thing you know is that the greatest possible average speed is the shortest possible physical distance between those locations divided by the time delta. That’s literally all it tells you.
What the FIA managed to do was broadly like setting ANPR cameras along the M4 and issuing tickets for anyone who travelled along it at a steady 70mph, and when people challenge the tickets they say “oh, but we asked you to come off at Leigh Delamere and have a coffee and a sticky bun” even though there’s no legal requirement to do so.
Of course the second farce is that then they decide to unpick some of the consequences when it’s impossible to unpick all of them, so a flawed implementation that was actually consistently applied becomes a flawed implementation with wild variations in consequences for different parties.
And, now teams are incentivized to not serve penalties during the race but to appeal them later.
Thing is, this has happened at an important time for Alpine, when there are shares up for sale and getting a podium will boost their value. If the other drivers hadn't been penalized, Gasly would probably have finished seventh. It's like Christmas came early for Flavio Briatore.
Wow that was a a great lap from Russell and Hamilton.
Feel bad for Charles! He was so downbeat in the interviews, hopefully he can make up some places at the start.

What's odd is that the other teams didn't question the speeding reports during practice. They knew they weren't speeding from on board data, so something was wrong somewhere, and the FIA wouldn't accept the teams data, so it was always going to be a penalty.
Have we done the Alonso to Alpine rumours, allegedly for one last hurrah?
One final half-witted decision in a career full of half-witted decisions?
Wish Alonso would sod off from F1 - way overated for far too long.
He doesn’t build teams around him, he just seems to cause friction and leaves if his foot stamping doesn’t get him results.
I see we can recycle the old caption from when Latifi finally qualified ahead of Russell, “no-one outqualifies Lance Stroll 42 times and gets away with it…”
Belting laps at the end from the top 3. Thought Lewis was out of it after posting a yellow sector 1, but sector 2 must have been immense. Game on!
So the big question for today is: what strategy call will Ferrari make to rob Lewis Hamilton of victory? My money is on staying out during a safety car period

the fact that the only successful appeal was given to Falvio Briatore’s team tells you all you need to know about what happened there!

You mean it confirms the fact that alpine were the only team to appeal in the first place?

well that answers that question, they’ve started Hamilton with softs on a high def track
Get in there Lewis!
Won the race, fastest lap, driver of the day. Brilliant job by Lewis and Ferrari.
Ferrari play a blinder

A broken clock is right twice a day. Some days the sun shines on a dog's arse.
Going to go down as one of Hamilton's best victories, might be a bit early to write off the new regulations, a few more races like that and the championship is still wide open.
Ham now 7th in the top ten oldest F1 winners.
The rest are from way back when F1 drivers were all in their 40's and 50's anyway. He is up in Mansell territory now. He's going to have to keep going until he is in his early 50's to get to the top.
Kimi Antonelli def looked very fast today
Yes the VSC helped but that stint on the mediums was raw pace. 2.5secs a lap quicker-that put LH in contention.
And after his final pitstop George wasn't far behind and, had Merc still had their early season pace advantage, would probably have won.
And class from Kimi being first to congratulate Lewis just as Lewis was first to congratulate him after his first win. They seem to have a lot of respect for each other.
Been a big LH fan since his first race so very happy 🙂
