I can't believe the views of some people. The pub conversation last night somehow got onto employing fat people. Some people were adamant they wouldn't employ a fat person because in their view it shows poor personal qualities (ie no discipline etc).WTF? Thank**** they are not in a position to employ people!!

I wouldn't employ any baldies - they make the place look old and past it.
Excessively thin people and anorexics are out - they just don't look healthy and give a bad impression, as does anyone with a visible birth mark.
The disabled make people feel guilty, so none of THEM, old people make others think of their own mortality, so no thanks and, sorry, but anyone who isn't white clashes horribly with the new furniture. So goodbye.
Women tend to give birth, so no females of childbearing age, no poor people because they talk funny and no one with an outdoorsy type hobby, they might just hurt themselves, and then where would we be!

Not nice, prejudice. Especially when it's being directed against you.

As someone who is pastry positive, I sometimes wonder about the people on here: Perhaps we could have a sticky telling us which prejudices are acceptable each week, just to give the mindless an idea who to hate, and desperate newbies an easy place to dive in.

Yeti, you are correct, not being perfect is a terrible problem in today's society:

I suffer from an excess of body fat. You, on the other hand suffer from a terrible lack of manners.

I'll stop eating for a while if you stop breathing.
Deal?

Im more than happy to be prejudiced against anyone who can be categorised by an elective act of their own. The religious, the fat, the mulleted, Man Utd supporters, etc etc. Each manifestation of someone's personal choices provides information on which to base an assumption about that person. Nowt wrong with that.

Rusty's extension into prejudice about the handicapped, race, gender or sexuality is spurious since they are examples of non-elective states.

The thing is bald people, disabled people and people with mental health problems, generally don't choose to be so. Whilst I'm sure some fatties have a reason for being fat, some people do seem unable to simply control their food intake and excercise, and then seem to bleet on about people picking on them. Whilst I don't hate them, I don't hate anyone, I struggle to understand their plight. Lots of people have times when they might put on a bit of spare, but they stay active and pretty healthy. But lets face it unless you excercise alot, when you watch that late night advert for anti chaffing gel, and think 'OoH! I could do with some of that', you need to be thinking I need to sort this out, and not crying onto your take away.

Stoner, yep, you're right. Being a bit of a chubster like myself is an elective choice - no problems with that, it's my responsibility to stay away from the cake trolley.

However, very difficult to say when issues with over or under consumption of food becomes a non-elective psychological condition.
Would long term anorexics benefit from being kicked out of hospital, told to eat something and then left to it?

eating disorders are medical conditions based in mental disorder so not elective. Testing positive for shortcrust is not in itself evidence of a medical condition 😉

Rusty Spanner - the difference is that a lot of those things you mention people can't help. You are born disabled or a woman, even anorexia is a diagnosable mental illness.

You choose to be fat or smoke, drink too much etc when you favor short term gratification over your own health and the huge cost to the nation who will pay for your self inflicted health problems.

However, anorexia or extreme obesity is NOT something people have much of a choice over, as you admit.

The religious, the fat, the mulleted, Man Utd supporters, etc etc. Each manifestation of someone's personal choices provides information on which to base an assumption about that person. Nowt wrong with that.

You left out those from Liverpool and people who live on Council Estates, Stoner.. 🙄

Prejudice is based on fear. People who feel inadequate see threat in something which differs or conflicts with their established idea of 'normality'. Also, directing hate and ridicule towards someone else is a way of deflecting attention away from themselves. A typical trait of weak-minded and inadequate people.

There are of course different levels of prejudice. Disliking Man U fans is probably more of a rivalry though. Disliking people because of the colour of their skin, religion, nationality etc is prejudice based on fear; the perceived threat from those others, to the individual's 'normality'. Take people out of their comfort zone, and they become defensive.

Prejudice towards disability, obesity or other physical traits is based on a subconscious fear that the individual may become thus afflicted themselves. It can be very frightening, to imagine yourself physically impaired in any way. The 'prejudice' is the social manifestation of instinctive repulsion towards physical 'abnormalities'. In the animal kingdom, young born with deformities are often killed or left to die, as they are of little or no 'value' to a pack or group.

The greatest weapon against prejudice is knowledge. Understanding why someone is fat can help actually break down prejudice. Whilst obesity may indeed be as a result of ill-discipline or laziness by the individual, it is not something they should be made to feel 'less equal' over. And whilst a bit of 'banter' between friends can be acceptable, wider social prejudices should be challenged, as they are damaging and negative. A person who may be suffering from an eating disorder surely needs help, support and love, not hate and fear directed against them.

Wether an issue is 'self-inflicted' or not, prejudice is not nice. 🙁

Talkemada,
I agree, it's not nice to be prejudiced, but most people aren't really that nice all the time. This thread is a perfect example.

You've got to choose your arguments - I've argued on many occasions that it's fine to mock people for what they choose to do or say, but not for the things that they can't change.

However, problems with self image, over/under eating, self harm etc are difficult for people who have never experienced them to comprehend.
If they haven't been in this situation themselves, or witnessed the effects on family or friends, then many people can't understand why someone can't just start eating, give up alcohol/drugs etc.

That's why I try to give most of the posters on this and related topics the benefit of the doubt, at least initially.

Taking that into account I'd be alright because I'm fairly slim but love a good slice or three of cake, and the vending machine for that little bit of afternoon delight - the twix, or even a twirl, or even a dairy milk.

Get in! More jobs for me because I am fairly slim but love the cake!!

been reading this thread and have to say that it goes to prove that the Singletrack forum has hit a new low - the "perfect" people on here must really live in fragile worlds that the only way to fend of the impending middle age spread is to attack the very people they are so scared to become.

Actually when you think about it it's really quite funny and would love to do a cencus on this place to see what we can pick from their lives that doesn't fall into "the norm"

Incidentally, are you the bullies from school that never grew up? got a job in middle management, married some headchuck partner that makes you want to vomit into your helmet on a daily basis and have been saddled with a child who's more interested in art than the sports you hold so dear and you now find the only way to hold your head up is to point out the foibles of others rather than looking at your own life and realising how much of a ****ing mess you've made of it?

Right seens as we are having a serious go at this one.

I'm not the slimmest Jim in the world and if I thought that people wouldn't employ me because of it then I'd be a bit upset, I'm not very good at my job but that's got nothing to do with my weight.

I own the company and we employ quite a few people and we employ soley based on merit, that's all.

So if your a fat 1 handed hermaphrodite from Colne and you're the best person for the job you get the job (even though you're from Colne).
