The high up shelf went up easy.
The lower shelf started drilling the wall ,half inch in then solid. Tried a few more, same story.
This has happened before. What is this mystery material that someone has thought to insert in random bricks?
What can I do? I tried various drill bits , put it on hammer time and still no go.
I have this on occasion in the garage. One hole will go super easy next brick along won't go without some serious pressure and changing drills
Sounds like old bricks once you are through the plaster. Pretty hard. Just use an sds (with proper hammer) and a reasonable quality bit.
SDS drill, show it who's the boss
Is there a random steel behind the wall ?
Probably a gas pipe. Give it some welly...

FFS, don't just go at it with abandon without properly assessing how you are going to video it first!
There is a jewellers next door 🙂
You might have hit the luminous crack, every wall has got one…somewhere
As long as you're sure there no pipe of electric behind, you need to figure out if it's hard brick or a steel. Steel, you'll need something like a cobalt brill bit (and no hammer) hard brick, a decent hammer drill. Ads should not be need really if you're putting say a 7mm hole in for some earl plugs, but a decent bit will make all the difference. I like Bosch ones, but dewalt extremists has been good as well (and is often on offer in screw fix)
Tried to raw plug a concrete lintel last week. Was tough thought I was finally making progress till I pulled out and noticed half the drill bit had ground away. Eventually used a smaller one to make a pilot hole.
Drill bit out of the drill, into the hole, malky with a lump hammer a few times - chips a hole in the hard bit and off you go.
Usually works for me 😉
Get a small (2.5mm) HSS drill, have a go, then feel the tip, if steel it will be relatively cool, if concrete it will be very hot, then as others have said, borrow a SDS drill to boss it.
