So we're meant to shell out $1 Billion to be told what's going to happen by Trump and his hangers on....  what an unmissable deal!

Do you think if the official European response to the Greenland threats and tariffs was a little more blunt and actually said "this is insane, it's crazy to be threatening allies like this, undermining the NATO alliance puts the US and Europe at greater threat from Putin's Russia, why are the legislative and judicial arms allowing the executive to put all of us at risk" it might make the slightest difference?

Me neither, but it was a pleasant daydream while it lasted

Pretty obvious it will be a Trump organisation.

It's like something from a cheesy James Bond movie. A club for billionaires to settle wars/conflicts around the world. Highest bidder is the winner.

We're not dealing with sane people here. At any level. There doesn't appear to be a single reasonable person in the trump administration

At least in his first term a few sane people realised quickly what the deal was and either quit or were fired but as far as I can tell, apart from MGT who wasn't actually part of the Trump administration, no one has quit or been fired so far

His entire team is staffed by the same level of lunatic. However, they're not stupid. Evil, but not stupid.

My opinion is they're manufacturing this situation, along with the other unrest via ICE, with a view to cancelling the mid terms and ultimately the next full election.

What happens if Denmark calls his bluff and says he can buy Greenland - $75 Trillion.

Where would he get the money from? Would the US congress/Senate agree to pissing so much money on a daft vanity project?

I initially assumed this was a hoax, but reputable accounts on Twitter seem to be taking it seriously.

I think what's insane is that plenty of people will be cheering Bovino on!

In any normal reality the GOP would be completely wiped out in the Midterms, the reality is, the Dems stand a good chance of just about getting the House, but millions will still vote for Trump & it will likely come down to a few seats.

Trumps tariffs have backfired- inflated domestic prices, meanwhile China had its biggest EVER export surplus last year

His immigration policies have led to more immigrants being in work and less American born workers in jobs

Now his batshit Greenland obsession is turning into another farce that has virtually no popularity at hime

The only `success` the brain dead MAGA can point to is Trumps immigration policy. Seeing ICE pepper spraying or murdering `Liberals` will be all they need to see to believe things are going their way. But from now on they will start noticing his policies affecting the money in their pockets and their anxiety of accessing health care.

I don`t see Trump being able to do much more to distract them from the coming sh1t storm their going to get buried under.

A price worth paying for a lot of people though,as long as it’s them not paying and anyway it won’t be Trump it’ll be some lefty shadow organisation that’s causing all this.

I think this is pretty much it,they need a situation to blame then it’ll be a postponing of midterms whilst the ongoing situation is sorted.

It's Davos week for the full Maga roadshow. Can we expect a full blown lecture, Greenland campaign, Euro-shaming word salad before they all flounce off early in a puff of orange....? I'm not thinking he'll waste any time unless, as it's Switzerland, he's on a one way Sarcopod trip...

For me those were the days when I thought "he's openly mocking the disabled on live TV, that should be enough to keep him out of office"

Let alone being found liable for rape, a convicted felon, already proven to look after the ultra wealthy and screwing the poor, best mates with Epstein, openly supportive of white supremacists, treason, using Nazis messaging....

But then, there are enough people in the UK that still support him and merrily gas light anyone (which is all the TDS garbage is) that validly points out that stuff like, murdering US civilians isn't good

I'm going to put my neck out and predict Trump will be gone by April .. I think this latest absurdity will be the final straw. Trump isn't just pulling up drawbridges - he's blowing them up!

My thoughts are that Trump is now in a state of panic as things are beginning to hit the fan, and he knows he and those around him will face the music (well prison time actually). So he's lost the bap and gone Tonto!!

NATO is fundamental to keeping the USAs dominance and of course revenue streams going. It's hard to imagine Trump being allowed to destroy that over an island which the USA wouldn't be able to make money from for a very long time and at very high costs too.

Via what mechanism? He won't quit. It's nigh on impossible for him to be ousted. It's not like the UK where they can dissolve parliament and call an early election. US presidential elections happen every 4 years without fail.

Unless he croaks he's not going anywhere

This is my hope but experience has taught me that every time I think he's finally gone too far, he manages to surprise me.

I really hope that Starmer has got Ben Elton to write his speech so he can give us a proper Hugh Grant moment. I would love to hear him announce the state visit is postponed due to America's hostile attitude to their allies, though that message might be better coming in a speech from Charlie himself.

I can see him getting impeached but not convicted at a senate trial, needs a 2/3 majority.

Maybe be more likely his last two years are spent defending against impeachments (multiple) and Congress blocking and pre-emptively blocking stuff.

Unless he tries/succeeds in ending elections/taking the Russian route.

I think everyone understands that becoming president was Trump's only hope of avoiding spending his remaining years in prison. I agree with @e-machine  and @tjagain the increasingly steep descent of his dementia is showing more rapidly than the make-up, drugs and careful manipulation of his appearances and timetable can continue to cover up. At some point in the next few months he's either going the way of most dementia patients - pneumonia through aspiration of food/drink, or a fall. Or they'll shove him out the door (25th) before he wets himself live on TV.

Impeachment? Dementia-Don has said himself he is likely to be impeached if they lose enough seats in the mid terms. I feel the fall out, from what he very likely threw out as another distraction from the tanking economy and Epstein files, will be enough for enough Republicans to side against him if impeached now.

Its one thing being corrupt enough to side with him for financial gain - but how its looking there could instead be financial pain on the horizon instead.

Gotta love Macron. Small man syndrome possibly, but he seems keen to hit back at Trump .. looking at their little handshake battles its clear Macron doesnt like the old, fat, cognitively dissolving idiot having one up on him.

As it's MLK day, a little reminder that Trump seeks to diminish the national holidays that mark civil rights advancement:

https://www.outsideonline.com/culture/opinion/national-parks-mlk-day/

Is it because he's a racist? Yes.

Is it because enabling and validating racists enables and validates him in their eyes? Yes.

What do you think happens after that?

None of us imagine the demise of Trump will be the demise of the fascism he is leading, but nonetheless, it will still be something to celebrate.

The more specific answer is "if Trump dies from illness, JD Vance becomes president for the balance of the term". Vance is younger, smarter, more efficient and arguably more evil than Trump. That's nothing to celebrate.

I think if Vance takes over, the whole things fall like the pack of cards it is. MAGA is a cult, the leaders of cults need to be sociopaths or psychopaths, it's why Scientology is still successful, David Miscavige is just as much as a psychopath as LRH was. Vance is many things - most of them made up for convenience, the thing he hasn't got is personality, which is pretty fundamental if you want to run a cult of personality.

What would happen if Don got impeached?  Not that i think that's likely, but should it happen what would follow?  Does that also lead to the VP (Vance) getting sworn in,  or a hasty election,  or something else?  I would guess it's Vance again.   Although if he saw an impeachment before his very eyes it would take the wind out of his sails I'm sure.

_If_ the Toddler in Chief got impeached, I can imagine him fighting it via the Supreme Court, or just claiming it was insurrection and carrying on as he is now. If he did go and Vance took over, it _might_ cause him to take note of the repercussions, but it might also push him into trying to make sure that could not happen to him.

I know it has been said before, but I think MAGA dies with Donny. It is a cult ánd Vance just does not have that level of charisma to carry it off. I think there would be some really heavy rat-sack fighting as soon as he took office and, if it is even possible, end up with even less of a coherent goverment.

I think/hope there is an element of truth to this. Vance has blown in the wind a bit, and seems to be in the pay of Thiel rather than Musk, so arguably more dangerous and more subtle, but I'm not sure the Vance/Thiel combo will maintain the same level of unthinking support that Trump/Musk have. I could potentially see Republicans being more guarded and critical, and trying to twist and squirm to put some distance between them and the executive under Vance.

This my glass half full view. I mean, we could end up looking back to the good old days under Trump.

Nothing from the orange man yet. Too early to have risen. Still putting his five word sentances together ?

At least Starmer can string sentances together and has clearly listened and memorised the speech that has been put together with advisors.

Impeachment?

Not going to happen either. Certainly not by April and not after the mid terms either. While they can instigate impeachment, given the current Rep vs Dem split in the house of representatives, it would be unlikely to make it through that, but if it did, it still needs a 2/3rd majority vote in the senate and in the upcoming mid terms only 33 of 100 seats are up for election, 20 of which are Rep. Even if all 20 flipped to the dems, they'd still only have 65/100 seats in the senate. 1 short of a guaranteed majority for impeachment

Impeachment is the process not the out come and it certainly can happen - as in the process of impeaching a president can happen - given that its already happened to trump twice, making him 50% of all the presidents that have ever been impeached. It could happen more than once post November.

No president has ever successfully be removed from office via impeachment. Yet.

If the GOP fair badly in the midterms then all bets are off really as Trump value electorally for a lot the party will then be spent and their attention will turn to trying to scrape his shit of their shoes - the party is already jockeying for position in a post-trump era and demininshing Trumps influence post 2028 is an important part of that.  And I don't think it's in anyway certain that republicans will  vote on party lines on party lines this time. Trump himself believes ,and has said, he'll be impeached if things go badly in november

Oh, that's what it started as fo'shure but honestly you don't need to dig too hard to find evidence of his descent to madness, after all you don't create a secret plan (Operation Normandy) to take over an entire town in Florida. Or get 13 year old girls to be your secret agents to spy on your own secret organisation  (sea Org) within your own cult.

That doesn't matter. We aren't even 1 year into a 4 year presidential term (tomorrow is the 1 year point). If Trump had a heart attack tomorrow, Vance would have 3 clear years before he needs any kind of popular endorsement - if he is even bothered about re-election. Vance is not going to sit around doing nothing for that time - he would use every ounce of executive power in its most aggressive interpretation to pursue his evil agenda.

Trump karking it of natural causes would not be anything to celebrate and would not lead to an improvement in the situation. And god forbid if there's any suggestion of a cause other than his own ill health...

I was in Montana snowboarding in the few weeks before the 2nd invasion of Iraq and remember seeing Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld etc  on TV attempting to justify their plans and basically thinking this lot are f****n lunatics. They absolutely were but the current lot are on another level altogether, and its what comes after Trump thats genuinely worrying, FFS even John Bolton sounds like a pacifist compared to some of Trumps advisors/handlers

Trump karking it of natural causes would not be anything to celebrate

The bottle of champagne in my fridge disagrees..

Is your bottle of champagne sentient enough to appreciate the consequences of a JD Vance presidency?

Well, @MSP has been proven correct I feel. All the careful diplomacy towards Trump from the UK government has been shown up as being pointless. Worse than pointless, it may well have emboldened Trump’s fascist tendencies. Standing firm and showing strength now is the only way to get through this period of Trump rule. Personally I think this is only possible for the UK in coordination with the rest of Europe.

Anytime watching Trump in his press conference?

2 things already, he sounds and looks really unwell. Also, he's just rambling on even more than usual if that's possible.

Oh, did he just say  ISIS is mostly composed of Hispanic people?

Did he really just say that? I'm only half watching as it's painful to watch.

I stopped watching, he is just rambling. Remember when the dems got (rightly) a kicking for allowing Biden to keep going even when he was obviously in mental decline? These sorts of conferences are going to feel equally embarassing one day.

Agreed, and if it brings us closer to Europe and undoes some of the damage of recent years then it's a tiny silver lining to an otherwise shitty situation.

Grandpa Simpson has entered the chat. Nurse.. nurse..!?

But, no, he said that about ICE - can't say if that is any more accurate than your suggestion though.. 🤣

It’s just been reported not even JD Vance or Marco Rubio were aware of Trumps intention to impose sanctions on everyone who opposed his loopy Greenland plan

He didn’t discuss it with them, or anyone else, he just announced it as it popped into his demented senile head

We really are in full ‘Mad King’ territory now. He’s just making stuff up on the hoof, with no consultation, not even with the other headbangers

The former head of NATO has just said on Channel 4 news that Trump is presently the greatest threat to world peace.

He’s not wrong! Its safe to say that we now have somebody completely mentally unstable in charge of the worlds largest military and economy 😳

Best buckle up! Christ only knows what craziness awaits us when that headcase arrives at Davos

That has been obvious for some time, stating it when you find the barn door open and the horse is barely visible on the horizon is a bit too late, these "professionals" should have been pointing this out for at least 6 months if not earlier.

I've sat next to a department permanent secretary and ministers own secretary, plus various other minions as the Minister made a speech. He announced something which had not been planned or even discussed. The scramble in the room, followed by urgent chat about how to respond to the press made it clear it was not the first time...

BBC cut the stream at one point and I could only hope that he'd had a stroke live on air. Sadly not.

I watched about 5 minutes of his press conference.  Just aimless rambling, bizarrely it doesn't really matter because no actual real people will be watching it and the press have no choice but  to pick out the bones and show the odd clip doing his job for him

Anyone sane not pressed mute yet? Can we interrupt his waffle with a Tango advert? How did this nutcase get the keys to the White House for a second time, after a four year break?!?!

the clips ive seen are just a sad old man rambling on

hes supposed to fly to Davos after this and face down all the world leaders that absolutely hate him?

I wonder if the EU cancelling the trade deal has got to him as he sees himself as the great dealmaker.

what a joke

Oh good God, I actually believe I have been hypnotised. I can’t stop watching his rambling speech. I can’t turn it off. I feel like somebody holding a high voltage wire unable to let go.

This man has his finger on the little red button. He is beyond awful. Words fail me.

A mentally ill old man ranting and talking incoherently in charge of the US. How can even his supporters watch him and feel that he represents them?!

At what point does there actually have to be an intervention for the sake of world peace? Genuinely. What if we had intervened historically in the rise to power of other renowned megalomaniacs? Imagine how many lives would have been saved and how much unnecessary suffering would have been caused?

My mates mum was suffering from dementia but wouldn’t stop using her car, so one day my mate just got her keys, drove her car back to his house and when she asked where her car was, he told her she sold it about a year ago

I wonder if they could do a similar thing with Trump?

You keep saying you’re the president…. yes dear…. let’s get you your medication and a nice cup of cocoa
