Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life.

If I had my own private medical clinic literally in my house which includes an o2 supply, 20 doctors at my beck and call, and my own helicopter that could whisk me off at a moment's notice to one of the best hospitals in the world, I'd probably be less afraid of covid. Especially if unlike the rest of the American public I didn't have to worry about the bill.

Though tbh if I lived in America I'd probably be more worried about paying for my insulin than covid so I guess that works too.

I don't know what a "mussolini moment" is but the Trump/Mussolini comparison has always been pretty sharp. If you watch Mussolini giving speeches, the mannerisms etc are uncannily similar at times (except that Mussolini was physically fitter and could move his hands fast and stuff, whereas Trump can only do the weird point-from-the-elbows thing) But above all, Mussolini was basically shit.

Trump before CV19: ‘Masks are stupid, Biden is weak for wearing one.‘
Trump with CV19: Biden hasn’t caught it, so is not qualified to have an opinion on how to deal with it. I’m the best Covid-dealer, probably even better than the best. Vuhrry vuhrry tough on Covid. Not like the democrats who are weak on Covid’

Poopscoop

Yeah, if that was a trailer for a series, I’d give it a miss.

Might have to watch season 2 next year, whether I like it or not.

It's reasonably likely that Donald's 'don't fear the Covid' message will be subtly undermined by his symptoms rebounding by the weekend and him getting readmitted. And if that happens, he is in real trouble.

If all he can muster on a ****load of powerful steroids is the appearance of a reaminated corpse struggling for breath, then he should be resting 24/7. When the drugs wear off and his energy drops, we will see.

Obviously, we don't know whether he was admitted on day 3 or day 7/8, because the WH won't confirm when his last negative test was. If that was day 3, then day 7 could be nasty.

Still think the whole thing is faked.

Especially since the "don't let it dominate" speech.

It's all about Trump beating the deep state and fake media.

It’s reasonably likely that Donald’s ‘don’t fear the Covid’ message will be subtly brutally and mercilessly undermined by his symptoms rebounding by the weekend and him getting readmitted.

FTFY

Still think the whole thing is faked.

It's not faked. Numerous White House staff have been diagnosed, along with several Republican senators. He's utterly desperate because the pandemic has destroyed any claim he has to being a competent leader. He looks to be struggling badly to breath in the videos, but he feels he has to put on a show of being normal so he can pretend covid isn't a big deal. There's a good chance he'll be on a ventilator or dead by the end of the week, he really does not look good in those videos.

Presumably the pilots, secret service and marines that travelled with Trump are now in isolation for 2 weeks? How long before they run out of staff?

Or are they expected to just carry on and risk widening the spread?

There's a real possibility that The Speaker will have to take over if the White House becomes non-functional

Cos that's just the same, Trump has never lied about anything.

He is trying to project that of a strong leader and Covid is not as bad as "they" say. His base are loving it. Someone on Twitter has called it his "Mussolini Moment". There is a huge number of Covid deniers in the USA.

I know this place can be a bit liberal echochamber, but I've just seen the news pictures and this is incredible, that anyone can be watching this and thinking that it's going to boost his vote.

Yet he has some hugely intelligent and extremely savvy operators working for him, who are devising this strategy for him.  I (and by extension most of you) can't get my head round it, but if his team thinks it's a good plan, there must be a substantial part of the population lapping it up.

Is it us that are detached from reality after all? Are we all missing something, because I'd sure as hell like to know what.

Maybe not what they signed up for....

I was cynical at first, but he's clearly trying to hide the fact that he is ill to some degree or another.

Obviously, he has a one man hospital in ace in the WH, taking "working from home" while recovering to a new level. Wonder if extra kit was being installed while everyone was watching the military hospital instead?

We're going to be out front. As your leader, I had to do that. I knew there's danger to it, but I had to do it. I stood out front, and led.

The man is truly despicable. I can't wish the man dead, but its actually a struggle not to.

The very thought of him trying to twist this near miss and chronic miss management of the crisis to his benefit is entirely expected, but still stomach churning.

Say what you want about Boris (and the man isn't a favourite of mine by any means), but the contrast to when he emerged from hospital is stark.

Not out of the woods quite yet however though is he..

I'm not sure he is surrounded by the best strategists anymore - they've all left or been sacked. He's now surrounded by evangelical sycophants and his kids.

This is true. But they are both now telling us to be "brave" and not be "scared" of Covid... despite both receiving early intervention health care that our parents and friends would not. Bullishness is great... but someone at the top needs to be leading our response to the medical emergency.

Anyone know what was in the Trump tweet that Twitter took down over night for breaking their rules?

Nope. And fingers crossed when he thinks he's just about to leave the woods, he steps on a branch and gets whacked in the knackers.

I'm pretty sure I saw clips of large items being wheeled in on Twitter. Presumably the iron lung and embalming equipment.

Anyone know what was in the Trump tweet that Twitter took down over night for breaking their rules?

He tweeted the email address of a journo. Twitter doesn't mind the constant misinformation and abuse, but apparently that's a no-no.

I do not think he has. I think this is just Trump insisting and doing what he wants. He believes it the best strategy so it must be the best. It appeals to his base but he is going to need more than that

Ah... looks like it featured an email address for a journalist... and was reposted without it...

If the President bounces back onto the campaign trail, he will be an invisible hero, who not only survived every dirty trick the Democrats threw at him, but the Chinese virus as well. He will show American we no longer have to be afraid... [email redacted] Thank you Miranda. Was over until the Plague came in from China. Will win anyway!

I've no idea what the "Was over until the Plague came in from China" line could really mean, if it was meant to be meaningful, but it's clear what it's supposed to elicit in the voters.

[ edit : cheer martinhutch... I missed your post while I was searching ]

This must be one of those mad ramblings that the NYT occasionally publishes for the sake of 'balance'. There truly are very few people who support Trump yet can construct a paragraph that makes any sense.

If he's 'bouncing back onto the campaign trail' (no chance), how is he going to be invisible?

how is he going to be invisible

It's a chinese whispers (I appreciate the irony of the term!) typo isn't it - invisible = invincible.

Some news sources use the correct version - some the bastardised version.

I'd see it as the least worst strategy rather than a good plan.

It's not fake. He's not a genius political strategist. He's a shameless huckster who delights in violating norms of decency. Last time around, nobody knew how to deal with him because he did things that were always considered political suicide. A large portion of the population was sick and tired of the lameness of professional politicians so they voted for him because they thought he was a successful businessman who would shake up the establishment.

Now he is the establishment but he doesn't have anything new to run on so he's still trying to run on the old platform of an outsider who will shake up the corrupt Washington elite. His support is bleeding away because the last week or two has brutally exposed what a fraud he is. He's not faking it because his staff aren't competent enough to do something that sophisticated and also because him getting covid utterly destroys his myth of competence. He is clearly struggling to breath in that video, you don't need to be a doctor to spot that.

He’s not a genius political strategist.

Nobody has said that.

His support is bleeding away because the last week or two has brutally exposed what a fraud he is

I wish it was but it isn't. They don't care that he's a "fraud". They want to dodge taxes and grab women by the p***!.

This is almost the last throw of the dice.

If he wins fine, if he loses, he then calls corrupt election.

I have a horrible feeling he is going to beat Biden.

Nope, and the ones that do work for him, are mostly too busy fighting with each other like rats in a sack. Trump does what he wants. He's the only "operator" in the White House.

It's not just down to strategy and persuasion but also voter turnout. My wife's family have Cocopah friends in Arizona. They didn't ever like Trump but didn't bother to vote because they were convinced he couldn't get elected. Five members of their family have died. Might be a bit different this time round.

I think people are so used to horrible election surprises that they assume we're in for another one. I, for one, am sick of my wife waking me up in the morning with the cheery news that a bunch of idiots have voted for Brexit or Trump.

I don't want Trump to die. It's a worst-case scenario - he'll be a martyr to some, and remain a hero with his full pomp funeral instead of dying from a thousand legal cuts in the wake of a resounding election defeat. This way, the curtain never gets pulled back. It's the perfect 'out' for him and his legacy.

If he goes before the election, it screws everything up.

that Colbert bit is funny but also very true. A similar narrative was thrown Boris when was sick he got through being " "strong" and having "courage" which suggest anyone who doesn't survive doesn't have it. Like he said the realist it they got THE best care possible and given every single drug possible to make them better.

Recommend you watch John Oliver Last week tonight, shown last night.

Its main feature is the Election, and an astonishing bit where a black voter had to wait 8 hours in a queue to vote (I think it was last primaries). Also it's predicted we won't know the election result until end of Nov cos of sheer number of postal votes, although trump is predictably ramping up the 'election night' results

Yep millions of votes have been cast already the state of the polls are set in stone for many

The worst thing is that Trump will do everything he can to stop those postal votes being counted, many can't be opened until election day, they agreed likely to favour Biden

Trump will want it to seem close, so he can undermine a bad result

Took Johnson 3 weeks to get over covid & even now he's a shambling mess (Tbf he ways was)
Be interesting to see how trump juggles recouperating & trying to campaign

Is he seriously saying that he "deliberately" contracted Covid/took one for the people, in order to lead from the front? It sounded like that was the underlying message behind his address.

The toxic masculinity with which Trump, Johnson, Putin, Bolsonaro all appear to be competing is the polar opposite of whats needed in this situation. As the numbers demonstrate.

Its no coincidence that these leaders all head countries with appalling death rates, whereas countries with female leaders are faring far, far better
