Wife's car in need of 2 new front tyres. It's got Uniroyal Rainsport 3 on ATM - seem ok.
Car does maybe 5000 miles year mainly around town with occasional 50 mile journeys and a couple of longer motorway journeys per year. Car never does more than 75mph and that's hardly ever.
Need to be safe first and foremost. Bog standard 205/55 R16 size seem to start around £55 for recognised brands...are there any good ones that I might not have thought of? Not looking to put any old shite on there to save a few quid...cheers

I was going to reccomend these until I reread your post and saw you already have them... I'd go with them again, it's probably what's going on mine next, they seem well regarded.

I've always found Goodyear EfficientGrip to be pretty good and quite well priced.

I've had Hankook Ventus tyres in the past and they have been pretty good (I used to rack up 20k/year) on them in a big, heavy, diesel estate. I used to change them at 3mm as the wet grip drops off sharply about then and I was doing a lot of motorway work.

I really didn't rate the one set of Maxxiss tyres I had. Great in the wet ghastly in the dry iirc.

Got those on my car currently and they're as good as the Dunlop BluResponse ones I had before that, which are as good as the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance I had on my previous car. Only went for the Uniroyals this time as I had one new one on the car from a puncture and they were on a silly cheap offer locally. Would have been happy to pay full price.

I've got Falken all season tyres on 1.5 of my cars (Nokian winters on the rear of one just will not wear down!) and I'm very happy with them so far. Think they were £125 a pair fitted for 15", slightly more for 16".

I fitted a pair of Avon ZV7 to the fronts on my car about 5000 miles ago, same size as yours (205/55 R16) - they have been fine. Previously had Pirelli and Continentals from Black Circles, all around the £55-£65 each.

Avons were £53.75 each fitted via Black Circles and a garage near me. Grip seems identical (not that I'm driving anywhere close to finding out!) but road noise seems interestingly reduced over both the previous options I've had. I'm sure it's subjective but I do prefer them so far!

Hankook Ventus Prime 3 K125

I bought them in 205/55/16 based on this test by AutoBild where they topped the results: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2016-AutoBild-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm. They actually tested the tyres in that size, so has extra relevance I think. A-rated for wet performance too.

Fitted to a Mini Cooper S, can’t fault them in the 6 months they’ve been on. £220 fitted for 4.

I’d previously used Rainsport 2’s and had considered Rainsport 3’s but was put off by reports of poor longevity.

I've tried the Goodyear in 205/55R16 flavour on our golf (twice, as it happens, as it was a company car) and didn't like them. Pirelli p7 or Dunlop blu both better in terms of grip.

Did also try the Goodyear in a lower pro 17" size on an mpv and they were much better than on the golf.

For 5k of town use I wouldn't bother with anything efficient! Just get something grippy.

Thirded, though if you live in the country they really are crap on mucky roads, but that probably applies to the majority of tyres.

+1 RS3's - Excellent grip in the wet and really good in the dry too. Not sure how long they last as they only lasted 1 day for me, first half of the day raining, second half glorious sun at Castle Combe. 😆

I usually get Hankook via Black Circles. Always cheapest using Black Circles (also go via Quidco to Black Circles)

I have no connection to them (despite how my post looks!)

I've just had these on the front, I always get whatever michelin/goodyear/continental/dunlop 'efficient' tyre is cheapest at the time. The Continental's feel horrible, the front always feels like it's about to slide off the road and the same under braking.

On that basis, Dunlop Sport bluresponse or michelin energy saver were both better.

Toyo Proxes on my S-Max

Toyo Open Country HT on my Pathfinder

Both were reasonably priced and performed well and lasted well

One set via Etyres who were brilliant. Big van showed up at my work and changed the tyres in the car park. Completely hassle free.

One set via Blackcircles who sent then to a local fitting centre who were a complete shambles.

I found conti premium 5's to be a bit better than rainsport2, but cant say how they compare to rainsport3.

I like the Michelin Crossclimates but they not particularly cheap, seem to last a long time though + grip/noise is good.

Fourthded and agreed. I've move on to Sport Contact 5s which're great.
