How would you go about removing this old clothes line pole?

I was thinking about cutting it near the base then smashing concrete round it cutting again then concrete again.

What say you? Lots of clever folk on here, good to glean some info if I can.

I wouldn't cut the pole, it may be handy having something to pull later.

Turn into a "feature". Hanging baskets perhaps, or grow runner beans up it. Or use both poles for a hammock.

Or . . . how about using it to dry your washing 🙄

As above, try smashing the base first, you might find there isn't a substantial lump there and then you can use the pole to free up most of it.

You could dig round it to see how much concrete is actually there. You've got to hope it was done on the cheap and whoever put it in used the absolute minimum.

Attach it to the back of your car with a steel cable and pull it out - what could possibly go wrong?

Lop off pole at ground level, use the ready made slab to build a nice BBQ? Assuming it's a nice spot for a BBQ?

As above dig round the pole to see how much cement there is. Had similar situation with a basket ball hoop installed on the drive of a house we bought, fortunately there wasn't that much concrete. Dug it up whole then cut the pole, as above don't cut the pole first as it could be useful for applying leverage.

I had four of those in my lawn, each one embedded in so much concrete it looked like Robert McAlpine himself had been using my garden to practice in. So they got cut off as low as possible, below grass level, and each one given a little grass toupee. Seems to be fine.

EDIT Not four of those ^, sadly.

Having tied to break up the concrete on the base of one, I'd just dig it out. Have chopped off the top of one as a "last solution" option bar.. & had to use it on a stuck BB (two of us, one holding the frame and one using the bar eventually got it!)

I'd start by cutting the grass
Then thinking about it over a beer

I took one of those out for my folks, it was an easy sledgehammer job to break up the concrete, but then it was pretty low quality concrete. I am not a concretist, but yours doesn't look that great either?

There's the pitch for a movie, right there!
Suggestions for the cast, anyone?

Just like everyone else I have nothing constructive to add. I removed something similar a few years ago. Started out thinking it was going to be fairly straightforward until I found that actually there was roughly the same amount below the surface. It was hard work.

Smash the concrete.

A bit of high pressure hosing around the base of the pole and start wiggling it.

Maybe some pole dancing on it a la dudeofdoom will loosen it faster and be more fun. 🙂

Be sure to wear the correct clothing for the job (sorry, just an excuse to post the link 🙂 )

You could try dropping a lit banger or three down the inside. Or maybe get it realy hot with a blowtorch so it expands and cracks the concrete, then coolit with iced water so you can pull it out.

Hire a bloke with a hydraulic breaker. That's what I do with the fence posts set in concrete mixed with flint.

Despite the many erudite suggestions.

I can confirm there is a winner......

Its lovewookie ( he called it first) with 'The Breaker' As is my want I'm keen to extend my power tool arsenal but feel this particular pickle lends itself well to a hire scenario.

You're right too, so Ive also elected to refrain from cutting the pole so as to keep it intact, as eluded to, I have a hammock which I plan to use in future. The poles will make an ideal hanging spot! Albeit not in their current position, mores the pity.

Thanks one and all, this has cheered me up 😉
