Evening all.... Anyone else have issues with chrome on Android (mobile) browsing this forum.

Often it just hangs... Need to close window and reopen. Almost every redirect needs a reload.

It's virtually broken and very annoying to navigate.

Could not find the big forum issues thread so trying here!

Nope. I mostly view it on Chrome on Android and never experience any of these problems.

Thread'll likely get locked, but yes, I would say that I find that chrome android often stalls loading pages - especially at the break of the thread for the first advert. Gets to that advert then stops.

I dont mind adverts on web pages in general terms, but they're getting to the point that they consume so much resource to display that it is affecting usability of sites. Across the web they are simply too intrusive.

There's no way I'd visit this forum using chrome - many others, yes, but not this one.

I use another browser that deals better with this site.

*Cough

It's the advert brakes half way down the page that slow it down.

The pesky malware attempts when i click on a randomn thread title are more annoying

I've been getting this ever since the relaunch. always caused by the ads waiting to load. Worse in a dense area with loads of other handsets slowing the data signal down, awful when on 3G. The latest Chrome update made it slightly better but only a little bit, other sites seem fine though. Always caused by Komoona.

I get it all that as well, i think of it as a bonus feature really. Not only am i unsure what the thread is actually about because the new format limits the amount of title you get to see but it's also 50/50 whether it'll load or not.

Basically the redesign has added a load of mystery, chance and feelings of hope, disappointment and relief which weren't there previously when it was the same dull, tired format used by other forums - read thread title, click if you were interested, read thread. FFS where's the excitement in that approach!?

This new approach is loads better, they should try and charge for it.

Hmmmmm I use a lot of different forums and this hands down wins for the most frustrating! Which is a shame as it's one of my favourites. Guess I should pay for a P but to be honest I am not that interested in the content of late (much prefer the sort of stuff stw focused on around 3 years ago tbh).

I digress, so typing this on Opera browser (Galaxy s6) and its much better. Still a little slow but no hanging and reloading.

So seems like chrome has a real issue with the ads.

Firefox & dolphin also seem to work better than chrome.

Works fine here on a Galaxy S6 and a Hudl2 both using Chrome. I do request the desktop site on both though.

Ads take a lot of processing power these days. You don't notice it so much on desktops, but it can kill mobiles. Some of the local news sites are terrible. 90% ad and 10% content, but the content loads after all the ads so by that time it's crashed the browser or you've given up.

Oh and some browsers will try to download everything before rendering, though Chrome doesn't or didn't used to. I'm seeing a number of sites refresh themselves now after half the page has loaded though and loads a bit more, then refresh, and a bit more, and that's on various browsers.

Anyway, answer here of course is... P 😛

One thing I found made a big difference on Chrome (to the browsing experience generally, not just STW) was disabling Flash. Settings / Advanced / Content.

I'm sure I remember a long post a few months ago I think from Mark, saying so.

Not very supportive though if you have that block ads ticked, not to mention also against T&Cs 😉

If someone can let me know when the porn ads and pop ups have stopped I'll turn off ad blocker again. Until then it's ad blocker only for this site.

May consider subscribing in future, once I've seen how usable the new forum format is and have got mortgage sorted. Adding extra commitments I have to explain to the banks is not top of the list right now.

Last night porn pop ups. This morning on the train in malware. No way I'm using this site at work without an ad blocker!

So I found his post - he did say "most", but for me it's the others that make the page slow...

Mark - Resident Grumpy

The majority of the ads we serve are served asynchronously, which is technobabble for not getting i the way of the rest of the page loading. The page doesn't stop and wait for the ad to appear - if an ad glitches up the rest of the page should still load. It should mean that ad networks work harder to make sure they aren't running technically bad ads since the user will have read the page content and moved on before their dead ad finishes loading.

That's the theory. Not all our ad positions are async but most are.

Just tried without an ad blocker this morning, standard chrome on Android.
Clicked on a topic, ended up redirected to an app in the play store.

Back to blocking all ads on this site.
