received CPR on a flight to LA from London; doesn't say how long for. But agree, doesn't sound good.

As Adam Hills on the Last Leg just said '2016 - just don't ****ing dare'

Oh FFS... 2016 you utter **** you.

I hope she's okay, but it doesn't sound good.

There was a doctor and nurse on board, but she went into full cardiac arrest, the chances of surviving that is slim even without being on a plane at the time.

A long cardiac arrest isn't good. Oxygen starvation to the brain being an issue. If her heart was restarted after so long it'll take a while to work out the ramifications.

FFS. 2016 has been a 5 star fur lined ocean going nuclear powered 4 funnelled gold plated glow in the dark bag of shit. We don't need this to cap it off.

Finger crossed.

Not a bad place to have a heart attack. Personnel trained in first aid and they probably have a defibrillator on board. Better than dropping down in the street or in bed.

Articles seem to keep using heart attack and cardiac arrest interchangeably?

They do, but they mean different things. She's had a cardiac arrest; if memory serves the commonest cause of these out of hospital is indeed a heart attack (though there are other potential causes especially in the context of long-haul flight e.g. PE) but the overwhelming majority of people who have heart attacks don't arrest.

Stable in the context of critical care doesn't mean much except they're not getting worse though. After 30 min down could well mean not on any inotropes/vasopressor and not waking with the sedation off.

I'm aware of that - my comment was the fact that the latest update as I typed was 2hrs old at that point.
There was nothing from any other site showing any different.

An absolute hero to me.
Apart from adoring her in Star Wars it was the way she was so outspoken about Mental Health and took on the role of the unofficial poster child of the manic depressive!
Took a lot of flak when she first opened up about it in the 90's but was one of the first major celebrities to do so and was a wonderful advocate until the end.
She will be missed..

Staggered to hear of yet another idol's passing in what can only be described as the darkest of years... I've been indifferent regarding many of the sad passings this year, but taking both Prince and Carrie in the same year has not been kind!

2016 looks to be finishing just as it started, the remorseless outlier that ****ed with many of our childhood fantasies!

I'm just glad that I'll always be a little short to be a stormtrooper...

Very sad news as she was definitely a liver of life. Is it wrong to be jealous of Jabba the Hutt, what with THAT costume and all?

@ Klunk.

There's some real venom in there, masked slightly by the humour.

I watched A New Hope again today and I'd forgotten her incredible smile, which you can see signs of in that clip. It's a shame she didn't smile more in life.

Chances of surviving a cardiac arrest outside of hospital is around 1%.....not good even with good CPR from a Dr and Nurse on the flight.

Depends on how much of her heart died during the cardiac arrest as to how bad her heart failure was afterwards, someone can look on the up and then suddenly crash.

RIP

IIRC it's better than that - non-shockable arrests in hospital have a 4% survival to discharge and I'm sure out of hospital, especially when witnessed, is higher than that.

Edit - Google suggests the AMA stats give 5.2% as worst case, and 31.7% for witnessed, shockable arrests

RIP to Debbie Reynolds, it must be desperately sad to see your child die.

One thing one of my Uncles said at my Gran's funeral last week was that she had lived to be 96 without having to bury any of her children.
