I have HTC Desire X's and Samsung X-covers at work for our team. Not my choice, inherited. 😐

They all have issues of running out of memory, and as we use them for images, navigation on google maps, work emails and work social media, this is becoming a real problem.

Is this just the fact that they are 'old tools' and budget phones?

My sons MotoG has none of the issues - so what do I need to look for (apart from 7 new MotoG's...) in a budget phone...We are not fixed to Android, indeed our southern team all have iPhone 5c's..

Use dropbox for the images?

I think it is more that the bloatware clogs up any app space. We have masses of image storage (sd cards), but we struggle to access the images and struggle to do much with them (e.g. post on social media, attach to emial) - but this is a 1GB internal storage limit issue, combined with HTC and Samsung bloat ware we do not use or want - but cannot get rid of..

I have an HTC One Mini 2 for work (awful phone name / good phone)

Works absolutely fine for work stuff. Good battery life, you can read things on it and it makes calls.
The Iphone 5c isn't a bad phone and despite being an android person it wouldn't bother me to have one for work, especially as again the battery is pretty good

Be warned Mini 2's have very weak screens, I broke mine within a few weeks (it was in my front trouser pocket and I felt it go when I sat down)and I have never broken a screen ever. They do free replacement screens in the US for them, so it can't be that uncommon.

I'm using a Wiki Wax at the moment and its OK, sometimes it can be a bit slow so I should root it really.

I don't think app storage is the same as total storage.

Generally the phones have a limit of memory they can utilise for apps.

My Xperia has 2Gb it calls Device Memory and something like 12Gb it calls internal storage.

I've got tons of internal storage left available (>7Gb) but less than 400Mb of Device Memory free.
Facebook is coming in at 126Mb, Chrome at almost 100Mb and there's plenty of others around about that size. Apps are constantly getting bigger and the older phones can't keep up.

My old HTC Desire would probably be full now with just Facebook & Google Chrome on.

Make sure that as many apps as possible are 'move to SD card' in the app settings to free up space on the device memory.

^ that is the issue stumpy - we have only 1gb device memory - and yet device+SD memory is 14gb, barely used!

On the HTC I can move apps onto SD. On the Samsung I cannot.

Time to sort new phones I think.

probably just running shed loads of un needed apps.
I'm still on a cheapy Xperia Tipo as I hate big phones and the battery lasts 4x as long as any of my mates fancy phones. it only has 521mb internal ram and copes fine with everything you use yours for. it has a 32G SD card almost full of music/pics. if free memory becomes lower than 100mb it noticeably slows up.

Move as many apps as you can onto your SD and delete all the guff you don't really use from the internal memory.

I find the Facebook app to be the worst offender for stealing internal memory. Delete all the data from it once in a while.

I use App manager III to move stuff to SD (think it used to be called APP2SD)

Sort of, yes.

Some of the older phones had issues exactly as the OP describes - the original Desire was notorious for it, for example. New devices will almost certainly fix the problem.

One thing worth checking is your thumbnail cache. If you have a high turnover of photos you might find that all the old thumbnails are still there even though the photos themselves are long gone. I've seen phones with over half of the internal storage lost to this.

nope - they wont even cope with 'core' simple apps such as facebook, twitter and maps now....

I am not faffing my time on rooting and making things unstable - I think new phone time...

No experience of it, but might help.

thanks for the facebook lite tip - might try that later. If only because the new facebook apps are crap!

I just use the browser, but maybe that's even slower.

Should have said earlier - The Register review was interesting stuff for anyone considering a Moto G.

My tuppence is wait a little longer for a version with a new SoC. The new Moto E has a new SoC based on newer ARM Arch, and it's much faster than the old one. There MUST be a new chip for a new G very shortly.

I keep looking at the Moto G 4G as an upgrade from my relatively geriatric Galaxy Nexus, but it has the same amount of RAM and half the onboard storage so it just doesn't seem to make sense.

Via a review of the Facebook Lite app, I found a recommendation to use the Facebook mobile site in a browser. Bookmark it and stick the bookmark on your homescreen.

I might give it a go, as it would replace FB Messenger as well, which kills my phone whenever I install it.
