Because Farage has basically been hiding from questions for a while now... but this morning he went into ALL the studios to start his demands for a general election due to the PM standing down (as everyone predicted), and while they had him they asked him the obvious questions he'd been avoiding... as did ITV, LBC... everywhere he went... how could they not?
So genuinely, the difference is that he came to them, presented himself on a plate, so they couldn't help but ask him the questions they should've been asking him for the last two months??
But they can send Chris Mason to wet himself at Downing Street, get a helicopter following a train from Manchester to London for a new MP. Honestly, it's pathetic.
I've been thinking for a while the news these days is driven primarily by "how much trouble might this get us in?". You notice how many mainstream news stories aren't presented now as "thing happened", but "someone said something about a thing that happened". That way the dodge is there: not "Nigel Farage accepted £5m", but "someone else has said Nigel Farage has questions to answer about the £5m he accepted". So if it turns out he didn't accept the money (or wants to sue), the BBC, Guardian et al can hide behind the fact that "oh, but we weren't asserting that to be true, we were just reporting that someone else had a comment about it".

Correct, they couldn't ask questions of the man when he was missing in action and avoiding questions. As soon as he's popped up, they've gone in with the questions everyone wants asking (despite his protestations that "no one cares" about his dodgy income, he knows full well people do, even people who say they'll vote for him, that's why he's been in hiding and hoping people will forget about it as more news events happen).

I was really pissed the day before when the Beeb reported that Badenoch and Farage were calling for a general election, but guess whose statement got played in the report? It wasn't the leader of HMs opposition.

thing is though - he's reeled off a selection of what he thinks are probable sounding reasons why he's been given the money and what its being used for to what he considers his friendly press already - basically trying different answers to the question to see what people are happy to swallow. So 'none of your business' and the notion that its a question he doesn't need to answer doesn't really wash when he's already given a bunch of answer to the same question.
It sort of suggests either all of the answers he's given are lies and theres a true reply that he doesn't want to give, or if any of them are true he's hoping he can somehow un-answer the question, as non his answers to date have yielded any sympathy from his supporters.
There was an interesting bit on the Newsagents with More In Common at the time of the local elections where in focus groups, although Reform had done really well at the polls, people were saying it was probably be the last time they voted for Farage as he's becoming too much of an establishment figure for what they see as their protest vote for an outsider

Maybe Starmer should make Farage a Lord in his end-of-role awards list. It would make it really hard for him to be a man of the people and not the establishment if he was a Lord!
