I've just received a flyer from the Royal Mail explaining the amazing new changes for second-class postage.
- Mail will no longer be delivered every day. It will be delivered every other day instead.
- Obviously, we won't deliver on Saturdays anymore.
- Now we'll hope to get the letters to you within three working days.
- And best of all, all these reductions in services won't cost you a penny extra.
So half the delivery frequency during the week and nothing at weekends but still the same price.
I wonder what every other day means for a 5 day working week?
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday on the first week then Tuesday and Thursday on the send week?
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday every week?
- Tuesday and Thursday every week?
Has to be monday wednesday friday or they can't keep their three day delivery promise over the weekend.
I don't quite understand why don't just have 'post' these days.
Where I live on the edge of a city, not the middle of nowhere people have had to resort to going to the sorting office if they want their letters whatever class. It's a sorting office I once worked decades at ago and I've two friends who work there and one whose very very happy to have retired last month. They'll all tell you the same thing, they are clearly and unequivocally told that packets go before everything. Nothing of course in writing but have no doubt for the Royal Mail letters are just a problem dealt with by pretending they can't see them.
If youre anything like me/us, we get so little physical post that we dont even notice what days it does or doesn't arrive. STW mag came this morning, I think thats the first thing through the letterbox for about 4 days, and the last time was a bunch of junk mail flyers for a couple of local restaurants , a gutter cleaning business and a jobbing gardener.
My partner is trying to sort out her ex's estate, we currently estimate that approximately 50% of the letters needed just get sent to the void by the royal mail!
I don't much mind the mail being slow so long as it gets there. The faith the government has in the system irritates. You've got a lot of difficult/expensive/imposible to replace documents and we want you to send us them by mail with no recorded delivery.
Our old postman Jim (he's still a postman, just not down our road), rang our doorbell on Saturday with an armful of post, packages, etc, and very apologetically told me that he had brought all he could but there is still a lot to be delivered to us in the sorting office. I told him how grateful I was for him to deliver it - we had been waiting several weeks some time for some of it and it has arrived just in time.Â

I've suspected for years now that that's exactly what we have. The only difference between First and Second class post is the cost and that has been the case for a long time.

Mate of mine recently packed in being a postie. He said that they were basically told that all other post comes before second class and to only deliver that if they had time, which they rarely did as they had to be back at the depot at a certain time and were not allowed to start early even on the known busy days. New starters get paid so little there's no incentive to stay.
I've suspected for years now that that's exactly what we have. The only difference between First and Second class post is the cost and that has been the case for a long time.

When it had to be sorted by hand it made sense that you would have a pile of priority stuff to do before the train left, and a lower priority pile to get sorted before the next day.
Now it all wizzes through a machine that they bought 20years ago when mail was still a thing and is probably working at a fraction of it's capacity.

The decisions made by RM since I left are mostly bats hit crazy.
I've not spoken to anyone still at the Shirley depot recently, to know how bad things really are there, affecting WCA's deliveries.

See my post, this isn't the case, you have much more chance of actually getting your letters if sent first class.
