No-one knows where this came from but Reading fans, on an away coach trip one time, and Madonna's Erotica came onto the radio. A few celebrity names and verses were trialled in place of the real words until someone hit on
Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, Rub your beard all over my body
which then became a staple chant for several years.
To his credit, Bill, a lifelong Man Utd fan even turned up to a match to have the song sung to him, and even became a second clubber for the mighty R's as a result.

He always came across as a well humoured and generally around nice chap.

We were once out for a Christmas Day morning walk by Watership Down (yes, it's a real place), and passed Bill Oddie out by himself. It's quite close to Andrew Lloyd-Webber's place so we speculated he was there for Christmas and had escaped for the morning to avoid the singing.
He presented a friend of mine with his Gold DofE award way back in the early 90s.

He will always be remembered in my case as the bird spotter who presented the first Spring watch programmes. I didn't hear any other gossip. Also the 'Goodies' as a child was amusing.
Ive just had an email from Haith's birdfood suppliers in Lincs, where he'd had some sort of a longterm 'consultant' or adviser role, then became a friend of the various directors and managers there. It was really quite touching.

One evening in the late 1980s on his kid’s tv show he read out a joke my sister sent in. It wasn’t a great joke but it was about birds and he seemed to genuinely enjoy it. All the rest of the evening we had phone calls from people who’d heard it.
He always seemed like a decent man.

Another decent guy that I'm sad to see has passed on.
Loved the madness of The Goodies as a kid and he was great on Spring Watch in the early seasons. Really sad to read that losing his place on the show put him into a really dark place.
